Inventors are always at work, dreaming up new technologies. Some inventions help us solve problems. Others make life easier, or more fun. Here, TFK(Time for Kids) presents 3 of our favorite inventions. See how they make us live a better life.
Stopping Sickness
Christine Schindler is an engineer. She wanted to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses. So she created PATHSPOT. It uses light to scan a person’s hands for harmful germs. Restaurant employees hold their hands beneath the scanner. Then the scanner judges whether they must be rewashed. About 100 locations have started using the product since it launched in May.
Talking Eyes
For people who are blind or have other visual problems, the ORCAM MYEYE 2 could be a game changer. It might also prove useful for people with reading difficulties. Described as “talking glasses,” this AI device can be attached to any eyeglass frame. It can identify faces. It can also read text aloud. Fitting all this power into such a small device is like “putting an elephant in a small closet,” says Amnon Shashua, the inventor of the technology. Now the device can be bought online.
Sport-safe
Research shows that playing football increases the risk of brain injury. Still, about a million kids under the age of 13 play football, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. That’s where the VICIS ZERO1 YOUTH football helmet comes in. It has thick, force-absorbing support on the front and sides, where kids are likely to take the hardest hits on the field. Players on 1,500 youth teams have worn the helmet.
【1】What is the function of Pathspot?
A.Killing the germs on hands. B.Checking if hands are clean.

Claire Wyatt, a 24-year-old British volunteer, led eight Cambodians living with disabilities on a 155-mile bike ride from Phnom Penh, the nation’s capital, to Siem Reap to raise money and deliver supplies to those in need in the coronavirus pandemic(新冠病毒大流行).
“Leading this trip was an incredibly special experience for me,” said Claire. “Not only was I encouraged by the determination of each and every rider, but also the team taught me every day not to focus on their disability.”
When she was first asked to lead the trip, Claire admitted, she was feeling nervous about her team traveling such a distance in just a few days because cycling with a disability can come with added physical and emotional challenges.
One team member named Dy, who lost an arm in an accident, biked using just one arm to balance. Another named Vulta could only pedal on one side due to polio(小儿麻痹). Despite all the difficulties, Claire realized quickly that she didn’t have to worry about her team. She saw them deal with rough area that she had seen abled cyclists give up on before.
The volunteers covered the distance in just four days, not only helping so many people across the country, but also overcoming huge difficulties to get there.
“The best thing about this ride is that the riders have all volunteered their time to do this. They are so enthusiastic about Cambodia and raising money for others in need,” said Claire. “The money raised will feed 99 families in Siem Reap.”
Claire recalled her favorite moment of the experience, when one of the cyclists pushed an exhausted teammate up a hill for 2 miles. “One moment that stood out for me was when Naret, our only female rider, was feeling tired,” she said. “Her fellow rider gently put his hand on her back and pushed her for 2 miles! They were encouraging each other to push through the tiredness.”
【1】Why did Claire and eight Cambodians cycle 155 miles?
A.To challenge themselves. B.To help out needy people.
C.To take part in a competition. D.To raise money for the disabled.
【2】What worried Claire before the ride?
A.She might be injured on the road. B.She would be unable to lead the team.
C.Her team might be looked down on. D.Her team couldn’t finish the route.
【3】Which of the following can best describe the team?
A.Confident, calm and friendly. B.Honest, patient and open-minded.
C.Strong-minded, brave and caring. D.Curious, creative and experienced.
【4】What did Claire think of the journey?
A.It could have taken less time.
B.It was amazing and inspiring.
C.It changed her idea about human nature.
D.It was more difficult than she had expected.

Looking great in photos is an art form in itself. The angle, the lighting, the position of your head can determine that picture-perfect moment. And whether you’re eight years old or 80, you can usually count on one classic command before the camera clicks: “Say cheese!” You will respond with a smile and the word, “Cheese!”
The idea of “cheesing” in photos first appeared around the 1940s. The Big Spring Herald, a local Texas newspaper, printed an article that referenced the phrase in 1943. While no one knows for certain who came up with it or why, most believe the word itself makes you smile. The “ch” sound causes you to clench(咬紧) your teeth, and the long “ee” sound parts your lips, making a facial expression that looks like a smile.
Actually, we haven’t always shown our teeth for the camera. Back in the 19th century, only children, farmers, and drunks smiled in photographs; everyone else kept their faces still, which was considered attractive and dignified(庄重的) at that time.
That’s not the only reason people didn’t smile for photos, though. For one, it took several hours for cameras to take the photograph in the first place. As you can imagine, it’s tough to stay still for that long, let alone hold a smile. What’s more, dental hygiene(口腔卫生) was not valued back in the day, and most people didn’t want to show off a mouth full of missing or broken teeth.
Photographs were also expensive, meaning the average person only sat for one or two photos in their lifetime. Because this was such an important occasion, each person was on his or her best behavior—the somber expressions.
No matter the original reason for these straight-faced photos, the trend didn’t last for long. The invention of Kodak’s $1 camera in the 1900s, along with the rise of the Hollywood movie industry, allowed more and more “everyday” moments to be captured on film. Thus, smiling in photographs became standard—and so did saying “cheese”.
【1】Which of the following is unknown to us?
A.Who actually invented the phrase “say cheese”.
B.When the phrase “say cheese” first appeared in print.
C.How the word “cheese” forces people to wear a smile.
D.Why people say the word “cheese” while taking photos.
【2】Why did most people refuse to smile for photos in the past?
A.They were too proud to show off their teeth.
B.They might have some problems with their teeth.
C.They wanted to give photographers more dignity.
D.They disliked sitting still and smiling for a long time.
【3】What might the underlined word “somber” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Funny. B.Unique.
C.Serious. D.Creative.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What Is the Standard Camera Pose
B.Why We Say “Cheese” When Taking Pictures
C.The Meaning of the Word “Cheese”
D.What Expressions Were Fit for Photos in the Past

