This year’s winners of the Wenjin Book Award, announced by the National Library of China on April 23, are from three main categories — children’s books, popular science and social science titles. The annual awards announced on World Book Day are meant to build a bridge between readers, writers and publishers to create a conductive feeling for reading books and fulfill the duty of libraries to promote culture and educate the people. Started in 2004 and first celebrated in 2005, the award’s group of judges is drawn from a pool of great scholars and journalists. Zhang He, a senior culture reporter from the People’s Daily, says the awards are considered the most honorable in China’s book world because it fully focuses on the quality of the books. The judging group also makes dozens of book recommendations for the public. From 2005 to 2014, with a break in 2012, judging groups selected 99 books and recommended some 421 others from a pool of 6,000 titles. Critics (评论员) praised the winning books, especially Zhongguo Gudai Wuzi Wenhua, or Tangible Culture in Ancient China, published by the Zhonghua Book Company in July 2014. The bottle gourd (葫芦) is an annual plant that is a member of the same family as melons. It is home to Africa and is believed to be one of the first plants grown by humans, thousands of years ago. Although it was occasionally used as a source of food or medicine, the bottle gourd was most valued for its hard-shelled dried fruit. Multi-functional bottle gourds were used by ancient people all around the world as floats for nets, containers for water and even as musical instruments. What botanists (植物学家) are unsure of, however, is exactly how the bottle gourds was at first transported from Africa to Asia and the New World. The most usual theory is that bottle gourds simply drifted across the ocean, perhaps as an indirect result of African farmers transporting their crops by river. Bottle gourds are extremely able to float, so if any were to fall overboard during these trips, they were likely to be carried by the river to the open sea, where they would be swept away by ocean waves. Modern researchers have proven that the bottle gourd is able to stand such a journey, able to float in the ocean for hundreds of days and still carrying seeds from which new gourds can be grown. There are others who believe that the bottle gourd was brought to the New World by African fishermen. The basis of this argument is that any naturally moving bottle gourds would have been washed up on New World beaches, an environment in which they do not naturally grow and then could not survive in. Therefore, humans had to have played a part in their appearance in the New World. Most botanists, however, argue against this theory. They believe those bottle gourds that floated across the ocean may have been carried inland by strong waves or hurricanes to more suitable ecological sites. 29. Why does the writer mention hard-shelled dried fruit? A. To provide evidence that bottle gourds were planted. B. To identify various values of bottle gourds. C. To show how bottle gourds were used as medicine. D. To explain why bottle gourds received so much attention from scientists. 30. Bottle gourds are used in the following ways except ________. A. food B. medicine C. containers D. transport 31. The movement of the bottle gourds is explained by ________. A. contrasting arguments put forward for natural and human movements B. identifying the most common reason for their appearance C. listing evidence that supports natural and human movements D. explaining how sea life played a part in the process

Australia has opened its first country music academy (学院) within a Queensland high school in an attempt to improve the credibility (可信性) of this style among young people. Teacher Geoff Walden said he believed the center at Gympie State High School was the first of its kind in the world. Country music is the second biggest-selling style of music in Australia. Mr. Walton said country music was more popular than rock and pop in many parts of Australia because of the “frontier mentality” of outback inhabitants (内地居民), similar to that which produced the US country music scene. But he admitted some school pupils did not take the style seriously. They didn’t realize there are many different styles within the style. Classes will teach young people the basics of song-writing, video production, marketing and management along with their usual curriculum (课程) studies. Mr. Walden hopes to develop the plan with the help of the Australian Institute of Country Music so that the students will be able to take a degree in country music at the local university. The Country Music Association of Australia already runs short intensive (集中的) courses to help young up-and-coming (很有前途的) musicians progress in their music careers. All languages change over time, but some change at a faster rate than others. 36 The most important factors are the number of people who speak a language, where they live and whether they move around, the importance of the language for world trade and communication, and changes in technology. 37 However, today English is the most widely used language in the world. English is spoken by about 350 million people as a first language in countries such as Great Britain, the United States. In addition, about a billion more people speak English as a second language. English started to take over French as an international language during the period of British colonialism (殖民主义) when the English ruled many countries in Africa and Asia. 38 The colonial period came to an end at the same time that several other changes occurred. For example, the U.S. started to play a greater part in global affairs and the international economy. New means of communication technology such as television and the Internet spread English worldwide. 39 In addition, they could use the Internet for information, business, or e-mail communication, all in English. Just as the use of English spread, other languages changed English by contact or by new inventions and technology. In contrast, Icelandic is a language that has changed very slowly. Icelandic speakers today can understand poetry written in a slightly different dialect over 1,000 years ago! Why has Icelandic changed so slowly? The main reason is the isolated (孤立的) location of the island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. 40 Compared to England, Iceland had no history of colonialism. Iceland’s small population has not played a major role in international trade or communication. Today, most Icelanders speak English in addition to their native language. With outside influences, Icelandic is changing more rapidly now. A. People everywhere could watch the news or sports events in English. B. These changes have a great influence on the development of society. C. Isolation meant that for hundreds of years, Icelanders had little contact with speakers of other languages. D. What are some of the factors that influence how quickly a language changes? E. The language communication brings about the communication of technology. F. In the past, other languages such as Latin or French were more important than English. G. English was the primary means of communication in these colonies.
