                A great loss--Shirley Temple dies at 85

February 12, 2014

BY DERRIK J. LANG, Associated Press

Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10th at age 85, wasn’t just a child star. She was THE child star — the sweet little girl whose shining smile helped illumine some of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression.

It’s hard today to imagine the super star Shirley was once “America’s Little Darling”. She sang and danced her way to the top of the box office in such films as Bright Eyes, Curly Top and Heidi. By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films. Temple teamed with Bill Robison in four movies, and their dance on the stairs in The Little Colon is still a legendary film moment.

In the 1930s, her name on a movie introduction assured a packed house. She inspired dolls, dresses, dishes — even a drink (alcohol-free, of course).

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right.”

Unlike so many of today’s child stars, Temple didn’t end up with her name appearing across the headlines for bad behaviors. Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career (生涯) in diplomacy (外交), including presidential appointments as ambassador to Ghana.

She surprised a lot of people who doubted her with her grace, knowledge and eagerness to serve. In fact, her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19 years). The role she valued most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little dynamic figure to continue charming audiences for a very long time.

B. A newspaper.

C. A magazine.

D. A poster.

23. 详细信息

I once had my Chinese MBA students brainstorming on “two-hour business plans”. I separated them into six groups and gave them an example: a restaurant chain (连锁店). The more original their idea, the better, I said. Finally, five of the six groups presented plans for restaurant chains. The sixth proposed a catering (餐饮) service. Though I admitted the time limit had been difficult, I expressed my disappointment.

My students were middle managers, financial analysts and financiers from state-owned enterprises and global companies. They were not without talent or opinions, but they had been shaped by an educational system (体制) that rarely stressed or rewarded critical thinking or inventiveness. The scene I just described came in different forms during my two years’ teaching at the school. Papers were often copied from the Web and the Harvard Business Review. Case study debates were written up and just memorized. Students often said that copying was a superior business strategy (策略), better than inventing and creating.

In China, every product you can imagine has been made and sold. But so few well-developed marketing and management minds have been raised that it will be a long time before most people in the world can name a Chinese brand (品牌).

With this problem in mind, partnerships with institutions like Yale and MIT have been established. And then there’s the “thousand-talent scheme”: this new government program is designed to improve technological modernization by attracting top foreign-trained scientists to the mainland with big money. But there are worries about China’s research environment. It’s hardly known for producing independent thinking and openness, and even big salary offers may not be attractive enough to overcome (克服) this.

At last, for China, becoming a major world creator is not just about setting up partnerships with top Western universities. Nor is it about gathering a group of well-educated people and telling them to think creatively. It’s about establishing a rich learning environment for young minds. It’s not that simple.

54. Why does the author feel disappointed at his students?

A. Because there was one group presenting a catering service.

B. Because the six groups made plans for restaurant chains.

C. Because all the students copied a case for the difficult topic.

D. Because the students’ ideas were short of creativeness.

55. Theunderlined word “scheme” in the fourth paragraph means        .

A. period

B. topic

C. project

D. timetable

56. We can infer from the passage that        .

A. high pay may not solve the problem of China’s research environment

B. the new government program aims at encouraging imagination

C. cooperation with institutions has been set up to make a Chinese brand

D. China can make and sell any product all over the world

57. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Reward Creative Thinking

B. How to Become a Creator

C. Establish a technical Environment

D. Look for a New Way of Learning

Do you drink water that's been left sitting out overnight or even for another day? Have you noticed it tastes different?

Tap water that has been left to sit out slowly begins to acquire (获得) off  taste. Many people think that this is because of microorganisms. But that’s not what makes old water taste not fresh. For that we can thank carbon dioxide. After about 12 hours, tap water starts to go flat as carbon dioxide in the air starts to mix with the water in the glass, lowering its pH and giving it an off taste. But it’s most likely safe to drink.