Self-driving cars are just around the corner. Such vehicles will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could cut down on traffic, reduce pollution and limit accidents. But how should driverless cars handle emergencies (突发情况)? People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some pedestrians in the road. Even with braking, it’s too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence must decide whether to swerve (急转弯). To save the pedestrians, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into oncoming traffic? What if such options would likely kill the car’s passengers?
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. Survey participants mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. That included swerving into walls (or otherwise sacrificing their passengers) to save a larger number of pedestrians. But there is a hitch (困境). Those same surveyed people want to ride in cars that protect passengers at all costs—even if the pedestrians would now end up dying. Jean Bonnefon is a psychologist at the Toulouse School of Economics in France. He and his colleagues reported their findings in Science.
“Autonomous cars can completely change transportation”, says study coauthor Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral dilemma (道德两难) that could slow its acceptance.
Makers of driverless cars are in a tough spot, Bonnefon’s group warns. Most buyers would want their car to be programmed to protect them in preference to other people. However, regulations might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers. If so, all the potential benefits of driverless cars would be lost.
Compromises might be possible, Kurt Gray says. He is a psychologist at the University of North Carolina. He thinks that even if all driverless cars are programmed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those vehicles might be dangerous to pedestrians on rare occasions. But they “won’t speed, won’t drive drunk and won’t text while driving, which would be a win for society.”
【1】The underlined word “challenge” in paragraph 2 refers to____________.
A.people’s negative attitudes towards self-driving cars
B.how self-driving cars reduce traffic accidents
C.the technical problems that self-driving cars have
D.how self-driving cars handle emergencies
【2】According to the text, online surveys show that_____________.
A.self-driving cars’ artificial intelligence needs improvement
B.the busy traffic may be a problem for self-driving cars
C.people are in a moral dilemma about driverless cars
D.self-driving cars should be designed to protect drivers
【3】What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A.Regulations are in favour of drivers.
B.Most people dislike self-driving cars now.
C.Self-driving car makers are in a difficult situation.
D.The potential benefits of driverless cars are ignored.
【4】What is Kurt Gray’s attitude toward self-driving cars?
A.Favorable. B.Doubtful.
C.Critical. D.Disapproving.

How to store food properly is one of those things people can’t seem to come to an agreement on. Check the kitchen of any given household and you’ll find onions in the refrigerator, ketchup in the pantry(食品储藏柜), and vice versa.【1】, there are rules about food storage that can keep the taste and extend the lifespan of your goods when followed properly.
【2】. Many fruits and vegetables will quickly rot if left out on the counter, while others will lose flavor if they’re refrigerated. Here is a general rule of thumb: 【3】, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated at home. That means citruses, bananas, and pineapples can be left out in a fruit bowl, while berries, broccoli and leafy greens need to be refrigerated. Potatoes and onions should be stored outside the refrigerator in a place where sunlight can’t reach them. 【4】. While they can last a few days on the countertop, there is no shortcoming to refrigerate them: According to Real Simple, apples in the refrigerator can last up to three weeks without getting brown or wrinkly.
Another thing that can let people make mistakes when they’re putting away their groceries is condiments(调味品). 【5】. However, these suggestions don’t always need to be followed. Many condiments are high in vinegar and other preservatives(防腐剂). That means they won’t become bad sitting at room temperature, even if the packaging seal has been broken. Soy sauce, honey, and chutney can all be stored in the pantry, though keeping them in the refrigerator won’t hurt.
A.If you won’t be eating them any time soon
B.One of the biggest sources of confusion is fresh produce
C.The one exception to this rule is how to store apples
D.If you didn’t find something in the refrigerated section of the store
E.A lot of sauce bottles say to put them in the refrigerator after opening
F.Though proper ways to store food may be a mystery to many people
G.Food storage is just one thing people often get wrong in their kitchens
