A group of swans(天鹅) flew down to a beach where a crow(乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain(鄙视). “You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!” One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks(特技), and then came down and looked proudly at the swan. Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments(评价) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle(挣扎) to keep himself from falling into the water. Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves. Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫),but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colors is protecting themselves. bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colors much like the tree. Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. Can you speak to dolphins(海豚)? 46 We interviewed a biologist and asked her what research on dolphin communication has shown. This is what she told us. Just like dogs, cats and other mammals, dolphins communicate by using sound, vision (视觉), touch and taste. 47 Dolphins don’t have the ability to smell, but their hearing and eyesight are excellent. We also asked Jane if dolphins have got their own language. She told us that they have and that dolphins started talking to each other from birth. 48 Sometimes they even sound like a heavy metal band! We then asked Jane if any interesting experiments have been done. She told us that a very interesting experiment had been done with a mother dolphin and her two-year-old baby in an aquarium(水族馆). 49 The two dolphins were in separate tanks(贮水池)which were connected by a special under water system. Unfortunately the biologists couldn’t understand what the dolphins were talking about because they haven’t been able to decode (转换) dolphin language yet. However, it was very clear that the dolphins knew what they were talking about. 50 She told us that she and her team have been listening to dolphins for more than 17 years, using special equipment to record and analyze their language. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to decode it yet, but who knows — maybe one day we’ll get a phone call from a dolphin.
