Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product 【1】 breaks the next day. These kinds of experiences make you want to complain. However, if you speak angrily to people, they 【2】 (become) defensive. Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective way to get 【3】 you want is to stay calm. Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases such as, “I’m sorry to bother you, but ...” or “Excuse me, but could you ...?” For example, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. People like 【4】 (ask) rather than told! “Could you help me?.” I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it’s 【5】 (crack).
When 【6】 (try) to correct a problem, don’t blame the person you’re talking to. There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase, “I know this isn’t your fault, but ...” or “There has been a misunderstanding.” These phrases let people know you are only angry at the situation. Assigning blame isn’t as 【7】 (important) as getting a problem fixed!
There are honest mistakes, but at times someone 【8】 try to take advantage of you. In that case, don’t say “Hey! You’re trying to cheat me!” Instead use the phrase, “I understood that ...”For example, “I understood that the service charge 【9】 (include) in the price.” Then give the person a chance to answer.
【10】 you don’t get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or supervisor. But usually, you’ll find that polite words and smile will resolve a situation.

New Year’s Resolutions (决心)
It’s January 1, the day when many people around the world announce their New Year’s resolutions. In theory, a new year should be the time when people change their habits. In 【1】, it doesn’t work that way.
There are some advantages to choosing January 1 to start new habits. For one thing, it comes right after several holidays. And for many people, holidays are 【2】with food, often food that isn’t very healthy. After a month or so of lots of eating, people begin to realize that they need to 【3】. It’s no wonder that losing weight is one of the most 【4】resolutions every year!
While many people’s 【5】to change is real, most New Year’s resolutions don’t last all year, or even all month. One survey indicated that the average resolution only lasts three and a half weeks! For many, an honest resolution might be: “I will eat healthy food until I start longing for dessert, and then I’ll go back to eating 【6】.”
One common problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they aren’t specific enough. Maybe you 【7】to eat healthier or be friendlier. But if you don’t have a plan, how will you know if you’ve reached your goal? Generally, resolutions tend to fade (渐弱) out of your 【8】. They’ll
return again the next year when you start 【9】about resolutions again.
Resolutions often 【10】, but don’t be discouraged. If there’s something you want to change about your life, it won’t hurt to try. And if you fail now, don’t worry. Lunar New year is right around the corner!

The first Winter Olympics was held in France in 1924. Originally called “Winter Sports Week,” the game consisted of just 16 events, ranging from speed skating to ski jumping. Of the more than 250 people who took part in the games, only 11 were women. The latter only took part in the figure- skating competition.
The team from Norway, a northern country with a tradition of excellence in winter sports, won 17 medals, 10 of them in skiing events. Charles Jewtraw won America’s only gold medal in the 500- meter speed-skating competition.

