I still read out loud to my son. He is in fifth grade and an avid reader. He plows through books and is currently devouring(津津有味地看)The Hobbit which he calls “addicting”. But he still likes it when I read out loud to him before bed.

I’ve always read to him, I could probably recite Goodnight Moon by heart and I like to think it has helped to instill his love of reading in him.

But as he’s gotten older, reading to him has changed. The books are longer, of course, and sometimes he corrects me if I misread a word in the dim light of his room. But what’s really changed is what we both get out of it.

When I was in fifth grade, I had a wonderful teacher, Mr. Hanks, who would read aloud to the class after lunch. I remember him reading Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and me hanging on every word. I could hardly wait for lunch to be over to find out what happened next to little Charlie Bucket.

Now I’m giving the same gift to my own son. Last week he brought me a copy of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol he found on the shelf and asked me to read it to him. One of the bonuses of reading to an older child is you can revisit a beloved book from your past or be exposed to a book you have never read yourself.

Such was the case with A Christmas Carol which I admit I had never read. So when I started reading I worried that it would be a tough go since the book uses expressions and the language Dickens used in the 1840’s. I found myself having to define things such as braziers and balustrades. But in the wonderful descriptiveness of Dickens’ prose, my son was especially taken with his description of Scrooge’s house where he had often played hide-and-seek with other friends.

24. When it comes to reading out loud to the author’s son, she feels _______.

   A. tired       B. curious       C. nervous       D. happy

25. It can be inferred from the text that _______.

   A. the author’s son enjoys her reading to him

   B. the author puts too much pressure on her son

   C. the author’s son dislikes reading on his own

   D. the author finds it unnecessary to read to her son

26. Compared with Goodnight Moon, A Christmas Carol _______.

   A. is much shorter

   B. is harder to understand

   C. is better known to the author

   D. is more popular with younger children

27. The author writes the text in order to _______.

   A. encourage children to read more books

   B. recommend some excellent books to readers

   C. persuade parents to read out loud to their children

   D. share her experience of reading out loud to her son

Long nights of winter can leave even the most positive people feeling cranky(古怪的). But for about 5% of Americans, it’s more serious: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that most occurs in the winter. Symptoms include loss of energy, eating more and difficulty concentrating.

The cause of SAD is unknown, but darker days probably play a role. Reduced levels of natural sunlight can disrupt your body’s internal clock, which can lead to depression. It also causes a drop in serotonin(血清素), a feel-good brain chemical. Severe cases may need antidepressant treatment. You can’t prevent the disorder from developing, but you can ease the symptoms.

Consider light therapy

Exposure to bright light that mimics(模仿)natural light is thought to affect mood-related brain chemicals and ease symptoms. It involves sitting in front of a special light box or wearing a cap-like lighted visor(盔甲)for about 30 minutes a day. Another therapy uses a “dawn simulator” that turns on early in the morning and gradually increases in brightness, allowing your body to wake up naturally. Light therapy can have minor side effects, such as eye strain and headaches, and it isn’t recommended for people with skin sensitivity.

Go outside

Yes, even if it’s cold and cloudy. Natural light is still good for you, and it can relieve your symptoms, especially if you head outdoors within two hours of waking up. At home, open the blinds and drapes to let in the light.

Eat right and exercise

Two health basics can help here, too: A well-balanced diet can improve energy levels, and regular physical activity works to boost your mood and ease stress and anxiety, which can aggravate SAD symptoms.

Spend time with friends

Make an effort to see people you enjoy, even when you’re down. Staying connected to your social circle and participating in your regular activities can offer great support during the winter months.

28. Which of the following about SAD is NOT true?

A. It most occurs in the winter.

B. It may result in the absence of concentration.

C. What causes it remains to be discovered.

D. It results from too much exposure to the sun.

29. What can we learn from the passage?

   A. Social activities can ease the symptoms of SAD.

   B. A healthy diet is the best way to fight SAD.

   C. SAD may make one lose his appetite.

   D. SAD will not result in loss of energy.

30. What does the underlined word “aggravate” mean in the passage?

   A. To get rid of something.

   B. To make something better.

   C. To make something worse.

   D. To get something changed.

31. What can be the best title for the passage?

   A. A major medical discovery

   B. Beat the winter blues

   C. Common winter health problems

   D. What is seasonal affective disorder?

Scientists are trying to copy the process of photosynthesis(光合作用)by making a “man-made leaf” to produce clean power.

