Global warming always reminds us of rising sea levels and extreme weather, but it may actually bring other less obvious, long-term changes. How might they influence our lives in the future? Let’s take a look.
Making food less nutritious
The more serious global warming is, the more greenhouse gases the atmosphere contains. According to Science Advances, foods are found to contain low levels of key nutrition when they’re exposed to high levels of greenhouse gases. “If we do nothing, there is potential for negative impacts on human health,” US health researcher Kristie Ebi told the Washington Post.
Ending racial differences
With rising temperatures, more lands in the world will turn into deserts. Many people will be forced to leave their homelands and live elsewhere. In turn, this could mean that the appearance of people could become more similar. “In just 125 years, there may be far fewer people with really dark skin or pale skin,” US biologist Scott Solomon told the Daily Mail. “More and more people will have olive and brown-colored complexions (肤色).” More importantly, this could mean racism may become a thing of the past.
Making insects hungrier
Human beings or other mammals can keep a stable body temperature, while insects usually adapt their body temperature based on the environment. According to Science Daily, insects will become hungrier and need more food in warmer surroundings. That’s because a higher body temperature can increase insects’ metabolism (新陈代谢). “In addition, warmer temperatures will increase the reproductive rates of insects,” Curtis Deutsch, a professor at Washington University in the US, told Science Daily.
Helping scientists find historic sites
Due to global warming, the UK experienced an extremely hot and dry summer last year. As a result, many grassy areas in the country turned yellow or even dried out completely. Because of this, many unusual and interesting patterns hidden in some of these areas were exposed. After studying some of these patterns, scientists found Neolithic (新石器时代的) monuments and a Roman farm, which are believed to date back to around 5,000 years ago.
【1】What is this passage mainly about?
A.The harmful effects of global warming.
B.The possible causes of global warming.
C.Some ways to slow down global warming.
D.The influences of global warming on our lives.
【2】Which skin color will be more common in the future according to Solomon?
A.Brown. B.Pale. C.White. D.Dark.
【3】What was found in Britain because of the hot and dry weather?
A.An ancient farm with patterns.
B.Unusual patterns in some areas.
C.New landscapes with monuments.
D.Grassy areas with different colors.

Recently, my husband and three kids were playing in the Mediterranean, swimming and floating in the perfect sea. It was ridiculously beautiful in Majorca, Spain. The way the sun danced across the water and how the blue horizon was dotted with sailboats were such beautiful scenes. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes.
My husband and I always dreamed about taking our kids on a trip around the world. It was something we always wanted to do one day. It was one of the things we finally talked about when we imagined our life with our children.
Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans. We spent dozens of hours discussing, researching and planning. We had to learn how to “road school” our kids and arrange time off from work. We renewed our passports and then packed our bags. We showed our kids the world. It was about experiencing dozens of flights, trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, diverse and fascinating the world is. We wanted them to learn all we had learned ourselves through our own travels as young adults.
But there was something more than that. What we really wanted was to slow down time. We wanted the days to last a bit longer and the weeks to take their time. The years with our children are going too fast. We wanted to put brakes on our busy lives for a year and just be with our kids. We wanted a break from the daily morning routine of making lunches, eating breakfast and rushing out of the door in time for school. We needed a family time-out.
It was a wonderful two-month trip in Europe, full of unbelievable moments. And when we look back at our lives, I know we’ll be glad we did it. I know we’ll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family.
【1】What was the author’s attitude to the trip when she planned it?
A.Positive. B.Casual. C.Doubtful. D.Flexible.
【2】What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Making preparations for their vacation.
B.Having fun in the perfect Mediterranean.
C.Learning to study during trips as young adults.
D.Experiencing a different and wonderful world.
【3】What was the author’s main purpose in taking this trip?
A.To educate her kids to value their life.
B.To promise her children to see the world.
C.To enjoy a family break away from their busy life.
D.To teach her kids what they cannot learn in school.
【4】How did the author feel after her two-month trip in Europe?
A.Confident. B.Exhausted. C.Anxious. D.Satisfied.

