David was about 8 when he learned how to swim. He got so good that he eventually picked up free diving, a sport where divers hold their breath until resurfacing instead of using breathing equipment. He never imagined nearly two decades later he would come to use that skill in such a way.
It is an extraordinary act of courage, but to have the moment caught on camera for the world to see is something else entirely. The scene was filmed by someone on the same boat and was put online. The video was shared immediately by national and global media.
That August day began with David boating around with his friends. They spotted a woman driving a bright red Mazda heading right into high water. David and his crew tried to warn her to stop, but by then it was too late, and the car had already slid under water.
In the moments before David jumped into those muddy flood waters to tear the roof off the car with his bare hands, his thought process was short. In fact, he didn’t have one.
“The car was sinking fast,” David says. “There was no time to think. It had to be done.”
Up until recently, David hadn’t reunited with the woman he saved. He was perfectly fine with saving a stranger and remaining unknown to her.
Still to this day, even after the attention the video received, after the media from all over the globe landed on his front yard, David doesn’t think it a big deal. “I think I was just lucky,” David says, smiling. “I happened to be at the right place at the right time.”

A. Ambitious. B. Considerate. C. Modest. D. Conservative.

Stepinac has become one of the first high schools in the country to drop all textbooks and replace them with a “digital library”. When students started classes on Monday, they were zipping to an app on their tablets or laptops and bad instant access to all 40 texts in the Stepinac curriculum (课程).
Dennis Lauro, director of an information center which provides technical support to public schools in New York, said neither he nor his colleagues were aware of a similar digital effort in a public school setting. “This is the wave of the future.” Lauro said. “I’m not surprised that a private school would beat the public schools to it. They have the ability to just do it. There is so much politics involved in public schools, when it comes to a move like that, needing approval from boards and committees.”
For Tom Collins, Stepinac’s president, the commitment to digital source material was not so difficult a decision. In the past, students’ families had to spend up to $ 700 a year on textbooks. This year ? after the one-time purchase of a tablet or laptop ? families only need to pay $ 150. Using the digital library is almost as easy as opening a new book. A student can instantly lap into a digital book and open a map of Egypt or a speech by President John F. Kennedy. A teacher can show a page from a digital book on a whiteboard at the front of the class or send students a link to a particular math problem with notes added in.
The first few weeks may bring some challenges. Stepinac officials expect some parental discomfort over dropping concrete books. They recognize there may be technical faults at first. And they will have to encourage students to leave space-eating photos and music off their tablets ? and to keep their tablets charged.
【小题1】What is going on in Stepinac?
A. It’s building a new library.
B. It’s reforming its textbooks.
C. It’s updating its digital resources.
D. It’s changing its management pattern.
【小题2】By saying the underlined sentence. Lauro believes .
A. public schools face great challenges
B. private schools have their advantages
C. the effort is to cause instant changes
D. it’s a trend for schools to go digital
【小题3】Who may worry about the move in Stepinac?
A. Officials. B. Technicians. C. Parents. D. Teachers.

We love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine about living under the sea. But we’re terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine (海洋) environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taking back its own. And we suffer.
Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” ? the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.
We are expanding further into the marine environment. This practice docs harm lo marine ecosystems. We’re loving the sea to death, but we’ve not been thinking about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.
Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbours around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.
It’s a far cry from, he days when huge number, of old tyres were thrown, into the sea to build “artificial reef” (礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want 10 nm after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”