However, back to those microorganisms. If you use a dirty glass day after day, there is more of a chance of bacteria making themselves known; a risk that increases if you share the glass with another mouth as well. But assuming (假设) you use a fresh glass every few days, you probably won’t have a problem unless the glass has been touched by dirty fingers, and especially if those dirty fingers went unwashed after using the bathroom.

As for plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car, step away from the bottle, warns Dr. Kellogg Schwab, director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute. “A chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA, along with other things used to make plastic can leach (过滤) into your water if the bottle heats up or sits in the sun,” he explains. BPA, as you probably know, has been linked to everything from heart disease to cancer. Schwab also adds that plastic used for commercial bottled water isn’t meant to be washed or refilled, so use only one time and recycle. Or don’t buy them at all; use refillable water bottles instead.

58. Tap water begins to acquire off taste because of         .

A. BPA

B. carbon dioxide

C. the glass

D. the microorganism

59. According to Paragraph 2, tap water that’s been left sitting out for 12 hours         .

A. is still safe to drink

B. tastes better

C. contains few microorganisms

D. is most likely undrinkable

60. What should we do with plastic water bottles that have been left out in the sun or in the car?

   A. Throw them away.

B. Clean them and use them again.

C. Use them after they cool down.

D. Refill them with fresh water.

61. Which of the following is true about BPA?

   A. It is safe for people to use.

B. It is a kind of new material.

C. It can cause great harm to people.

D. It is the main material to make plastic.

In October 2013, Davion Only made an appeal (请求) on the Internet. He had learned that his biological mother had died not long before. “My name is Davion and I’ve been in foster care (寄养照管) since I was born,” he said, “but I’m not giving up hope.”

The heartbreaking appeal spread quickly, and Only’s foster agency received calls from more than 10,000 people. Only ended up travelling to Ohio to live with a family. But after Only got into a physical fight with one of his elder would-be brothers, the family changed their minds.

Back in Florida, Only passed through four different temporary homes over the following year, until he called Connie Going, his adoption case worker, to make a special request. Only had known Going for nearly ten years, and had asked every year if she would adopt him, but she always hesitated. “I always believed there was a better family than us out there,” Going said in an interview. But last July, when Only called and asked again if she might adopt him, Going said something felt different. “When he asked me, my heart felt this ache and I just knew he was my son,” she said.

So Going, 52, invited Only to start spending time with the rest of her family — her two daughters, Sydney, 21, and Carly, 17, and a son, Taylor, 14, who she also adopted out of foster care. Eventually, after seeing how well the arrangement was working, Going, who had rented a bigger home, started adopting Only. Only moved in with her family last December. He officially joined Going’s family on April 22, 2015 when the adoption papers went through.

“Today, I feel blessed and honored to have been chosen to be the parent of all my children,” Going said.

Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list.

66    Fear can also keep us from pursuing (追赶) the things in life that really matter -- like following our dreams, and developing important relationships. I have some ideas, though, of how to be free from fear.

l        Experience fear.

I used to be very afraid of speaking in front of people. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so tied up that I wouldn’t be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it wasn’t that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I make them out in my mind.    67

l        Create space.

The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn’t reached by ignoring the fear, or trying to talk ourselves out of it.    68    In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse (颠倒) the “fight or flight (逃避)” response in the body.

l           69

Once we admit the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breathing so that it becomes slower and gentler. We try to make the breath just a little bit longer, and feel how fear appears in the body. As we pay attention to the physical symptoms (征兆) of fear, we can see fear objectively.

With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that we’re able to replace a fearful thought with a positive one.

70    For example, before I get up to speak in front of a group of people, I imagine that the audience is positively impressed by what I say and that I manage to complete the speech successfully.

A.     Space is created only when we can honestly admit that fear exists.

B.     We can imagine a positive result for whatever we’re about to do.

C.     Fear, if left uncontrolled, can even destroy our life.

D.     So one way to get rid of (排除) fear is to simply push ourselves to do things that we fear.

E.      When we can see a positive result in our mind, fear no longer stops us.

F.      But fear is more than just physically unpleasant.

G.     Control the breath and feel the fear.
