Macinley Butson was just 16 years old when she first had the idea to try and protect women from more — than — necessary radiation during breast cancer treatments—and now, her invention could be a game-changer in the medical field.
Butson, whose father works in medical physics, has always been interested in science. But she only began researching the harmful side effects of radiation treatment after her father discussed his experience with ineffective cancer treatments in his work. Since Butson had also recently lost a relative to breast cancer, she felt inspired to conduct her own research on the subject. She tried to begin her medical research by consulting scientific journals, but she found their academic terms almost impossible to understand.
She then turned to the Internet to find videos that taught how to read scientific journals. As she went deeper in her research, she stumbled upon a key bit of information: copper (铜)has been shown to be effective at protecting skin from radiation. An idea hit this Australian teen as she was viewing a film on medieval wars in her 10th grade history class. When she saw the scaled (鳞片) patterns of the mail (盔甲),she was inspired to create a wearable protective tool out of copper. She then headed back online and watched videos on how to put together tiny scales. She made her own flexible scale-mail which she now calls SMART: Scale Mail for Radiation Therapy.
When her invention was tested in a laboratory setting, it reduced surface exposure to unnecessary radiation by 75%. And now Butson is working on getting her SMART into clinical settings for use.

Recently according to a new research, humans have had a link to starches (含淀粉的食物) for up to 120,000 years — that’s more than 100,000 years longer than we’ve been able to plant them in the soil during the time of the ice Age’s drawing to an end. The research is part of an ongoing study into the history of Middle Stone Age communities.
An international team of scientists identified evidence of prehistoric starch consumption in the Klasies River Cave, in present-day South Africa. Analyzing small, ashy, undisturbed hearths(壁炉) inside the cave, the researchers found “pieces of burned starches” ranging from around 120,000 to 65,000 years old. It made them the oldest known examples of starches eaten by humans.
The findings do not come as a complete surprise — but rather as welcome confirmation of older theories that lacked the related evidence. The lead author Cynthia Larbey said that there had previously only been genetic biological evidence to suggest that humans had been eating starch for this long. This new evidence, however, takes us directly to the dinner table, and supports the previous assumption that humans’ digestion genes gradually evolved in order to fit into an increased digestion of starch.
Co-author Sarah Wurz said, “The starch remains show that these early humans living in the Klasies River Cave could battle against their tough environment and find suitable foods and perhaps medicines. And as much as we all still desire the tubers (块茎), these cave communities were gilling starches such as potatoes on their foot-long hearths. They knew how to balance their diets as well as they could, with fats from local fish and other animals.”
As early as the 1990s, some researchers started to study the hearths in the Klasies River Cave. Scientist Hilary Deacon first suggested that these hearths contained burned plants. At the time, the proper methods of examining the remains were not yet available. We now know human beings have always been searching for their desired things.
【1】When did humans begin to farm starches?
A.After the Ice Age. B.After the Middle Stone Age.
C.About 20,000 years ago. D.About 100,000 years ago.
【2】What was the previous assumption of starches?
A.Starch diet promoted food culture. B.Starch diet shaped humans’ evolution.
C.Starches had a variety of functions. D.Starches offered humans rich nutrition.
【3】What can we learn about the early humans described by Sarah Wurz?
A.They were smart and tough. B.They preferred plants to meat.
C.They were generally very healthy. D.They got along with each other.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Great Civilization of South Africa B.The Evolution of Foods in History

A lecture hall should be like a church-a little too dark, much too cold, and uncomfortably silent. You should feel guilty opening your water bottle, because all 200 people in the room can hear it.
So when I’m trying to pay attention, the last thing you should be doing is carrying on a conversation about your last weekend party or anything else.
During the past school term,I’ve had enough. One of my biggest complaints of large class sizes is the tendency for three to five friends to sit together and loudly whisper each others’ ears off for an hour and 15 minutes straight. My stupid monkey brain can’t help but focus on your conversation about the difference between ash blonde and light blonde colored hair that look exactly the same.
To me,it just feels like a waste. You’re actively wasting money, and missing vital information. We(and the government)pay quite a lot for our education, but you are here to ignore someone significantly more experienced than us,in classes we picked, for hours every week.
I know major requirements can be boring, but this is still an education. It requires two-way effort. Most of students here have at least one goal in common:success. Not every checkpoint on that path is going to be filled with joy.Sit down, shut up,and force yourself to listen to your professor.Society tells us it will eventually pay off.
Or maybe it won’t because you don’t want to.
I actually don’t care if you decide to pay little or no attention to the lecture itself,so long as you’re not being disturbing.
For those willing to try,in 20 years when you finally pay off your debt with your fairly secure white-collar job, you’ll look back and be happy that you went through the lectures.
【1】Why is a lecture hall compared to a church by the author?
A.Both places are open to the public.
B.Both places are supposed to be quiet.
C.Both places can seat over 200 people.
D.Both places help rid people of their guilt.
【2】What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A.He likes persuading others.
B.He tends to make complaints.
C.He values education as a duty.
D.He cares much about friendship.
【3】How does the author feel when writing the passage?
A.Annoyed.
B.Deserted.
C.Thrilled.
D.Worried.
【4】What may be the best title for the text?
A.Hard Work Pays Off!
B.Focus on the Lectures!
C.Wasting Your Time Is a Shame!
D.Mind Your In-Class Behavior!
