There are few things that will come close to the excitements of white-water rafting(激流皮划艇运动); after all, this sport can take a turn for the worse if safety measures are ignored. But if it’s done in place, this can be an adventure like no other.

The White Nile, Uganda
The White Nile flows from the rather calm Lake Victoria, but soon bursts into a major force as it runs through Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Sudan. Rafting on the river, though, is best enjoyed when you’re in Uganda, with rapids touching Class V. And now to the best part --- rafting on the White Nile is permitted all year round except in spring, with nine Class V rapids.
The Colorado River, Arizona
When you’re surrounded by beautiful nature, it's hard to concentrate on the task at hand. But if your attention is attracted by nature, you will be thrown into the water. This stretch of the Colorado River has what is probably the largest Class V rapid in the United States, which attracts rafting enthusiasts worldwide. In late spring, snow melts from the Rocky Mountains bringing in some Class V rapids.
The Zambezi River, Zimbabwe
Africa’s got some big thrills in the Zambezi River. It’s full of big Class V rapids. The Batoka Gorge is where the river turns over 23 rapids, going on for a 15-mile stretch below the Victoria Falls. This is best described as the continent’s most thrilling rafting experience all year round except in spring.
The Tuolumne River, California
The Tuolumne River stretches for a distance of 27 miles, where you can experience some amazing Class V rapids. The river will test your rafting skills as you raft along the course. The best time to be here is in early spring. You can also enjoy the wilderness in Yosemite, a valley in California, America.
【1】Which of the following can best describe white-water rafting?
A.Competitive but easy. B.Popular but dangerous.
C.Frightening but worthy. D.Exciting but adventurous.
【2】Which river offers the most thrills in late spring?
A.The Colorado River. B.The White Nile.
C.The Tuolumne River. D.The Zambezi River.
【3】What do the Colorado River and the Tuolumne River have in common?
A.They cover the same distance. B.They are located in America.
C.Only experienced rafters are allowed. D.They are from the Rocky Mountains.

Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” I’ve always enjoyed learning new languages. So far I’ve learned 11 languages.
German is the first language I started learning completely on my own. I don’t remember clearly why I chose this language to learn, but I remember I had no idea how to learn it. I spent several months reading an old grammar book found in my grandmother’s bookcase. But I quickly lost heart.
Then I saw a commercial(广告) on TV about a language series in 4 languages and decided to give it a go. While using it, I came up with my method: a special technique to absorb(掌握) the basic patterns of any language in a light, natural and fun way. I quickly realized that it was helpful to me.
After using the technique for a year and a half, I met a group of Germans while on vacation. I would always remember their faces as they asked in surprise, “Wie kannst du so gut Deutsch?” This reaction and the resulting, special connection were enough to fuel(加强) my passion(热情) to improve my German. From that moment on I started reading a lot. The language has become an important part of my life.
Lesson learned: If you find a method that you like and works, you can start learning any language by yourself. There is no best method of learning a language. Find something that is helpful to you. And above all experiment!
【1】What Nelson Mandela said shows the importance of ______.
A.going to others’ hearts B.learning foreign languages
C.understanding foreigners D.learning our mother tongue well
【2】What did the author most probably think of the old grammar book?
A.Simple. B.Helpful.
C.Boring. D.Wonderful.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The commercial on TV.
B.The language series in 4 languages.
C.The way the author got from the language series.
D.Learning all lessons in a light, natural and fun way.
【4】What did the Germans most probably ask the author in Paragraph 4?
A.How can you speak German so well?
B.Where did you learn German?
C.Could you be a guide for us?
D.Can you tell us your way of learning German?

One day this January, my classroom was full of nervous atmosphere as 15 teenagers prepared to lock their smart-phones in a cabinet(柜子) and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks. The ceremony kicked off a class I taught called Logging Off. During the rest of the school year, I taught high school chemistry, but this mini-course gave my students and me an opportunity to examine the role of technology in our lives.
When the time came to power down, many students were eager to be free of their phones, while others held onto their phones like a favorite stuffed animal. Their emotions seemed to vary from worry(“How will I talk with my friends?”) to expectation (“I can t wait to read more books.”).
Over the next few days, the students identified a surprising source of anxiety. Without their phones, they weren’t sure what to do when there was nothing to do. That’s when it hit me: I long for the kind of time alone with my thoughts that my students feared. I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong or imagine myself living abroad. I stare at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life.
As we closed in on the final days of the course, I noticed a change in the kids’ attitude. Their anxiety faded. They went for walks, composed music, and played board games with younger sisters and brothers. They experienced life in the moment.
On the last day, when I returned their phones, I thought the kids would power up immediately and go straight to social media. Instead, most of them left the classroom with screens still dark, saying they wanted to see how long they could wait.
I know the pull of the digital world is strong, but I’m hoping the brief break from continuous connectivity has shown my students that they have a choice in what to do in their downtime, while they’re waiting in line for coffee or walking home. I hope they catch the valuable chance to daydream.
【1】What did the author’s 15 students decide to do?
A.Work hard at chemistry.
B.Dis-connect themselves from each other.
C.Put the phones aside for 14 days.
D.Live without the Internet for a school year.
【2】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Students’ thoughts about technology.
B.Students’ expectations of the mini-course.
C.Students’ emotions at the end of the mini-course.
D.Students’ different reactions at the beginning stage.
【3】What does the author like doing in her moments alone?
A.Imagining her future work. B.Making up stories.
C.Preparing for traveling abroad. D.Thinking of a funny conversation.
【4】What did most students do when they got their phones back?
A.They went straight back to social media.
B.They made changes to their phone screens.
C.They kept their phones turned off.
D.They had their phones re-charged immediately.

