Buttons are found on all sorts of clothing. They are usually small and round and made of metal or plastic. They fasten, or connect, one piece of clothing to another. They make sure your clothes don’t fall off. When we are speaking or writing in English, buttons can be just as useful.
Men or women often wear button-down clothes to the office. Button-down as an adjective means to be conservative(保守的) or traditional. People who are described as buttoned-down stay close as possible to the normal way of dressing and behaving. They don’t wear crazy clothing or do unusual things. People and events can both be described as buttoned-down.
If someone is buttoned-up, he or she seems very business-like. In personal relationships, a buttoned-up person is cold and standoffish, meaning they physically and emotionally keep away from others. Buttoned-up people are not warm or friendly. And they do not share their inner thoughts and feelings with others.
In the expression “button up”, button is a verb. It means to stop talking. Now, let’s say you find yourself buttonholed in a conversation at a party. The person just keeps talking and talking and talking! Finally, you can’t take it any longer. You tell the person to button it! This is a direct, but unacceptable way of saying “stop talking”. Button you lip is another equally rude but effective to stop a person who talks too much.
Another kind of difficult person is someone who pushes your buttons. To push someone’s buttons means to know exactly how to get that person angry or upset. People who like to push other people’s buttons usually do it for selfish reasons. First they find a person’s weak point. Then they use it to upset him.
【1】Which of the following best describes button-down clothes?
A. Comfortable. B. Attractive.
C. Formal. D. Loose.
【2】What does the underlined part “button it” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cheer up! B. Calm down!
C. Turn away! D. Shut up!
【3】What does a person want to do if he pushes your buttons?
A. Help you out. B. Make you suffer.
C. Show he knows you well. D. Point out your weak points.

She was sitting up at four months, walking at eight months and completing 100-piece jigsaw puzzles(拼图玩具)at 15 months. So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black girl ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It’s pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail.
Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old! Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, her speech was perfect. She already knew her colours, letters and was able to read. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know she was learning all of it.
Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At six she was in the fourth grade, at ten she took her first high school class in Maths. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German.
Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies, she calls herself scatterbrained(注意力不集中的)and she always delays(拖延)things up to the last minute. This gives her the motivation to really do something.
In her free time, Abigail plays basketball, surfs the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends: they are all 17 and 18.She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needed to be in a situation where she had to fail in order to learn. “She found playing the piano very difficult, but it made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, she won’t be able to learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes”.
【1】Why is it no surprise that Abigail went to university at 15?
A. She was a hard-working girl.
B. She was always ahead of other kids.
C. She was brought up in a special way.
D. She was no different than other black girls.
【2】What can we learn about Abigail?
A. She is crazy about sports.
B. She has a gift for language.
C. Her favourite subject is maths.
D. Her success is due to good habits.
【3】According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Abigail has a better education than others.
B. Abigail won’t be a normal girl without music.
C. Nancy didn’t like Abigail when she was a baby.
D. Abigail usually does things when they are emergent.
【4】What did Nancy’s words mean?
A. Abigail failed to have a normal life.
B. Abigail needed to learn from failures.
C. Abigail was good at playing the piano.
D. Abigail wanted to always be successful.

If you haven’t heard or seen anything about Road Rage in the last few months, you’ve probably been avoiding the media. There have been countless stories about this scary phenomenon, considered a type of aggressive driving. You have most likely encountered aggressive driving or Road Rage recently if you drive at all.
While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as disturbing. For instance, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, 41,907 people died on the highway last year. Of those deaths, the agency estimates that about two-thirds were caused at least in part by aggressive driving behavior.
Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now, and why is it something that seemed almost nonexistent a few short years ago? Experts have several theories, and all are probably partially correct. One suggestion is overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on the roads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35 percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars in the same amount of space; and the problem is more serious in urban areas. Also, people have less time and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities into the day, stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors, when combined in certain situations, can spell Road Rage.
You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a slower driver, sounded the horn long and hard at another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any of these situations, watch out!
Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you, there are things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are susceptible (易受影响的)to Road Rage, the key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the target of another driver’s rage, do everything possible to get away from the other driver safely, including avoiding eye contact and getting out of their way.
【1】The first sentence in Para. 1 implies that ______.
A.one may be angered by media reports and wants to avoid them
B.the media invented the term “Road Rage” only a few months ago
C.people not interested in the media know little about recent happenings
D.Road Rage has received much media coverage in the last few months
【2】The underlined word “spell” in Para. 3 means ________.
A.relieve B.prevent C.spread D.cause
【3】Which of the following characterizes aggressive driving?
A.Talking while driving. B.Driving at high speed.
C.Sounding the horn when passing. D.Shouting at another driver.
【4】The last paragraph is intended to _________.
A.tell people how to deal with Road Rage
B.inform people how aggressive drivers could be
C.show people how to control themselves when angry
D.warn people against eye contact with another driver
