I was drowned(淹没) in work. I was convinced that it was because my job was demanding, but as I changed my job and eventually became self-employed and I could call my own shots, I was still drowned in work and things were still out of control. Now I come to realize that I have a tendency to drown myself in work and the problem is not the job I’m in.
One of the reasons why work-life balance is hard is that we attribute (把……归咎于) the problem to our environment when we ourselves are the problem actually. I enjoy making my clients happy. “Dushka, your work is unbelievable.” “Dushka, we would not have survived without you.” This is my instinctive (本能的) desire. I, a good girl, should make someone I love proud. What can get in the way of work-life balance is that approval often matters more than the balance I claim I want.
I am ambitious and want to do great things and as soon as a project is done I’m hungry for the next one. I want hard work. I want to push myself and test myself. I want to learn. Sometimes work-life balance is hard because there is a difference between what I say I want and what I really want.
My life is constantly changing. If a friend visits me from out of town I want to work less, if I happen to be particularly inspired I want to work more, and if a family member needs me I don’t want to have to worry about work at all. Work-life balance is hard because my definition of it is a moving target. It means different things to me depending on different situations.
What is work-life balance, anyway? Does it mean I get to go home every day when the clock strikes 5:00 pm? Does it mean that I work hard for a few weeks and then take a long weekend off? Do I want daily balance, or do I want things to balance out over the course of a few weeks, even months?
On one side, work-life balance doesn’t mean that the only way to do something well is to do it yourself. Your ego (自我) gets in the way of your being free. On the other side, work-life balance can be hard if you are worried that someone else can do your job better than yourself. Then you live in a constant state of suspicion (怀疑) and never allow yourself to step away. Your fear is calling the shots, not your ambitions.
Work-life balance can be hard if you are more worried about looking good than doing good work. If you want to make sure everyone sees you are the first one to come and the last one to leave, what others think of you has more weight than your desire of getting home in time for dinner.
My boss assures me that employees come first and that people are the most important, yet I don’t see him telling me it’s time to go home because I worked really late the night before.
Wait a minute. Why should my work-life balance be the company’s problem, in particular when I’ve already identified that my needs are ever-changing? How can I expect someone else to stay on top of that? The only person responsible for that is me.

When a big boat, like a cruise ship, goes through the ocean, it often creates waves. This happens when the large engines on the back of the cruise ship cause the water on the ocean’s surface move up and down violently. These waves move out from the boat in both directions. If you are captaining a smaller boat, you’d better steer clear of a ship’s wave, so that your boat is not surfing on the waves, causing it to overturn.
A wave is a pattern of motion. When you look at a wave, it may appear as simply water moving across the surface of the ocean. In fact, this is false. The water is actually not moving in the same direction as the wave. While the wave itself—the pattern of motion—is moving across the surface of the ocean, the water is actually moving in a circular motion, which brings the water molecules back to their original position. The water merely gives the appearance of moving forward.
If this is confusing, think of the kind of wave you do at a baseball stadium. Viewed from a distance, the wave is clearly moving across the stadium. But the thing that makes up the wave—the people—are not moving across the stadium, they’re just moving up and down in their seats. This is just like the water in an ocean wave. A lot of water is moving up and down, which gives water the appearance of moving along with the wave.
Surfers pay a lot of attention to waves. If you’re not in an area where the waves are suitable for surfing, then you can’t surf. Usually, surfers gather in areas known for big waves—waves that rise high off the ocean’s surface. If the wave is bigger, then the surfer is often able to surf for longer distances and perform more tricks. The height of a wave is known as its amplitude. If you could make a wave freeze, then you could measure the wave’s amplitude by running a tape measure from the ocean’s surface to the very peak of the wave.
All waves can be measured using amplitude and wavelength. While the waves created by a boat have very small amplitude—sometimes as small as a few centimeters—the wavelength can be very short, as lots of waves are being generated. By contrast, a tsunami has very high amplitude, sometimes more than 100 feet, but a relatively long wavelength, as it’s a high wave.
Waves generated in the same way can have great differences in amplitude and wavelength. For example, think back to the cruise ship. While each ship creates waves caused by the movement of the boat, the properties of each of the waves may be very different. For example, a larger cruise ship, with powerful engines, may create a wave that has high amplitude and a short wavelength. However, if the ship’s engines slow down, they may then start creating less powerful waves at a slower rate. This would cause the waves’ amplitude to decrease, but its wavelength to increase.
【1】What does the phrase “steer clear of a cruise ship’s wave” in the 1st paragraph mean?
A.Keeping awake while steering a ship. B.Getting a clear view of what is ahead.
C.Following the cruise ship very closely. D.Keeping away from the cruise ship.
【2】The author gives an example of wave people do in the stadium in order to________.
A.illustrate(阐明) how excited people are in a basketball stadium
B.clear the confusion over measuring the wave’s amplitude
C.explain why the water appears to move along the waves
D.demonstrate(证明) how to make waves in a basketball stadium
【3】The last paragraph gives us the impression that ________.
A.the more powerful the ships’ engines are, the higher the waves they generate
B.the amplitude of a wave depends on the direction the water moves forward
C.the wave’s amplitude may vary, but its wavelength remain the same
D.measuring the amplitude and wavelength of waves is not quite easy
【4】What is this passage mainly about?
A.What makes the sea water move forwards.
B.How to steer a cruise ship in the rough sea.
C.Why people create waves in the stadium.
D.How waves are created and measured.

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成)in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals.【1】Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
【2】They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent;above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball. where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调)their actions.【3】In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is. for example, trying to gain a high personal point total,he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told,“There is no I in TEAM.”【4】
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛),whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
【5】.An A-team may require a balance-not just A players,but a few generous B players as well.
A. It's not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.

D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要
Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life. It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them. Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable
From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable
On the other hand, people who don't want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can manage a new task
Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modem life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving. Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.
