Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)? Write them down!
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.
【1】What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A.It helps you to get good marks in tests. B.It’s a basic skill in researching a paper.
C.It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says. D.It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
【2】Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
A.To introduce the topic of note-taking. B.To compare writing styles in different times.
C.To give an example of forming good habits. D.To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.
【3】What is suggested in the third paragraph?
A.Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.
B.It’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.
C.It’s not always possible to note down all information in class.
D.A teacher’s style should be taken into consideration when taking notes.
【4】What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?
A.Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
B.Students should put down only key points while listening carefully.
C.Students must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.
D.Students should put down as much information as possible in class.

Knowing how to communicate well needs very personal attention between you and another person, we should face it. Is there a better way to learn how to communicate successfully? Yes, there is. Please follow the basic steps below.
Relax and breathe.
Whether it’s a business meeting or a first date, the first thing you must do in order to communicate is to relax.
When you relax, you are in control. You control your reactions(反应) and your reactions do not control you. Breathing is central to relaxation. Take a few deep breaths and your body will begin to be more relaxed. This will help you apply what you have already known about how to communicate well.
Think and you will be prepared.
Have you heard the old saying “Think before you speak.”? Well, it is true. By thinking ahead about how the conversation might flow(流畅), you will be better prepared, more relaxed and more confident.
Follow the flow of the conversation.
If you are uncomfortable, being silent will only make it worse and make the other person uncomfortable as well. So when all else fails, you should follow through with small talk until a common topic appears.
A good way to keep a conversation going is to ask the other person questions. People love to talk about themselves and if you do this, they will keep the conversation going, thinking very highly of you. Learning good communication skills is not something out of reach. If you make an effort, you will succeed.

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorise a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know memorising seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I was determined to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorise the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively seeking to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorising; she was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
【1】Why did Juliet feel down?
A.Because she failed her science test.
B.Because she had trouble memorising a unit.
C.Because she knew nothing about planting.
D.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
【2】In the writer’s opinion, which was the key to best learning?
A.Memorising. B.Testing.
C.Questioning. D.Understanding.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Making her check the book.
B.Using simple questions to test her.
C.Encouraging her to read the unit.
D.Asking her to teach me the unit.
【4】Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.A Creative Father
B.An Unexpected Test
C.Learning from Teaching
D.Preparing for Teaching

How to Meet New People
Everybody knows that first impressions are important. If you want to know how to meet people, just follow these steps.
●Live in the moment.
To meet new people, the first thing you have to do is to enjoy the present moment of the new conversation. Let go of your expectations and fears. 【1】
When you meet a new person, don’t ask yourself, “How do I look?” or “How do I sound?” Instead, ask, “What would this person like to talk about?” “What matters to this person?”
● 【2】
If you keep up your confidence, people feel that you’re a person who is worth talking to. You should be confident before you walk into a room with new people in it and build your confidence as the conversation goes along. Just smile, talk about the things that you love, and show everyone that you love who you are, where you are, and what you do.
【3】 Stand tall, maintain eye contact, and don’t fidget with your hands or look at the floor. When you introduce yourself, speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard.
●Be positive.
【4】You should smile from time to time. Talk about the things you love, the things that make you happy, and your interests to keep people engaged.
Don’t talk about your long-standing hatred for a certain person. 【5】 The occasional “That’s so true!” or “I know exactly what you mean!” will be far more positive.
A.Stay confident.
B.Body language can help you stay confident.
C.Don’t ask for the person’s number in the middle of the conversation.
D.Don’t nod and agree with what the person is saying every five seconds.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence according to the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
"Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.
