That black woman was a cleaner in our school and her job was to wipe down the lockers, clean the floor, and check the drawings on the wall. She never seemed to smile and was always yelling at kids for throwing trash on the ground.
One afternoon, I saw that two boys kicked over garbage cans, spilling garbage.
“What are you doing? Get back and clean this mess up!” the woman shouted.
The boys ran away, making faces to her.
She sighed sadly and began collecting the trash A few tears fell from her eyes. I went up to help her pick up piece of crumpled (皱巴巴) paper and smiled at her. The woman looked at me with shock, and for a moment I thought she would smile back, but she simply went to gather the trash. The next time when I saw her, I called out, “Good morning!” She stopped and looked at me. Then, she smiled back. It was a really beautiful smile.
We continued this relationship. We both smiled and waved as we met but we didn’t know each other, until one day when she asked me a question, “You are not from around here, are you?”
“Well, I’ve lived here all my life, if that’s what you mean,” I told her.
She was surprised. “Oh, I just thought you talk differently and you’re so friendly. I didn’t get that a lot...” she said.
After that day, we have become real friends. What this experience has taught me is that little gestures of kindness are often the most appreciated. By offering a simple smile and pleasant helle, I helped give this woman a better day and gained a valuable friendship.

When I was at school, read Gavin Maxwell’s book Ring of Bright Water. Affected by the story, I travelled to Sandaig and saw the house and one of the otters (水獭) with Andrew Scot (Gavin’s otter keeper). Later, I wrote to Gavin about my visit to his home and surroundings, and after the fire that destroyed Sandaig house he invited me to his new home in the remote countryside on Eilean Ban.
Gavin expressed the hope that I would take advantage of my interest in keeping a diary and write. On his death, I entered a competition for young writers about my experience of meeting Gavin, with story titled Bach to Paradise. Melvyn Bragg, the competition’s judge, spoke highly of my story, which he found to be “very moving” and added that he had enjoyed it “very much”.
Encouraged by Melvyn’s comments, I became a regular contributor to The Northumbrian Magazine, until I left the north-east of England in 1992 to live on the Lancashire-Yorkshire border. To emulate Gavin’s lifestyle, I chose to live in a remote farmhouse as what he did on the edge of the Bronte moors for over 20 years, with only wildlife for neighbors. During this time, I earned my living as countryside ranger (护林人) and helped the public to learn about the countryside through guided walks and events and by giving lectures.
Then I became a teacher, photographer and writer. Without Gavin, it is unlikely that I would have achieved the same success.
Thanks to the way of life I chose, my daughter, Mary, has recently gained her honorary degree in zoo management. She told me she had been inspired by my sparking (激发) her curiosity in the wildlife around our home.

C.Her respect for her strict father. D.Her love of Gavin Maxwell’s works.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Gavin Maxwell’s influence. B.Melvyn Bragg’s encouragement.

Bumblebees are in rapid decline (下降) across Europe and North America due to hotter and more frequent extremes in temperatures, scientists say. A study suggests the possibility of a bumblebee population surviving in any given place has declined by 30% within a single human generation.
Peter Soroye, a PhD student at the University of Ottawa and the study’s lead author, said, “We found that populations were disappearing in areas where the temperatures had gotten hotter. If declines continue at this pace, many of these species could disappear forever within a few decades.”
Dr. Tim Newbold, of London’s Centre for Biodiversity Environment Research, said, “We were surprised by how much climate change has already caused bumblebee declines. Our findings suggest that much larger declines are likely if climate change speeds up in the coming years, showing that we need great efforts to reduce climate change if we are to preserve bumblebee diversity.”
Bumblebees pollinate (授粉) plants such as cucumber, tomatoes and berries, and they are among the best pollinators we have in the wild life. Plants and crops that rely on pollination from bumblebees are likely to suffer if bumblebee population continues to drop, which could result in terrible results for the ecosystem.
Prof Jeremy Kerr, of the University of Ottawa and the study’s senior author, said, “It’s high time to prevent climate change worsening for bumblebees and others by keeping habitats (栖息地) that offer shelter, like trees, shrubs or slopes, that could let bumblebees get out of the heat.”
“Most importantly, we must deal with climate change itself and every effective action we take will help in the long run.”
【1】What leads bumblebee population to decrease?
A.Competition of various species. B.More and better habitats.
C.Increase of human populations. D.Hotter and extreme weather.
【2】How does Peter Soroye feel about the future of bumblebees?
A.Hopeful. B.Worried. C.Unconcerned. D.Positive.
【3】What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The shelters of bumblebees. B.The drop of bumblebees.
C.The importance of bumblebees. D.The change of climate.
【4】What is suggested to preserve bumblebees in the long term?
A.Reducing climate change. B.Keeping nature balance.
C.Decreasing other lives. D.Preserving bumblebees diversity.

In my opinions, it is useful for people to learn from the past. As result, knowledge can be kept and pass from generation to generation. It brought our life convenience because of people have grasped rich knowledge. At the same time, learning from the past helps us avoid make the same mistakes a second time. People have gone through wars and diseases again and again. Perhaps many of these similarly experiences can be prevented.
