Danez Smith, one of America's most popular young poets and the author of Don't Call Us Dead, recommends his 5 favorite books.
Lilith's Brood by Octavia E. Butler (1989)
This book about aliens from the novelist who predicted "Make America Great Again" asks necessary questions about the harmful structures which we put our faith in despite our intelligence, and also how or if we will evolve out of our most dangerous selves. An essential, human book — with aliens!
The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton (2012)
The book is my bible. Open up to any page and Clifton delivers a word. Whether the subject is roaches, family, death, or surviving, she has a poem for all occasions. She can create the most complicated magic out of the simplest words.
Man vs. Sky by Corey Zeller (2013)
In his brief prose poems, Zeller represents the voice of a recently dead friend as he travels through the afterlife. Besides attracting me with its beauty to this day, it taught me that we can offer the dead not just our grief but our imaginations and dreams as well.
My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi (2014)
I'm a sucker for high school drama, superpowers, good-hearted heroes, and complicated bad characters. This manga(动漫)series is one of my favorite escapes. In a world where everybody and their mama has a superpower (literally), what makes someone a hero isn't about power or strength but about the desire to make people smile. Instant tears.
Deus Ex Nigrum by Jasmine Reid (2019)
I recently picked this chapbook for a prize. It's a marvel of language and heart. Reid's lyrics map the ordinary and the extraordinary with rare and invigorating skill. In a world and a country ever dangerous to the black people, this poet says, "If I am to be a twist ending, let it be that I lived." I am so excited to follow Reid's poems into the future.

Across the globe, we've developed a coffee addiction, and we've become addicted to single-use cups: 600 billion disposable cups are produced and sold annually. But there's a growing push to cut this down.
Here's the problem with disposable coffee cups: The thin, waxy, plastic coating inside makes it tricky to recycle or compost them. So, they most go into a landfill (垃圾填埋场). More than that, it takes a lot of energy and resources to make them. Starbucks and McDonald's are trying to develop a disposable coffee cup that can be both recyclable and compostable. But that's easier said than done. The coffee giants have been dangling a million dollars to anybody who can crack the code.
The Rolling Stones are also thinking about the sustainable cups. If you see the Stones in concert this summer and go to get a drink, there may be no single-use plastic cup for you. The bands approached Michael Martin, who has produced a bunch of big Earth Day concerts, asking for help to eliminate plastic waste. He came up with a simple solution.
"When you come up to get your first beverage(饮料), you put down a $3 deposit, you get a really high-quality Rolling Stones-branded cup," says Martin. "You use it throughout the night, and at the end of the event you can turn your cup in and get your $3 back or you can keep your cup." If you return the heavier plastic cup at the end of the show, it gets washed and used again. Or recycled.
But this idea — returning and reusing a cup — this is not that complicated. So why is this just being tried now? "That's a really good question," says Martin. "In America, we're a throwaway society, and so we're hoping we'll be able to wake people up and change things." He's starting with rock concerts because artists have a pretty powerful platform. I mean, if Mick Jagger tells his fans to stop abusing the planet, who's going to say no to that?
【1】Why is there a growing push to cut single-use cups down?
A.Because too many people are coffee addicts.
B.Because disposable cups are hard to recycle and compost.
C.Because it takes a lot of energy and resources to recycle them.
D.Because Starbucks and McDonald's are dangling a million dollars.
【2】What does the underlined phrase "crack the code" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.develop a cup. B.set up a recycling company.
C.find the password. D.tackle the problem.
【3】What can we infer from Martin's solution?
A.People will wash the cups at the end of the show.
B.People hand in the cup and get 3-dollar reward.
C.People can own the cup by paying 3 dollars.
D.People must pay 3 dollars and return the cup.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Artists have a great impact.
B.Martin is giving a rock concert.
C.Mick Jagger' fans are abusing the planet.
D.Mick Jagger' fans never disagree with him.

The United States is a nation of car owners. Ninety-five percent of households own a car, and 85 percent of people get to work in one. This lifestyle contributes to congestion on our roads and damages the environment. As autonomous vehicles begin to hit the streets over the next decade or so, it's believed that all this will change.
Autonomous vehicles will most likely decrease the number and severity of crashes, allow cars to travel more closely together and improve cooperation between vehicles, all of which tend to reduce traffic jams and increase capacity.
However, this future is not assured. To realize the full potential benefits of driverless cars, we will have to act soon to encourage a culture in which transportation is shared. Many people in the automobile industry assume that driverless vehicles will automatically be shared, but there is little evidence that this is true. Most estimates suggest that driverless cars will eventually be only slightly more expensive than traditional cars, which means they'll be within reach of many consumers, so users are not willing to share rides.
If most people are going to buy-in to a shared-ride culture, they need to get a significant benefit. Saving a few dollars off the fare isn't likely to promote the movement dramatically. A better benefit would be knowing that you're going to reach your destination more quickly. The way to guarantee quick passage is to redesign our roads to give priority to ride-sharing autonomous vehicles like building priority lanes. The cost of travel will also be varied based on how efficiently a vehicle uses the roads. Autonomous vehicles carrying multiple people should get higher priority than those carrying one or none at all.
Decision-makers must push for incentives that encourage the most efficient use of our limited roadway infrastructure(基础设施). The autonomous future is rapidly approaching; it is critical that we act now, while the impacts of autonomous vehicles on traffic jams and emissions are still largely within our control.
【1】What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To tell the severe traffic problem.
C.To prove the necessity of autonomous vehicles.
D.To show the damage of cars to the environment.
【2】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Autonomous vehicles worsen traffic jams on roads.
B.Autonomous vehicles are likely to reduce traffic jams.
C.Saving some fares contributes to shared-ride significantly.
D.Many people have ridden autonomous vehicles to avoid traffic jams.
【3】Which will be a benefit of sharing autonomous vehicles?
A.To save a large amount of money.
B.To promote the development of science and technology.
C.To redesign roads to prioritize car-shared modes.
D.To allow you to reach your destination much more quickly.
【4】Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Driverless Cars Will Make Our Traffic Problems Worse.
B.Autonomous Vehicles Will Make a Difference to Traffic.
C.Decision-makers Should Take Some Measures Quickly.
D.The Current Situation of Cars in the United States is Serious.

In 2015, astronaut Scott Kelly made himself a guinea pig for NASA's "twins study," designed to see what spaceflight does to the human body. It was for all the people who dream of human journeys to Mars and other destinations in space. Kelly rode a rocket into space and spent nearly a year on the International Space Station in low Earth orbit, while his identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, served as the comparison subject and stayed on Earth's surface.
The full results, published Thursday in the journal Science, showed that Scott Kelly experienced numerous physiological and chromosomal(染色体的)changes during his long stay in orbit, including changes in gene expression. His immune system went on high alert, both when he went to space and upon returning to Earth. His body acted as if it were under attack.
One of the most dramatic findings concerned epigenetics(实验胚胎学) — how genes are turned on or off to produce proteins. Gene expression changed in both Kellys during the study but in significantly different ways. The study found that more than 90 percent of Scott Kelly's gene expression changes returned to normal when he landed on the surface. His telomeres(染色体端粒), structures which break over time as part of the natural aging process, lengthened in space. But that didn't necessarily mean being younger, the study found, because most telomeres shortened dramatically when he returned to Earth.
Months later, tests showed that slight changes in telomeres length still remained and left some influence on Scott Kelly, which means he and his brother are no longer identical twins. "He might be at some increased risk for cardiovascular disease or some types of cancer," said Susan Bailey, a biologist at Colorado State University who led one of the investigations in the study.
However, the researchers, echoing what NASA has suggested previously, said the twins study turned up no showstoppers — no shocking health consequences that would surely prevent a human mission to Mars or similar long-duration mission.
【1】What does the underlined expression "a guinea pig" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.a person who is strong enough to become an astronaut.
B.a person who is a leader of space exploration.
C.a person who is picked out for a scientific experiment.
D.a person who is faced with the harsh effects of space flight.
【2】What happens to an astronaut's body during a space flight?
A.The permanent changes in gene expression. B.The aging of cells.
C.The lengthened telomeres. D.The failure in immune system.
【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Scott Kelly will appear younger because his telomeres lengthened in space.
B.A long-duration spaceflight will be banned because of the damage to health.
C.Scott Kelly's gene expression changes were normal when he returned to the surface.
D.Scott Kelly might be more likely to develop cardiovascular disease or some types of cancer.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Gene expression: Physiological Change of Proteins.
B.Space Experiment: Changes in Both Kellys.
C.Mars Exploration: an Unstoppable Human Mission.
D.Shortened Telomeres: the Killer of Astronauts.

Last Saturday I received a call from my close friend, Peter. He asked me to help with his group who provided musical performances at the local hospitals. At first I was unwilling to go because of my unfinished homework, but I was finally persuaded into helping out this one time, which turned out to be an unforgettable and fruitful experience.
That evening, I was picked up by Peter and went to a local hospital with him, taking my guitar and hoping I could sing some solo songs with his musical group.
An extremely large hospital came into our sight. When guided into the hall, we were shocked to find so many patients and staff there. What we saw next aroused our sympathy. Some patients were in wheelchairs or with their arms in bandages, while others were with their drips attached. Some faces were rather pale; some wore worried expressions; some walked as fast as they could. Maybe their days seemed to be dull during the period of their treatment, so our coming brought some color into their lives. Seeing their happy faces, I thought it was worthwhile to join Peter's group.
Among the audience, I spotted one particular young girl aged about 16, who was wearing a head scarf and appeared to be more delighted than the others. When we started our performance, excitement filled the hall. Peter mentioned to me that the young girl I had noticed earlier was singing along with all our songs quietly to herself. At a break, out of curiosity, I asked one of the nurses about the girl. She said that the girl suffered serious burns and was under treatment and that she was a bit down these days, but our performance had lifted her spirits. Our songs moved all the people present. They all cheered for us, including the young girl and we were inspired. Facing these lovely people, we really wanted to do more.