Through photosynthesis plants use sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide into sugar. It is the most effective use of solar energy on the earth. All the power needed in a year could be met by the energy contained in the sunlight hitting the earth in one hour.

Researchers at Imperial College in London have begun a 1 million study of the so-called “man-made leaf”, hoping to produce a system that can produce clean energy the way leaves do, The Guardian reports. It could be used in fuel cells to make electricity and to power clean vehicles without harming the environment.

Scientists forecast that if man-made photosynthesis systems could use 10 percent of the sunlight falling on them they would only need to cover 0.16 percent of the earth’s surface to satisfy global energy needs.

James Barber, a biologist at the college and leader of the project, tells The Guardian, “If a leaf can do it, we can do it even better. It doesn’t mean that you try to imitate the leaf exactly. The key lies in the basic principle of how it works. Leonardo da Vinci tried to design flying machines with feathers, but in the end we’ve built planes like 747s and Airbus 380s, completely different from birds, and in many ways better.”

“The challenge is to get hydrogen(氢气)out of water using a ready supply of energy,” Barber adds. Scientists can already produce hydrogen by breaking down water, but the process is quite expensive. John Loughhead, executive director of the UK Energy Research Centre, tells The Guardian, “ We know that, since plants have already evolved to do it, it’s fundamentally(基本上) a workable process on a large scale. In the long run, the only sustainable(可持续的)form of energy we’ve got is the sun. What makes this look really interesting is that we’re starting from a base we know is workable.

32. If scientists succeed, what will the “man-made leaf” provide?

   A. Sugar.               B. Water and carbon dioxide.

   C. Clean power.          D. Electricity.

33. Why is Leonardo da Vinci mentioned in Paragraph 5?

   A. He tried to design flying machines with feathers, similar to what researchers developing the man-made leaf have in mind.

   B. Real planes are completely different from the ones he imagined, just as the “man-made leaf” will be different from a real one.

   C. It was his invention that inspired the scientists to design the “man-made leaf”.

   D. Planes are better than the machines he designed, so the “man-made leaf” will be better than a real one.

34. What will be a breakthrough for the “man-made leaf” project?

   A. How to get hydrogen out of water cheaply.

   B. How to copy the process of photosynthesis.

   C. How to get enough sunlight and hydrogen.

   D. How to get enough funds to support the research.

35. What is the researchers’ attitude toward this project?

   A. Positive.      B       . Negative.       C. Objective.       D. Passive.

The new term is coming up, and we have all promised ourselves to be much better students this time. We all know that whenever summer ends, though, we automatically get as stressed as before, but this can be prevented, or at least reduced. And here’s how:

1. Think positively

36   They will snowball into even worse thoughts. If you are doing well in some classes and poorly in others, don’t criticize yourself and convince yourself that you’ll never be able to improve--- this will prove itself true, and you’ll lose all the success you have gained so far.

2. Prioritize(划分优先顺序)

37   Figure out what’s most important and work your way down from there, or vice versa. Don’t forget to schedule in time for yourself to keep your mind awake and active. And if you have to schedule in sleep, do it! Don’t try to do a million things at once--- think about what’s important and urgent, and do those things first.

3.   38

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re only human. Everyone needs help once in a while, and you can eliminate a lot of stress just by asking for help when you need it!   39   When the going gets tough, turn to a friend for help. It’s likely that they need you just as much as you need them, and you will be much more successful together.

4. Reward yourself

When you’re drowning in work and can’t see the end, it is hard to think about doing anything other than those assignments.   40   Rewarding yourself for all your difficult work is the best way to continue your winning streak. Take yourself out to a nice dinner or see a movie--- just take a “me” day and thank yourself for all your efforts!

A. Plan ahead

B. Ask for help

C. But that’s where you’re wrong.

D. Without prioritization, your entire world can come crashing down.

E. There is absolutely nothing worse than negative thoughts.

F. You’re only one person--- you can’t do everything on your own.

G. Get to know what is personally necessary for your body and mind.
