It was my birthday last Thursday. I decided to          it by inviting a few friends out to supper. I chose a restaurant in a           part of town. It is one of my favorite restaurants because the food is good and the waiters are friendly. The waiter then pointed to a table in the corner. "The people there are about to        "he said, "Just            and you'll find a place there." He was right. Fifteen minutes later,he people at the corner table paid their          , got up and left. I led my friends            and we all sat down.

Unluckily our table was almost out of        . We tried to call the attention of the waiter         sent us there, but he, like all the other waiters, was            with the party of tourism. They ordered lots of food. At last, an hour later, the tourists were leaving and looking very        with life. The waiter now very tired, appeared at our table. I           my friends about the best dishes and finally the waiter went off with our order.

A few moments later he returned to our table. We could tell from his face that he had           for us. Looking a little         , he told us that there was no meat           fish  left. "All we can offer you" he said, "is an omelet(煎蛋卷) !"

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses (感觉) how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track(跟踪) your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless (无线的) connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications (设备)on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart and fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, and the U.S. is the first target market. ( 目标市场)

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient's face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?

This Christmas was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.

I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-coloured flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the prefer picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper colouring with words that shaded my childhood, I felt that this was a gift that shaped my childhood; I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.

Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.

After an absence of thirty years, I decided to visit my old school againI had expected to find changes, but not a completely different buildingAs I walked up the school drive, I wondered for a moment if I had come to the right addressThe dirty red brick houses had been swept awayIn its place stood a bright, modern blockA huge expanse of glass extended (延展) across the face of the building, and in front, there was a well-kept lawn (草坪) where previously there had been “an untidy gravel (沙石) yard”.

For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jetsand even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they arguethe elevator’s role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk? the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地)and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的)columns.

If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience^one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage.

In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it” Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.

Todayas the world’s urban population explodesand cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry”are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.

32What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. The general view of elevators.

B. The particular interests of experts.

C. The desire for a remarkable machine.

D. The enthusiasm for transport vehicles.

A. Vertical direction.

B. Lack of excitement.

C.Little physical space.

D. Uncomfortable conditions.

35The author urges readers to consider    .

A. the exact number of elevator lovers

B. the serious future situation of elevators

C. the role of elevators in city development

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we have never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when you are online.   36  Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’ re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.   37

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.   38   If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

39   Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything.  Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you permission to correct everyone else.   40  At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status(婚姻状况). Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A. Everyone was new to the network once.

B. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

C. It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

E. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

F. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

G. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’ d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’ s face.
