You may have already heard about the trimester system (三学期制) in Western universities. For example, in the UK, an academic year is usually divided into three terms, each made up of 10 weeks — the autumn term (October to December), the spring term (January to March) and the summer term (April to June). This system is believed to bring more flexibility (灵活性) when scheduling classes, internships and personal projects.
Now China is introducing the system to its own students. In fact, nearly half of the country’s Project 985 universities have already added the third term into their academic timetables. But our trimester system is a little bit different from that in the West.
Take China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) as an example, which has started to use the new schedule. Its academic year will now divided into the autumn term (September to January), the spring term (February to July) and the summer term (July).
Lu Chunlong, director of the dean’s office at CUPL, told The Beijing News that during summer terms students would be able to take classes in other subjects. They are also encouraged to join various courses in the form of social practice and internships. It’s hoped that this new method will allow students to experience a broader and more diverse academic environment and help them to be more ready for their future career.
However, some students worry that summer term courses are too short, pointing out that they would have to attend classes every day without having time to digest what they’ve learned.
This is why Lu suggests that students should not overdo it during summer. "One course is the best, two tops," she advises.
Xiong Bingqi, vice-president of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said in an interview with The Beijing News," What’s important is not how the academic year is divided, but how the studying content is distributed (分配) among each term. "
【1】What can we learn from the passage?
A.The trimester system has found its way into nearly half of the Chinese universities.
B.Some students at CUPL worry about the demanding schedule of the spring term.
C.A Chinese academic year now is made up of a spring, a summer and an autumn term.
D.In the UK the trimester system is in use because it can bring flexibility to the timetables.
【2】What does the underlined word "diverse" probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Including many different types.
B.Needing complete attention.
C.Requiring creativity.
D.Limited to a small area of interest.
【3】Which of the following serves best as the title?
A.The trimester system in the UK
B.The trimester system at CUPL
C.Time to "tri" something new
D.Trimesters vs Semesters

It is like a scene from a horror film:a spider web is several meters wide, which is home to thousands of spiders. And that was what Jason G.Goldman,an animal behavior researcher, found along a muddy path in the Peruvian Amazon jungle—the web arched from tree to tree,a structure containing too many spiders to count. They appeared to function as a society, just like ants or bees.
Anelosimus eximius, the species Goldman met in the rainforest,is not the only kind of social spiders in the world, but it does construct the biggest webs. Some can reach more than 7.6m long and 1.5m wide.A web of that size could contain as many as 50,000 individual spiders.
Anelosimus eximius was first discovered more than a century ago by a French scientist named Eugene Simon.More social spiders have been discovered since. One was found as recently as 2006.
An Anelosimus eximius colony(群体) contains adult males and females as well as youngsters, but the majority of spiders on the web are females. Males account for only between 5% and 22% of any colony’s population.Social spiders work together to build, maintain and clean their webs. They work together to catch prey(猎物),and dine together when they trap a large feast. The females work together to care for the young in the colony. They feed their youngsters by vomiting(吐出) up food for them, just like mother birds.
Why did these spiders become social?Researchers have discovered three ecological(生态的) elements that often lead to cooperative(合作的) living among spiders.
Social spiders tend to feed on bigger prey, for one thing.Spiders living in places where it is difficult to hunt large or more profitable prey alone may eventually figure out that it is in their interest to work together.
【1】What can we know about Anelosimus eximius from the text?
A. Its latest branch was found in 2006.
B. It was discovered by Jason G.Goldman.
C. It has been in existence for less than a century.
D. It builds bigger webs than other kinds of spiders.
【2】Which of the following correctly shows the parts of an Anelosimus eximius colony?
A. B.
C. D.
【3】What’s the main feature of social spiders?
A. They live on big prey.
B. They care for the young.
C. They live and work together.
D. They mainly exist in the rainforest.
【4】The following paragraph would discuss .
A. new threats to spiders’ colonies
B. new research on spiders’ colonies
C. more reasons for spiders’ cooperative living
D. more species of social spiders in the world

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.
But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always put his opinions and codes of behavior on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on th e streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived , I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous(蛮横的)words: “I can’t throw you away, let alone these old papers?”
All the lights were off except father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist(存在) at all. Love—it second to none.

B.The sight of the empty street.

A.perhaps the father is getting older and older.
B.perhaps the son has already grown up.

Ford is showing its first all-electric sports utility vehicle, or SUV—the Mustang Mach E, marking a major change in the U. S. car industry. Auto industry reporters got their first look at the new electric vehicle Sunday. The new Mustang can travel from 370 to 480 kilometers before needing an electrical charge(充电). Experts say the Mustang Mach E marks the start of an increase in electric vehicles offered by top U. S. carmakers.
There are 18 electric vehicle models for sale in the U. S. The research group IHS Mark it expects that number to grow to 80 by 2022. New vehicles will include pickup trucks and SUVs that are popular with American buyers.
Last year, electric vehicles made up only 1.5 percent of new vehicle sales worldwide. Auto Industry research company LMC Automotive predicts(预言) that will rise to 2.2 percent this year. In the U. S., electric vehicles were only 1.2 percent of sales in 2019. It is expected to be the same in 2020.
Automakers, however, see room for growth. They note that electric vehicles are getting 250 miles or more on a single charge. That means a buyer no longer needs to worry about running out of power during a day’s usual drive. Because of the added models and increased power, LMC predicts that they will make up 17 percent of worldwide sales and 7 percent of U. S. sales in 2030.
The first-generation of electric vehicles were simply existing models that were changed to electricity to meet government fuel economy rules. They did not sell well largely because they could not travel more than 100 miles between charges. But now, many can go farther than the average one-day driving distance. The five-passenger Mach E looks like a traditional Mustang. Engineers say the least costly model will be able to travel about 370 kilometers on one charge. The most costly model will be able to travel 483 kilometers.

【2】What do we know about the growth of electric vehicles in America in 2030 according to LMC?
A.It’s the fastest in the world. B.It is much below the world average.
C.It’s the same as the world average. D.It hasn’t changed very much.
【3】How did the author develop the last paragraph?
A.By giving examples. B.By introducing new ideas.
C.By making comparisons. D.By following time order.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Ford Starts New Electric Vehicles B.Electric Vehicles Are Better for Environment
C.Old Electric Vehicles Will Be Knocked Out D.Electric Vehicles Will Take Over the Market

For some people, the warmest memories from childhood come from being read a great story. 【1】 It develops children’s language skills and increases their ability to succeed in school and, later, work.
Experts say parents should read books that are not too long and on the right age level so that children will not lose interest. They say parents should also point to and talk about pictures in books for infants (幼儿). 【2】
Elizabeth Lyttleton has three daughters. They are at age ten, eight and two. 【3】 She says, "I watch my two-year-old, who is now getting a big language explosion.
