Every day, hundreds of thousands of us visit coffee shops. While we drink our coffee, we may connect our smartphone to the shop’s Wi-Fi network, and keep in touch with friends via services such as Facebook.

As well as socializing, we may use the time and free access to a wireless connection to get on top of our finances. Transferring money from your account to others’ accounts is nothing more than a few taps on your screen.

But what coffee drinkers do not realize is that lurking(潜伏) among their fellow coffee-lovers are bank robbers.

Unbeknown to you, this modern form of bank robber is silently collecting all your private data. The only sign of his thievery is perhaps a little smile as your bank log-in details appear on his screen.

You’ll only realize when you later go to a cash machine to withdraw(提取)some money, and discover that every penny in your account has been cleared out.

The common method for thieves is to use your smartphone’s Wi-Fi connection. They rely on the fact that most of us are not careful about the security of networks we connect to.

For example, when you are in a coffee shop, your smartphone will present you with a list of available Wi-Fi networks that you can use to connect your phone to the Internet. Most of these networks are run by legitimate(合法的)companies, but sometimes they are actually created by a thief sitting nearby with little more than a laptop.

These networks are often given names, such as “Free Public Wi-Fi”, which deceive smartphone users into logging in. On the surface, everything seems normal, and you will be able to connect just as you are with a legitimate Wi-Fi service.

However, because you have connected to a network controlled by a thief, he can monitor everything you do, enabling him to collect passwords and log-in details about your bank account.

Every morning, on the way to school, I see the same people I always see: the old lady walking the dog, the man at the newsstand(报亭), the skipping twins on their way to the bus stop. I don’t know any of their names. In a strange way, I consider them as my friends. Every day, I smile at them, and they smile at me. At school, I like all the subjects. I have friends I have known as long as I can remember. It’s as comfortable as being at home.

Today at breakfast my parents announce that we’re going to move because my father has gotten a promotion. On my way to school I look at everything as if seeing it for the first time. The old lady waves at me; her dog wags its tail and gives a tiny bark. The man at the newsstand greet me. The skipping twins run past me to the bus stop. I feel like a different person, a stranger. For the first time ever, my school day is not comfortable. Going home from this day is a relief.

Every day, my parents tell me something about the town that will become our new home. There is a statue honoring heroes, an annual strawberry festival and the mayor used to be a pro-football player. There are oak trees in our new neighborhood, just like the one in our yard.

On the day before we move, I walk in the same direction as I would if I were going to school. When I see the old lady, I tell her good-by. The man at the newsstand shakes my hand, too. The twins wave as they board the bus. I walk home slowly. The movers are carrying boxes while my parents are loading suitcases into our car. Soon our house will be empty. But not for long; I know that somewhere there are parents telling their children about a town filled with oak trees, a place where you can get the best milkshake in the world, if you’re lucky, you might see the same people every day of your life.

As the population of the planet increases, so does the amount of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these buildings use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets safe. The problem is that researchers are finding that all this light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.

Less than 10 years ago I drove to a less populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attractive meteor shower(流行雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I did that today, I wouldn’t be able to see the meteor shower as well, due to the increase in street lights, and I would surely be run over by a car.

Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you’ve ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see is wasted electricity.

One of the saddest parts of light pollution is that most of it is unnecessary and most of the outdoor light that we use is wasted. One only needs to look at a row of street lights to see how much of the light shines upwards and lights the sky; a total waste of electricity.

Additionally, somewhere this electricity needs to be generated, and the generation of that electricity creates pollution by giving off greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.

Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lit buildings, as they become disoriented(分不清方向) by the light. It has been long known that tiny sea turtle hatchlings(刚孵化的小海龟)become disorientated and follow lights on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.

Fortunately, light pollution is one of the sources of pollution that can be most easily corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.

29.For what purpose is Paragraph 2 written?

A.To describe the past beauty of the town.      B.To show the advantages of a small population.

C.To study the changes of the town.                D.To prove the negative effect of light pollution.

30.Which of the following is the effect of light pollution?

A.The air we breathe may be polluted.            B.It is much easier for us to watch meteor showers.

C.Many animal species have died out.            D.More traffic accidents happen every day.

31.What can be inferred from the text?

A.We are almost at a loss how to deal with light pollution.

B.Some animals use natural light to direct themselves.

