On a very cold night my new friend and I were in downtown Seattle when a strange man walked up to us. Behind him was a woman pushing a stroller with a child inside. The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t zipped. The man began to tell us that he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live and was waiting for his first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back to us.
The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the man was reaching out his hand to take the money, I put my hand on my new friend’s hand and said,“Can I talk to you for a minute?”
I told him about how my mother worked in Seattle and every day people asked her for money on her way to work. She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were scamming those people with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child being out of the cold, they would have at least zipped his jacket or covered him with his blanket.
My friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people who cheat others. I also know there are people who are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.”
I am now 37 years old and have never forgotten what he said to me. I don’t even remember his name. He could have been an angel for all I know. But I do remember that that experience changed the way I looked at different situations.

【4】From the friend’s words, we can learn that ____.
A.he knew the stranger’s true meaning
B.he didn’t regret his act of kindness even if cheated
C.before helping others, think it over
D.he had helped at least 10 people

Many people fear a visit to the dentist. They are not so much afraid of the doctor, but of the dental equipment and treatments. For over a century, dentists have been repairing the bad tooth in the same way. They first remove the bad tooth tissue with an electric-powered drill. Then, they fill the hole with a certain material. If the hole is deep and near the nerve of the tooth, it can be very painful. The worst part is that the process of drilling and filling the hole has to be repeated for the entire life of that tooth.
A British company called Reminova says it has developed a kind of technology that will end the need for mechanical cleaning of bad teeth. It also says the technology speeds up a natural process of tooth repair. The new treatment begins with a cleaning of the hole. This does not require power tools. The dentist covers the problem area with a mineral solution, and then uses an electrical current to harden this material. The electricity is too weak for the patient to feel. And the hardened mineral completely fills the hole.
Researchers say this method could be especially useful for children. Sometimes children have bad experiences at the dentist’. They fear the drilling and injections. If they have a better experience of going to the dentist’, they’ll be much more positive in later life and probably become much more regular patients. The new method is most efficient on the early-stage bad tooth. The whole treatment lasts about as long as a normal drill-and-fill visit. They believe the new technology can be further developed for treating the late-stage bad tooth.
【1】What do we know about the traditional treatment for the bad tooth?
A.The experience can be unpleasant. B.The bad tooth will be taken out directly.
C.It costs much money. D.The bad tooth can be cured once and for all.
【2】Which of the following is TRUE about the new technology?
A.It aims to speed up the process of tooth repair. B.More power tools will be used for treatment.
C.The patient often gets an electric shock. D.It causes less pain than the old one.
【3】We can infer from the last paragraph that the new treatment ____.
A.is only performed on children now B.will take the patient much more time
C.needs to be improved for wider use D.costs more than the drill-and-fill visit
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Different Ways To Repair Bad Teeth B.It’s Necessary To Keep Teeth Healthy
C.How To Prevent Children From Having Bad Teeth D.Days of Painful Tooth Repair May Be Over

If you shoo(赶走鸟时发出的声音) a pigeon, that bird is likely to remember you and know to stay out of your way the next time you cross paths, according to a new study. Researchers found that wild, untrained pigeons can recognize individual people’s faces and are not fooled by a change of clothes.
At a park in Paris, two researchers of similar build and skin colour, but wearing different-coloured lab coats, fed a group of pigeons.
One researcher ignored the pigeons after feeding them, allowing them to eat the food, while the other was hostile(充满敌意的) and chased them away. This was followed by a second session when neither researcher chased away the pigeons.
The experiment was repeated several times, with the pigeons continuously recognizing the individuals and avoiding the researcher who had first chased them away even when the participant no longer did so. Exchanging lab coats during the experiments did not confuse the pigeons, and they continued to stay away from the researcher who had been initially hostile.
“It is very likely that the pigeons recognized the researchers by their faces, since the individuals were both female and of a similar age, build and skin colour,”study researcher Dalila Bovet of the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Defense said in a statement.
“Interestingly, the pigeons, without training, spontaneously(自发的) used the most relevant characteristics of the individuals ( probably facial traits ), instead of the lab coats that covered 90 percent of the body, ”Bovet added.
The researchers noted that the birds appear to be able to tell from humans and are aware that clothing colour is not a good way to tell humans apart. They theorize that this recognition ability may have come about over the long period of association with humans, from early domestication to many years of living in cities.
【1】For the researchers, which of the following elements is not decisive to draw the conclusion of the experiment?
A.The similar build and skin colour.
B.In the same park.
C.The same gender(性别).
D.A change of different-coloured lab clothes.
【2】The underlined word“traits”in the 6th paragraph can be replaced by“____”.
A.outlines B.characteristics
C.marks D.traces
【3】According to the researchers, why are birds aware that it is not a good way to tell humans by clothing colour?
A.It may be the result of the long period of association with humans.
B.Birds are very clever creatures.
C.Different clothes may have different colours.
D.Clothes can be exchanged, but faces can’t be changed easily.
【4】Where can we most probably read this text?
A.In a travel handbook. B.In a history book.
C.In a science report. D.In a student textbook.

Why Do We Like Personality Tests?
This article will explore reasons why we like taking personality tests.
One of the reasons we like to take personality tests is that we want to learn about ourselves.【1】, we like personality tests, according to a psychologist. For some things, like our emotions, we have access to information about ourselves that others don't.【2】To find out, we're better off asking our best friends than taking the personality tests.
Another simple reason we tend to take personality tests is that we have an inborn need for a sense of belonging. A friend of mine recently described her experience of taking the personality test for the first time when she was in high school. As an artist, she felt different from her peers, and she said it was a great comfort to know that “there were others out there like me”. 【3】
Finally we want simple ways to understand other people. After all, relating to other people is hard. If it were easy, books and services about navigating relationships of all kinds wouldn't be a multi-million-dollar industry. 【4】We then respond to him in a way that allows for smooth social interactions.
【5】, we store information about them in something called a schema(模式,计划)-a mental representation of what that person, situation, or object is like. Over time, through many experiences, we develop a rich set of ideas and expectations about people we perceive(察觉,感觉) to be a certain category.
A.This personality type doesn't fit you well
B.When we encounter a person,a situation,or an object
C.If we arc familiar with the personality types in these systems
D.Because we hope they will reveal unknown facts about ourselves
E.Feeling understood and normal, perhaps for the first time, is a powerful experience
F.Knowing someone's personality type allows us to quickly and easily understand him
G.However, there might be things about ourselves we don't know, like how clever or creative we are

As is often read in the newspaper, wildlife, especially the rare species, is threatening with extinction. Human beings are making an attempt to hunt wild animal for a big profit, which,of course, result in a sharp decrease in the number of animals. But it is high time that we take quick action to protect them. It’s quite necessarily for every citizen to realize the importance of animal protection. Only by knowing its significance can people develop a sense of the responsibility. People will surely take it for granted that they have the duty prevent any killing of wild animals. So a national campaign should be set about, thus give animals a good living environment.