This year’s Winter Olympic Games are taking place in PyeongChang, Republic of Korea. This is the second Olympics to be held in Korea. Athletes will take part in 15 sport disciplines and 102 events. These games will be the first Winter Games to award more than 100 gold medals. Six new events will be featured this year: snowboard big air (men and women), speed skating mass start (men and women), curling mixed doubles and an Alpine skiing team event.
Of the fixed events, Sports Illustrated magazine ranks snowboarding, figure skating and freestyle skiing as the most popular. Do Smartphones Make Us Smarter?
Should teachers allow cellphones in a classroom? Teachers worry that phones distract students during class, but phones can also be a research tool. The question is not just whether or not smartphones are useful in class. It’s also about negotiating a shift in education, where students use technology to participate in their own learning. Then again, even if phones can be used for assignments, students can be easily tempted into answering texts or checking social media instead.
A recent study on the way smartphones interfere with learning might help shed some light on the issue. In April 2017, researchers published findings showing how students were affected by their phones in the classroom. They explored the differences in student performance in four cases: open phone use allowed, phones allowed in the room but could not be used, no phones in the classroom and a non-instruction control group. After watching a 20-minute video, students took a short quiz. The result? Students in a room without any cellphones performed significantly better on the test. Scientists believe the way we attach ourselves to our phones could be the problem.
Have our phones controlled our minds?
It feels as if smartphones have been around forever. But the first iPhone only came out in 2007, just eleven years ago. In these eleven short years, phones have become a major part of our lives. They have become so entrenched (根深蒂固的) in society that many people are lost without them.
Technology developers such as Google would like us to use smartphones in all parts of daily lives. Through the ready access of information, the goal is to enlarge human intelligence. With mobile devices, we can use digital assistants like Siri to answer questions without even typing a word.
We are now in an age when many people can’t imagine life without a phone. There is even a name for the anxiety caused by not having one -nomophobia. This is the powerful feeling people get when they don’t have signal, their battery is about to die, or they are separated from their phone. This fear of missing out on important information or connections can have a controlling effect on our lives. And it can divide our attention from other important things, such as learning.
【1】Why do teachers worry about smartphones’ distracting students during class according to the passage?
A.Because smartphones can be used as a research tool.
B.Because students can use smartphones to discuss.
C.Because students can’t help doing something else in class.
D.Because smartphones can do assignments for students.
【2】What does the phrase shed light on in Para 2 most probably mean?

A.Smartphones have already become a part of our life.
B.Smartphones have already controlled our minds.
C.Typewriters will disappear due to smartphones.
D.People will become smarter thanks to smartphones.
【4】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.People can’t live normally without a phone nowadays.
B.Some diseases are actually connected with a phone.
C.A phone will control our life completely some day.
D.A phone is greatly distracting our attention from learning.

Flying into the future
Though the Pilot’s translation app is available now, the entire earpiece package is planned for delivery in May 2017 at a retail cost of US$250 to $300.【4】Additional language packages will be developed and sold soon after the product’s release so that people everywhere can make use of this amazing device.

B.The pilot can translate the information without any delay and pass it to the listener as quickly as possible.
C.The product proved to be a great success the first time it appeared in the market, which helped its backers realize their dreams.
D.The Pilot is joining other translators like Skype Translator and Google Translate, but it’s the first to add earpieces to the concept.
E.For now, Waverly Labs is still hard at work improving the Pilot’s speed of translation and developing an offline mode.
F.When the fundraising for the Pilot was launched on Indiegogo in May this year, it became apparent just how much the market wanted the product.

The Call of Croatia
There is truly something for everyone in the nation of Croatia in southeastern Europe. The Islands
Those who love the ocean and a slow pace will fall in love with Croatia. It boasts over 1,000 islands in the Adriatic Sea along its coast. Though the choices are endless, many desire to visit the island of Pag. It’s famous for its parties but also features a resort and a carnival. A bridge from the European continent makes it very easy to get to. Hvar is also a popular island with its fragrant fields of flowers and good weather. Some hotels offer discounts if it rains and free rooms if it snows!
The parks
Croatia is also home to eight national parks, including the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes. It’s noted for its 16 colorful lakes and a series of waterfalls. Paklenica National Park offers something completely different — a landscape that doubles fort the Old West. Its wild lands are perfect for both mountain hikes and nature walks.
The cities
The natural beauty of Croatia should not keep visitors from its urban centers, though. Dubrovnik has been called “the pearl of the Adriatic” with its Old Town, a World Heritage Site. Its city walls are from another time, yet its cable cars are a modern way to experience the area. The capital, Zagreb, has the most museums per square meter in the world. Visit St. Mark’s Church, the Museum of Arts and Crafts or one of its many cafes.
The festivals
Croatia is also surprisingly well-known for its music festivals. Return to the party island of Pag for Electro Dance Madness. In its second year, the event has attracted thousands onto its dance platform over the sea. Croatia’s biggest open-air festival is Zagreb’s INmusic, which has received top international praise. Tickets are very reasonable, and its Lake Jarun location offers outdoor activities as well.
Midnight parties, urban explorers and nature lovers will all be at home in Croatia.
