The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is an extra large bat that has got a foxs head, and that feeds on fruit instead of insects (昆虫). Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out flying. A group will live in one spot for years. Sometimes several hundred of them occupy (占据) a single tree. As they return to the tree toward sunrise, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places until long after daylight.

Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only one at a time. At first the mother has to carry the baby on her breast wherever she goes. Later she leaves it hanging up, and brings back food for it to eat. Sometimes a baby bat falls down to the ground and squeaks (尖叫) for help. Then the older ones swoop (俯冲) down and try to pick it up. If they fail to do so, it will die. Often hundreds of dead baby bats can be found lying on the ground at the foot of a tree.

56. The passage tells us that there is no difference between the flying fox and the ordinary bat in______.

   A. their size.

B. their appearance.

   C. the kind of food they eat.

D. the way they rest.

57. Flying foxes tend to ______.

   A. double their number every year.

   B. fight and kill a lot of themselves.

   C. move from place to place constantly.

   D. lose a lot of their young.

58. Flying foxes have fights ______.

   A. to occupy the best resting places.

B. only when it is dark.

   C. to protect their homes from outsiders.

   D. when there is not enough food.

59. How do flying foxes care for their young?

   A. They only care for their own babies.

   B. They share the feeding of their young.

   C. They help when a baby bat is in danger.

   D. They often leave home and forget their young.

In 1909 an English newspaper offered £ 1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colourful.

One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was already well known as a pilot because he had had accidents several times. Some people laughed at him. One man said, He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in an accident!” But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane design.

The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. “Oh, well,” he said, “if I’ m going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now.” Latham was the first to try the flight across the Channel. Ten kilometres from the French coast, his plane had some trouble. It fell down into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette.

Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a farmer’s field. When he did so, a customs  officer rushed up to his plane. “Have you anything to declare?” The officer demanded.

60. The story took place ____ .

   A. in the early 20th century   B. in the 19th century

   C. right after World War I       D. at a time not mentioned in the passage

61. Why did Hubert Latham want to fly across the Channel?

   A. He thought he could manage it easily.

   B. He wanted to be the first one to cross the Channel.

   C. He knew he only had a year to live.

   D. He had always been interested in flying.

62. Which of the following is NOT true?

   A. Latham became a pilot on the doctor’s advice.

   B. He was told he could live another year.

   C. His plane had some trouble.

   D. He was saved by a boat when his plane was sinking.

When TV programs report wars or disasters, the editors rarely use the most horrifying pictures of dead or wounded victims because they don’t want to upset their viewers. Even so, viewers are usually warned in advance that they “may find some of these disturbing” so they can look away if they choose. But the men and women whose jobs are to record those scenes — the TV cameramen — have no such choice. It is their duty to witness the horrors of the war and record them, no matter how gruesome and unpleasant they may be. Consequently, it is one of the most dangerous, exposed and emotionally taxing job that the world offers.

Today, the demand for their work is rising. The explosion of satellite broadcasting and 24 hour news in recent years has created an almost insatiable demand for TV information. But major broadcasters and the TV news agencies — such as Reuters and WTN — have never had enough staff to meet the world wide demand for up to date pictures, so increasingly they turn to “freelance” TV cameramen.

These freelance cameramen are independent operators tied to no particular organization. They will work for any company which hires them for just a few hours or for several weeks in a war zone. But if freelance cameraman is injured in the course of the job, the TV company is not responsible for him. The freelancer must survive on his own.

“TV will always need hard, vivid moving pictures which are fresh, but these companies feel uncomfortable with large numbers of employees on their books,” explains Nik Growing, once foreign editor for Britain’s Channel 4 News and now a BBC news presenter.

“By hiring freelancers, they can buy in the skills they need only when they need them. It also enables them to contract out the risk,” he says.

63. The word “taxing” in Para 1 most probably means ______.

A. demanding                    B. saddening                     C. satisfying         D. encouraging

64. TV news agencies turn to freelance cameramen in order to ______.

A. save expenses and avoid risk

B. get first hand information and pictures

C. look for pictures that are of fine qualities

D. buy the horrifying pictures they need

65. The freelance cameramen _______.

A. need to work on their own

B. have to take great risks in the course of work

C. have better skills than other cameramen

D. are tied to many TV news agencies

66. From the passage we can know that ______.

A. TV cameramen should be given better choice of work

B. TV cameramen are being challenged by the freelancers

C. TV cameramen have to witness disasters and killing whether they like them or not

D.TV cameramen have to contract out the risks for their companies

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(温度计)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. _______71______ . We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven(烤箱). If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.

Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.

Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide._____72_______ .

The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收缩). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.______73______.

First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.

_______74____________.

Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily.

_______75___________.

As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.

A. We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.

B. Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.

C. Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.

D. The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.

E. They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees.

F. Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal (..粘住) them together.

G. People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.
