When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing. Rivers get polluted. Trees are knocked down. Natural resources are used up. That’s what makes the Galapagos Islands(加拉帕格斯群岛) so special – it’s one of the few places on the Earth that nature can truly call its own.

A visit to the Galapagos is a real eye-opening experience. Over 1,600 km west of Ecuador(厄瓜多尔), the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people. Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins to count the eggs in their nests.

The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago, and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging the environment or putting stress on the animals. Tourists have to pay $100 for the daily fee, and can’t step off the boat unless accompanied by an official guide. Once on the islands, you have to stay on the special car. The animals are so curious about people that they’ll usually come up to say hello.

“It’s a little like being in a zoo,” said one traveler. “But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals are looking at us.”

Besides the wildlife, one of the islands’ more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the problem is that there’s no postman to collect them. Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.

Why do we laugh? For years scientists have asked themselves this question. No animals laugh and smile – only human beings, so does laughing help us to live longer? The answer seems to be that smiling and laughing help us to become calm and less worried, preventing illness which are caused by stress. Laughing is really the best medicine.

Scientists in California asked a group of students to act five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear – just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature were recorded. Most of the feelings they acted didn’t cause changes, but when the students smiled their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. That happened even though they were only acting! So even if we feel sad inside, smiling makes us feel better.

Now, what makes us laugh? The answer to the question is far from simple. Everyone likes jokes, but we don’t laugh at the same ones. It depends largely on how old we are. There’s a kind of jokes, for example, which children love but older people might not find funny.

31. In the passage, the writer seems to pay more attention to _______.

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live?   36  .

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle.   37   . Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about.   38  . If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

39 . According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things.  40    , such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”

A. Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children

B. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent

C. It needs exercise

D. These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear

E. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children

F. A person often thinking about difficult problems is more likely to become a genius

G. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion
