Pearl and June were good friends and spent most of their time together. They were both very old and they worried about their health. Most of the time they talked about nothing else. They worried about their food. Was it clean? Would it give them pains in the stomach? They worried about the weather. Was it too cold and wet? Would it give them pains in their bones? They worried about pollution in the air. Would it give them pains in their chests (胸部) and throats? They worried about being hurt in a car accident, killed in a plane crash(碰撞), getting sick, and so on. All they could think about was being ill or hurt.
One day they went on a train journey together.

“We’ll buy some bananas,” June said. “They are good to eat and always clean.”

Pearl took out the bananas and gave one to June. Then she peeled the skin of her banana and took a large bite of it. At that moment the train went into atunnel (隧道).Everything went black.

In this age of Facebook and Twitter, we are all supposed to have hundreds of friends. But in fact most of us have just two close friends — down from an average(平均水平) of three 25 years ago, a study says.
Researchers (研究者) say there is no need to worry about that. Instead, they say that while some of us may be getting “more vulnerable (脆弱的)”, many are becoming better at deciding who is their close friend.
The result seems unexpected. Because a lot of young people are trying to make as many “friends” as possible on the Internet.
According to Facebook, the average user usually has 130 friends, but many of these are people who are known by accident or people the user will never meet in real life.
But the researcher, Mr. Brashears says, although the circle(圈子) of friends is getting smaller, which may make us more vulnerable, we’re not as “lonely” as the result shows.
For his study, Mr. Brashears did a survey in more than 2,000 adults aged 18 and older. He found that, modern discussion networks have been smaller in size. It is the same as other researchers’ findings, but few people have become lonelier.
Researchers asked people to list the names of people they had discussed important matters with over the past six months. About 48% of them listed one name, 18 % listed two, and about 29% listed more than two names for these close friends.
On average, one person had 2.03 close friends. And just over 4% of them didn’t list any names.
【1】According to the study, how many close friends do most of us have?
A.25. B.2. C.3.
【2】The underlined word “unexpected” probably means “________” in the passage.
A.有趣 B.令人兴奋 C.意外
【3】About Facebook friends, which of the following is TRUE?
A.The Facebook user never meet some Facebook friends in real life.
B.The average user usually has 310 friends.
C.Facebook friends are all old and close friends.
【4】The passage shows the result of the survey by ________.
A.giving advice B.telling stories C.listing numbers
【5】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Many people are worrying about their circle of friends.
B.Researchers find many people have only two close friends.
C.Young people make as many friends as possible on the Internet.

阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项补全短文,选项中有一项为多余选项。
“I hate school, and I’m not going back!” Have you ever had that thought? Lots of kids have had. Usually this feeling doesn’t last long. But what happens if you feel this way too much?
Signs of school stress.
【1】 A kid who feels stressed out about school things might have headaches or stomachaches. Having trouble sleeping is also a sign of stress. And if you’re not getting enough sleep, you probably feel grouchy (脾气坏的) and tired during the day. Feeling tired can make your school day seem even worse.
【2】
If you don’t like school, the first step is finding out why. You may not like school because a bully (欺侮) is bothering you, or because a kid you don’t like wants to hang around with you. Or maybe you don’t get along with your teacher. Sometimes there are problems with your classes and schoolwork. 【3】
Finding help.
It’s a good idea to talk to someone about your problems at school. Your mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even classmates will be able to help you. It’s especially important to tell an adult if the problem is that you’re being bullied or someone hurts you physically. Try not to let the problems go on too long. It’s easier to catch up on one chapter than the whole book.
Feeling better about school.
The next time you find yourself disliking school, try this: First, write down everything you don’t like about school. 【4】 Even if it’s only a recess (课间休息) or a good lunch, that’s a start! Focus on what you can change and then you might be able to feel easy at school.
A.Then make a list of the good things you enjoy.
B.When you worry about school, it can have an influence(影响) on your body.
C.Finding out why.
D.Maybe the work is too hard, or you don’t feel as smart as the other kids.
E.Why do some kids dislike school?

“What is the meaning of life?” This is a question that we all ask ourselves at one point or another. It is a question that I have asked myself many times over the years. The best answer that I ever came across was written by the great psychologist(心理学家), Viktor Frankl. Frankl wrote that “The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
When I was a young boy I gave my life meaning by simply playing, running, jumping, swimming, laughing, and riding my bike. When I went to school I gave my life meaning by learning, studying hard, getting good grades and trying to make my mom and dad proud.
When I was a teenage boy I found meaning in playing sports, hanging out with my friends, and trying to impress (给……以深刻印象) girls.
In college I found my meaning by deciding what I wanted to study and what career(职业) I wanted to prepare for.
When I was working as a teacher I found meaning in helping to open young minds to new ideas and old wisdom.
When I married and had children I found meaning in protecting, providing for, and watching over those I loved.
As I got older, I began to realize that meaning isn’t something that comes and goes: We can give meaning to every moment of our lives here. We can bring meaning to the things we do. We can bring meaning to the hearts we touch.
All we have to do is love. It is love that gives life meaning. It is love that makes life worth(值得) living.

With the development of mobile phone apps, people have more chances to communicate with others in the world through sharing videos online. 1. 抖音是最受欢迎的 app 之一。
Many people think it is a doublet-sided sword(双刃剑) to use Douyin. 2. While some people get a lot of joy in using the app, others think it is not good to use it. Some people, especially the young, are easy to be lost in the app. 3. They spend hours recording (录制) and watching videos. 4. 这真是浪费时间 and harms their physical and mental health.
To deal with this problem, Douyin has developed an anti-addiction system (反上瘾系统). It has two new functions (功能) — a reminder(提示) that suddenly appears after 90 minutes of continuous use and a feature that locks the app by itself after daily use over two hours. I think it is a useful way to prevent addiction to the app. 5. Apps like Douyin may bring us joy, but we should use them properly.