Science fiction is probably the only type in which anything can happen. From cities in space to robots taking over the earth, the future is never a dull place in sci-fi novels or movies. However, the task of this popular type is not only to predict the future, but also to reflect real life.
Just take a look at The Stone Sky, written by US author N. K. Jemisin, which won the Nebula Award for Best Novel of 2017. One of the reasons why the book was recognized was that it matches up with reality and shows modern social mentality. The Stone Sky tells a story happening on a broken earth, which often suffers natural disasters. In the novel, the earth “is not simply damaged, it is broken: its current condition was actively inflicted (强加) upon through the foolishness of humankind”, sci-fi blog Skulls in the Stars noted.
Faced with the earth’s constant changes, the characters in the book react in many different ways. Essun and her daughter Nassun both try to save the planet. Essun wants to repair the broken world, but Nassun desires to wreck it and create a new one. This difference casts light on the cultural anxieties in the real world, in which rebellious (叛逆的) young people want to break rules and traditions, while the elders try to keep them, the New York Times commented.
Generational idea aside, the book also includes real-life race issues and even adds some sarcasm (讽刺) to them. In the story, the dark-skinned people from the hot regions of the earth are regarded as the advanced race, while the paler people from the Antarctic are viewed as inferior (较差的). Yet the unconditional love between Essun and Nassun brings warmth to readers’ hearts. As Jemisin notes at the end of The Stone Sky, “Where there is pain in this book, it is real pain; where there is anger, it is real anger; where there is love, it is real love.”
【1】Why is science fiction special according to the first paragraph?
A.It reflects our real life.
B.It excites people easily.
C.Anything can happen in it.
D.People often suffer a lot in it.
【2】The underlined word “wreck” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ___”.
A.abandon B.ruin C.change D.improve
【3】How do the characters in The Stone Sky react to the constant changes of the earth?
A.The younger wants to build a completely new world.
B.Most of them would like to get along well with nature.
C.The older waits hopefully for the earth to improve itself.
D.Few of them think it possible to save the earth from its fate.
【4】What makes The Stone Sky stand out from other sci-fi novels?
A.Its prediction of the future world.
B.Its description of unconditional love.
C.Its reflection of reality and social problems.
D.Its explanation of the foolishness of humankind.

Shane Gero, a scientist at Aarhus University in Denmark, spent 6 years studying sperm whales (抹香鲸), which communicate through very loud clicks. He found that sperm whales in the Caribbean Sea had different clicks from those in the Pacific Ocean. He even “translated” the clicks from a group of Caribbean sperm whales, believing them to say, “I’m from the Caribbean, are you?”, reported National Geographic. As well as being used for communication, the clicks also allow whales to develop a relationship with one another, according to Gero.
Apart from sperm whales, other animals like wolves and apes also have different regional accents. Researchers analyzed the howls of different species of wolves. They found that red wolves, Arctic wolves and other wolves have howls that vary in pitch (音调). In other words, they have their own dialects.
According to Darcy Kelley from Columbia University, most animals learn their accents naturally. For example, macaques (猕猴) start speaking their dialect as soon as they are born. Scientists placed some macaques in a new environment where their playmates all spoke a different dialect. But the macaques still spoke their own dialect. Their environment had no influence on their communication, according to the Washington Post.
“In most species, communication appears to have a genetic basis,” Kelley explained in the Washington Post. “However, among a small number of species, animals can learn from others and develop their own accents.”
Fruit flies are a good example. According to Science Daily, they send messages through their wing movements. Scientists found that fruit flies can only communicate efficiently with others of the same species. However, they can learn new dialects by spending time around other species.
“A proper accent is vital to mating and warning the coming of enemies, which is the basis of survival,” Kelley told the Washington Post. A species can’t risk changing their own dialect and learning a new one.
【1】What does the author want to show by talking about the sperm whales at the beginning?
A.Animals have different dialects.
B.Sperm whales live in different oceans.
C.Animals can speak different local languages.
D.Whales communicate through clicking noises.
【2】Why do researchers believe that wolves have their own dialects?
A.Wolves are wild animals using language.
B.Wolves live in different areas of the world.
C.There are different kinds of wolves in the world.
D.Wolves of different kinds howl at different pitches.
【3】According to Kelley, what can dialects help animals to do?
A.Have a better chance of survival.
B.Fight with other species for food.
C.Communicate with other species better.
D.Pass on information to the next generation.
【4】What might be the best title for this passage?
A.Dialects Matter to Animals
B.Wild Animals Have Own Dialects
C.Animals Develop Accents to Survive
D.Animal Accents Vary with Environment

During the outbreak of COVID-19 (新冠肺炎), almost everyone in China wears a mask to protect themselves against the virus.【1】
According to the Global Times, different attitudes toward wearing masks largely lie in the cultures. In the West, people generally believe that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is simply unnecessary. Siva Kumar from the US is one of them. “Masks can only protect you from particulate matter (颗粒物质) in the air you breathe, but they can’t hold up microbes (微生物),” Kumar told China Daily. “【2】”
US infection prevention specialist Eli Perencevich told Forbes, “The average healthy person shouldn’t be wearing masks.” She added, “If they wear them incorrectly, it can increase the risk of infection because they’re touching their faces more often.”
However, for people in Asian countries like China, wearing a mask is deep-rooted in their culture. 【3】 In such uncertain and potentially dangerous time, many people have taken theresponsibility to wear masks to ensure the safety of their communities.
Chen Xinjie, a media worker in Beijing, said, “Wearing the mask for a long time is hot, stuffy (闷热的) and uncomfortable. 【4】”
Influenced by social cultures, the attitudes toward wearing a mask can be different in the East and West. But as US essayist Ralph Emerson once said, “【5】”
A.But as a member of the group, it’s our duty to do so.
B.We must each respect others even as we respect ourselves.
C.If you always wear a mask, you will reduce the risk of disease.
D.However, many people in the West are unwilling to wear masks.
E.Wearing a mask when you’re healthy will cause stress for others.
F.Wearing a mask is not just a cultural symbol but a sign of self-protection.
G.Valuing collectivism, Asians always want to contribute to the groups they belong to.
