“I absolutely knew that I could be a physician,” says Patrice Harris. “But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be president of the American Medical Association(AMA).” Harris is the first African American woman ever to be elected president of the AMA.
Harris was growing up in a small town, and becoming a doctor felt like a dream for her. “Even though I knew I wanted to be a physician,” she said, “I had no idea how to get there.” Harris worked extremely hard to achieve her dream. She said, “In life, none of us get through without any setback. What’s important is to learn from these challenges.” Harris completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at West Virginia University. When Harris was in her third year of medical school, she decided to specialize in psychiatry(精神病学), the study and treatment of mental illnesses. “Some of my patients had what I thought were very interesting disorders,” she said. “And there was something new every day.”
In 2007, Harris won the Psychiatrist of the Year Award and widely recognized as a top doctor. But it is not awards, she said, but rather treating and caring for her patients that has motivated her throughout her career. “That interaction with my patients is very fulfilling, because every opportunity that I have to help a patient in need is so meaningful, and it shows me why I originally wanted to go into the profession of medicine,” Harris said.
As president, Harris hopes to make sure that people across the country have access to the resources they need to ensure good health and that everyone is on a path. she said, “everyone should have the same opportunities to live a healthy life.”

Long the symbolic face of endangered species in China, the giant panda has made significant progress in recent years. In the 1980s, only about 1,216 pandas were left in the wild, but the most recent calculation counted more than 1,800.
The increased numbers could be due to improved survey methods or true growth from better protection measures. In either case, pandas still face plenty of threats, of which habitat loss is the main one to survival. Human growth in their areas, combined with climate change has led to the loss of livable land. In addition, pandas have been facing dangers from illegal hunting.
Because pandas are now distributed across China in groups, with each group separated from the others due to habitat destruction, the Chinese government is creating a huge national park in southwestern China to protect them. Giant Panda National Park will cover 10,476 square miles (27,132 square kilometers), which is nearly three times the area of Yellowstone National Park. The new park will make an effort to reunite populations that have become separated from one another.
This project “takes the long view,” Bob Tansey, China policy adviser for The Nature Conservancy, tells National Geographic. “Generally, pandas are doing well. But what will they need in the future? Connectivity.”
The park’s connectivity should give isolated(独居的)pandas a better chance to breed. Giant pandas have a very low reproductive rate, with females generally usually giving birth every two years, the WWF reports. The new park eventually should give them room to find mates, thus resulting in more young pandas. After all, habitat will remain patchy until degraded lands are restored and stronger land-use restrictions come into effect that make wildlife corridors(廊道) possible.
The park also aims to promote the local economy, the Associated Press reports. An official involved in the park’s planning tells the state-run China Daily this project would help ease poverty among the 170,000 people living within the park’s proposed territory. The government is offering financial support to encourage people living in the area to relocate, according to National Geographic. Some areas of the park also eventually will allow tourism.
【1】What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The main challenges pandas still face.
B.The dangers humans bring to the pandas.
C.The reason for the loss of pandas’ habitats.
D.The protection measures taken to pandas.
【2】What can we learn about Giant Panda National Park?
A.It has been used for many years. B.It has reunited different pandas.
C.It is set up by the local government. D.It is larger than Yellowstone National Park.
【3】What does Bob Tansey expect of the project ?
A.It’ll house more isolated pandas.
B.It’ll favor female pandas with babies.
C.It’ll benefit the process of reproducing.
D.It’ll serve as a comfortable habitat for pandas.
【4】Why will tourism get permission in this panda park?
A.Tourism helps gain high profits.
B.Tourism accelerates the speed of allocation.
C.Tourism results in economic boom absolutely.
D.Tourism contributes to lessening the economic pressure.

If you grew up watching the Jetsons, the idea of having a robot helper that cleans and cooks for your family has always been a fantasy. People want to have a robot do the housework and the good news is that great minds are working on it.
Elon Musk announced back in June that his OpenAI robotic institute was working on developing software that would enable off-the-shelf robots to do household chores and various other engineers are working on robots that could accomplish cleaning and organizing tasks. The bad news is that experts say not to expect these robots in our homes any time soon.
“Cleaning is different from other tasks we’ve thought about in robotics, which typically involved manipulating objects, or moving them place to place.” said Maya Cakmak, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington, to MIT Technology Review.
Cakmak said that to accomplish household chores, robots have to know the fight tool for each specific task, the right angle to hold each tool, how to move it, how much pressure to use, how fast to move and more. Think about the variety of tools and techniques you use just to clean your kitchen. It’s much more complicated than just lifting objects and moving them.
Cakmak is teaching robots in her lab through demonstrating cleaning techniques for the robot’s vision system. The robot then imitates the cleaning motion .The goal is to get the robot to learn the correct cleaning motion and for it to be able to determine if the surface is clean after the action.
Even when that is accomplished, there’s a long way to go. In order for a robot to clean an entire house, it would have to be able to fully understand its environment and make decisions based on the state of each room—something that is beyond the current abilities of artificial intelligence. Cakmak says that she believes houses will also have to be redesigned with machines in mind so that robots can better identify their position within a home and move around in it.
【1】How can we describe about household chores for robots?
A.Complex and demanding. B.Simple and easy to handle.
C.Unusual but easy to manage. D.Dangerous and challenging.
【2】How does Cakmak instruct robots to do cleaning work?
A.By setting an example to them. B.By imitating the cleaning motion.
C.By analyzing their vision system. D.By teaching some specific techniques.
【3】What can we infer about the future of cleaning robots?
A.They’ll reach more consumers. B.They’ll help solve housework entirely.
C.They’ll still face many challenges ahead. D.They’ll be equipped with artificial intelligence.
【4】Which is a suitable title for the text?
A.Varied Styles of Cleaning Robots B.Benefits from Possessing Robots
C.Cleaning Robots: A Future New Trend D.Cleaning Robots: A Long Way to Go
