A mother and daughter have made their wedding days special—by having a joint ceremony(联合婚礼).

Kim Milhano, 28, and Susan Scott-Williams, 51, got married together. The two are often mistaken for sisters. They combined their weddings at a hotel near their homes in Bristol. Mother-of-two Kim said, “Sharing my big day with another bride(新娘) could make it feel embarrassing(令人尴尬的). But it actually brought us double the joy.”

After walking up two ways in a V-shape, the brides met their husbands for their ceremonies, which were followed by a huge party for 180 people. And because they had one large wedding instead of two, the family managed to save a quarter of the cost of the 8,000 event.

Kim said, “When my husband Carlos rang me and said ‘I think you need to sit down’, I was worried that one of the kids was hurt. So it was a bit of a relief(放松) when he said he wanted to have a double wedding with my mum and her husband Barry. Up until then day-to-day life had taken over and we’d never had time or the money to plan a wedding.” “Mum and Barry were happy for us to do things completely in our way but I didn’t want to take over. So we planned everything together—it’s what our whole family is like. We spent months planning the big day together. Thankfully we never had different opinions!”

The world’s most popular type of banana is facing a major health crisis. According to a new study, a disease caused by a powerful fongus(真菌)is killing the Cavendish banana, which accounts for 99% of the banana market around the globe. The disease, called Tropical Race 4(TR4),has affected banana crops in southeast Asia for decades. In recent years, it has spread to the Middle East and the African nation of Mozambique. Now experts fear the disease will show up in Latin America, where the majority of the world’s bananas are grown.

Once a banana plant is infected with TR4, it can’t get water and nutrients. TR4 lives in soil, and can easily end up on a person’s boots. If the contaminated(污染)boots are then worn on a field where Cavendish bananas are grown, the disease could be transferred. “Once a field has been contaminated with the disease, you can’t grow Cavendish bananas there anymore.” scientist Randy Ploetz says.

Cavendish bananas are produced in mass quantities and are popular among consumers. But once one banana plant gets infected(感染)it just runs like wildfire through that entire plantation. One solution to solve the problem, Ploetz says, is to try to develop new bananas that can resist TR4. “It really needs to be done, but we don’t have it yet.” He notes that we still have time before we need to worry about the Cavendish banana disappearing.

24. The disease, called TR4 has affected banana crops in the following areas EXCEPT     .

   A.Mozambique            B. Latin America

C.the Middle East  D. southeast Asia

25. If a banana plant is infected with TR4, the banana plant will probably die of________

   A. cold       B. poison      C.heat     D.thirst

26. We can infer that the disease called TR4 can__________ .

   A.damage a person’s boots.

   B.be cured easily with chemicals.

   C. last for a long time in the soil.

   D.be prevented from spreading.

27 .What is the ideal way to solve the problem?

   A. To promote the sales of bananas.

   B. To throw away the infected bananas.

   C. To develop a new variety of the bananas resisting TR4.

   D. To bury the infected bananas in the soil.

Scientists in Britain have managed to teach bumblebees (大黄蜂)to pull strings to get to food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their colony (群体)---showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains.

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes ()and birdsshowed for the first time that some insects are up to the taskand can also pass skills on through several generations.

The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread” ----the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills ---may not be exclusive to humans.

In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet.

The strings were attached to discs — or artificial “flowers” --- containing food at their center but placed under a transparent screen. The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.

From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful.

Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finallytrained bees were put in colonies, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the colony’s worker bees.

Lars Chittka,, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees’ learning and teaching skills.

32. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

   A.ordinary.            B. unique.       C. beneficial.   D. widespread.

33. What did the researchers find about bees?

   A.Bees learn best in insects.

B.Bees are as clever as birds.

   C.Bees are born good learners.

D.Bees can be trained to learn skills.

34. What may the research team focus on next?

   A. What else bees can do.         B. Where bees learn skills.

C.How bees teach others.          D. How bees’ brain work.

35. What may be the best title for the text?

   A. Small bees, great abilities              B. Bees can learn and teach

   C. Bees are smarter                D. Let bees learn

                               Different cultures

The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot.___36___

The origin of the Eastern cultures is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Indus River in India._____37___

When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization(文明) later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.____38____ Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't distinguish from the European culture a lot.

_____39___ Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic(象形文字) language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race difference counts as well. But what's more, due to the far distance and the steep, areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference(干扰)  from the other.

These differences are everywhere. ____40____ But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colourful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.

ALet us work together to keep a variety of culture.

BOne important thing is to learn about other cultures.

CAnd these two are well known as the base of the European culture.

DAt the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences.

EThis is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.

FThey helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.

GThey are obvious and affect people's ways of thinking and their views of the world.

I just come back from Britain last week. I was luckily enough to be one of the student from different countries to visit the UK from Feb.16 to 28. We paid a visit to many places, like London, Oxford or the Lake District. I learned much about British culture and history in London, which was my most favorite. I also liked Oxford, which I saw much more old buildings. The Lake District was beautiful, but it was pity that it rained heavily when they were there. The most excited thing for me in Britain was that I made a lot of friends there.