Against a background of white snow, a cardinal(美洲红雀) rests on a tree branch. It’s a beautiful sight. But have you wondered how birds stay warm when it’s very cold outside? Besides cardinals, other birds that don’t migrate(迁徙) during winter include chickadees(山雀), owls, some woodpeckers and robins, which use different ways to deal with cold weather.
In autumn, some birds grow extra feathers to prepare for the colder months. When temperatures drop, some birds keep warm by trembling just like us jumping up and down when we feel cold outside. Some species like chickadees and bluebirds often crowd together to share heat. Some species swell(鼓起) their feathers out. By trapping air in their feathers, they create a layer of warmth around themselves. Some species are able to lower their body temperature by as much as 20 degrees. By bringing the body temperature closer to the air temperature and keeping inactive, those birds preserve heat and energy, especially at night. But it’s dangerous: they’re more uncovered by predators(捕食者).
Even with these abilities, birds can still use our help. By providing extra shelter in your backyard, you can protect birds from cold temperatures and predators. Roost boxes are a special type of birdhouse that you can build. Birds enter these thick-walled boxes through a hole at the bottom and can rest on perches inside.
To protect birds from high-speed window collisions(碰撞), place feeders within 5 to 10 feet of your home. You can also consider fixing a heated bird bath. Birds need fresh water — for drinking and to keep their feathers in good shape. According to research, preventing a bird from baths will lead to more untidy feathers and therefore poorer flight performance. They will become clumsier(笨拙的) when flying and easier to catch. So baths might play a role in survival too.
【1】How do chickadees always keep warm in cold winter?
A.By jumping up and down. B.By staying close to each other.
C.By trapping air in feathers. D.By lowering their body temperature.
【2】What may happen to a bird if it is inactive in winter?
A.It may be attacked. B.It wastes much energy.
C.It will be frozen to death. D.It can’t hunt for enough food.
【3】Why is it important for birds to keep their feathers clean?
A.Their health can be improved. B.Cold can be kept out effectively.
C.Clean feathers can help birds fly well. D.Window collisions can be avoided.
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.How can we raise birds well?
B.How can birds survive the cold winter?
C.What should we do to protect birds?
D.What knowledge should we have about birds?

Student life is one of the greatest moments in our lives that prepare us for the future. However, a lot of people take it for granted. A lot of people see it as ways to an end, which means that they are just there to get a diploma(文凭) for them to get a good job. 【1】 However, learning isn’t limited to the classroom and a diploma doesn’t necessarily mean a successful life or career.
As students, we are admitted into a university to learn what we need to survive on our own. We are expected to listen, understand and ask questions to make sure that we are actually learning something. This is the general idea of what a student should be doing. 【2】 In school, we learn to make friends, deal with stressful situations and manage our time wisely. These are the skills we need to survive in the real world. 【3】 We experience successes, which give us confidence, and failures, which make us want to push harder in order to succeed.
The experiences we have in school, whether in or out of the classroom, contribute to the total outcome of what we’ll be in the future. 【4】 Instead, we should take each experience as an element(要素) to our success in the future.
【5】 While we can never really know what life will be like after school, student life gives us a glance of what we can expect.
A.There is nothing wrong with this way of thinking.
B.As students, we are also faced with different challenges.
C.Everything we learn in school prepares us for the rest of our lives.
D.Many successful people took an active part in after-school activities.
E.Students shouldn’t limit themselves to the four walls of the classroom.

It was cold and rainy in yesterday. Standing at a bus stop on Jiner Road, I notice that an old man didn’t have a hat and an umbrella. Without delay, I went up and gave her the umbrella I carried with me. As the result, I was caught in the heavy rain. Unfortunately, I was entirely wet when I got to school. To my great happy, my head-teacher and classmates thought high of me the moment they knew about my kind act. It was not until then when I realized giving was joyful than I had thought.