C.Global warming results in light pollution in some ways.

D.Astronauts can seldom see clearly in space nowadays.

32.What will the writer discuss after the last paragraph?

A.Websites on light pollution.                           B.Sources of light pollution.

\     C.Ways of reducing light pollution.                   D.More bad effects of light pollution.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Gorge Osborne said yesterday he would use the autumn spending review to increase Britain’s 12bn-a-year aid budget towards humanitarian (人道主义的)causes in the wake of the European refugee(难民)crisis.

Britain promised to spend 0.7 percent of state general product on aid, meaning the budget could rise sharply by the end of the decade as the economy grows.

Mr Osborne also said more of the aid budget could be given to help local government with housing costs for incomers, without breaking international guidelines.

“We will use the foreign aid budget to help with the costs of these refugees. People ask about the pressure on public services; we’ll have extra money to help with that.”

The government was unable to give a figure for how much aid money could be handed to local authorities; it would depend on how many refugees are accepted.

David Cameron, Prime Minister, will set out his position on aid for refugees today. It is reported that Britain will accept at least 10,000 extra people from camps on the Syria border. He will use a statement in the House of Commons to flesh out plans—announced in Madrid on Friday—to take more people.

A report in The Sunday Times that the UK would take 15 000 Syrians, not far from the 18 000 figure demanded by the EU, was described by “ Downing Street” as a “guess”.

The UK will offer to resettle Syrians directly from refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey—but not those who have already reached the EU.

33.What is the main idea of the passage?

D.Refugees like to live in Britain.

A.Britain will use foreign money to help refugees.

B.Britain helps refugees following international guidelines.

C.Britain will use foreign money to develop themselves.

D.People ask to use public service money to help refugees.

35.What can we know from the passage?

A.Britain can hold 10 000 refugees at most.

B.The number of refugees to be received is uncertain.

C.House of Commons declare a general plan.

D.Britain can hold 15 000 refugees at most.

How to Find Yourself

Do you often feel lost? Do you think you are living somebody else’s life? If yes, discover ways to find yourself by going through the following article.

         36

If you are thinking , “how to find yourself when you are lost?”, then the first thing to do is to have a rest from everything—work, personal life and all worldly things. Give time to yourself to think why you seem lost. Is it because of over work? Is it because you are not leading a life that you want to? Or is it because you are not satisfied with the people or things around you? Try to find answers to these questions to determine the cause behind your restlessness.

         37

For once, instead of being the way others want you to be, be yourself. Look within and find yourself in you. Think about the things that you would want to do if you didn’t have any family obligations or any money issues. If you really want to know how to find inner peace, then think, what you would want others to describe you as—an honest person? Or adventurous? Or loving?, or realistic?  38

       Reflect on yourself

Thinking deeply about the past, the time or situations when you were the happiest, is another way to find yourself.  39    This will help you to identify things that you want to do in life and that make you happy and also certain people whose company you enjoy.

       Maintain a diary

Knowing yourself and determining what you want to do with your life, will not come to you in a day or two. Discovering oneself is an ongoing process and it can take months or sometimes even years to truly find yourself. So, it’s important that you keep a written record of all your feelings and thoughts.  40    And then you may find yourself.

A.      Accept yourself

B.      Focus on yourself

C.     Give yourself a break

D.     Pour all your emotions and feelings about life in it.

E.      Think what you were doing or when you were the happiest.

F.      It is very important for you to truly find yourself before it is too late.

G.     Once you look within, you will know the answer and then try to be exactly that.

Just when I thought I had got used   68   English money, I saw the following advertisement in a local newspaper : “Wanted: Sales Clerk, London Area, 25k”. I was totally   69   (confuse). The advertisement was not for a 25-kilobyte clerk, but for a clerk who would earn 25,000 a year.

Skiing is the sport I like best. I live in a small village in the mountains which there is a lot of snows and I

can ski every day. Skiing is a great fun for people who enjoy being outdoors. Speeding down the mountains

makes you feel as a bird. And another good thing about skiing is that it help you relax. Being out in the fresh

air makes you forget your problems. However, learn to ski can sometimes be dangerously as you might hurt

yourself. Sometimes it is also difficult and tired because you need many time to practice. To sum up, although

skiing can sometimes be difficult, I think it’s excellent way to exercise.
