What happens when the children leave to start new lives at university? Joanna Moorhead talks to some emptynesters.

When Paul, our oldest, left, I remember feeling this terribley sad: it was a physical sadness, almost like walking around with a hangover. It seemed to me like the very opposite of childbirth: that had been about being given someone, my baby, whereas this was a pain, my child being taken away from me. For days the grief was very, very raw; I cried a lot of the time for the first day or two after he left. And that helped a lot, because I needed to feel sad, I needed to grieve for what I was losing.

It didn't get any easier when Adam and then Alice went, either; I remember Alice leaving to go InterRailing, and that was really the start of Tom and I having the house to ourselves; and for several days after she'd gone I wandered around in a bit of daze(头晕), I felt so sad. It felt such a shock, to be suddenly disconnected from this person with whom you've been so involved, whom you've looked after for so long.

Each time one of them has left, I've tried hard not to cry at the moment of parting, but usually I don't manage it. The children have all been really sweet about it—they do understand, at some level, how hard it is for me. But the thing is that the experience they're having is the complete opposite to the experience I'm having: for them, leaving home is all about excitement and adventure and something new, whereas for me it's all about being worried and anxious and feeling that my life isn't nearly so exciting or interesting now; they're not around in it the whole time.

21. How did Paul feel when he entered university?

23. What is the main idea of the whole passage?

AParents cry again and again.         BChildren leave home for university.

CParents are at home alone again      DThe missed parents cry home.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Students at Horry Georgetown Technical College are doing mock(模拟) interviews to get them ready for the real world.

They are learning about body language, as well as what to say, when it comes to finding a job.

Job trainers said when a person walks through the door for an interview he or she has about seven seconds to make a good first impression.

April Garner at Horry Georgetown Technical College said nonverbal skills are essential in getting a job.

She said, “Eye contact is very important. Eye contact can convey whether or not you are sincere or honest about a particular answer.”

Garner explained what you do with your hands can tell an employer a lot about a person. “Do not cross your arms. Crossing your arms can convey that you are unapproachable. Twisting of the hair conveys nervousness. ”

She said using small gestures is okay, but just don't overdo it.

“People talk with their hands and their arms and they are waving them around like they are bringing in airplanes” commented Garner.

Before you even open your mouth an employer can judge on looks alone.

So dress for success, give a firm handshake and get to your interview early so you can have time to calm any nerves.

Also, a person trying to get a job can try breathing techniques before your interview. This helps a person relax and lower your blood pressure.

Garner said people don't realize how controlling your breathing also stops you from blushing or appearing nervous.

24. What's the purpose of the author?

ATo be a winner and get a good job in interview.

BTo use proper body language while interviewing.

CTo learn how to chat with others when in need.

DTo learn a college course while in university.

25. Eye contact can give us ________.

Awhat you think and what you want to do.

BJudgment whether the other is honest or not.

Cwhether the other is kind to you or not.

Dwhat the other really thinks about things.

26. How do we reduce nervousness during interviewing?

ACrossing our arms.                   BTwisting of the hair.

CGiving a firm handshake              DBreathing techniques before your interview.

27. What's the best title of the passage?

I was asked in an email about learning idioms in a foreign language.Maybe I am different from most peoplebut I do not bother with them.To me they are kind of dessert of language learning. They come at the end of a meal.Once you have filled up with the solid fare—the key words and phrases that are used in a variety of situationsthen you can add a few idioms to spice up things. And by that time you will be able to pick them up naturally anyway.

I find that many learners have an obsession(困扰) with slang and idiomsas if repeating some very colloquial expressions is going to upgrade how they sound in a language. In fact it is the opposite.Idioms are difficult to use correctly. They can easily sound very strange coming from someone who obviously does not have a good sense of the language.

Yesoccasionally you hear idioms or slang and do not understand.Butin my experiencethere are always situations where you do not understand. It is best to focus on the most important wordswhat they mean and how they are used.Certainlyit is best for a nonnative speaker to stick to standard speech.

Some teachers even try to teach the “real language”Then you hear nonnative speakers saying things like “I gonna” “You wanna” etc.I just cringe(厌烦)

You will learn all the idioms you need just by exposing yourself to the language. In generalyou can save any phrase that you find interestingand if that includes idiomsgo to it.But I would not make any special effort to go after idioms.Iin factavoid them.If I come across something in Russian that strikes me as a particularly slangy or idiomatic use of wordsI just leave it aside; do not even bother trying to learn it.If it keeps on appearingthen I will learn it.But I would certainly be reluctant(勉强的) to try to use it.

28. In the writer's opinionwhen one learns a new languageone should learn its idioms ________.

Aat the beginning     Bon one's own     Cin the end      Dwithout help

29. The underlined word “colloquial” in Para.2 means “________”.

Aoral             Binformal         Cformal          Dwritten

30. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

Aidioms are the most important part in a language

Bthe writer is not very willing to use idioms

Cnonnative speakers should learn more idioms

Dthere are no ways to master idioms

31. How did the writer develop the passage?

ABy inferring.                            BBy comparing.

CBy listing examples.                     DBy giving explanations.

Nuclear energy is a controversial topic. There has been widespread public debate over it. It seems that the nuclear energy is either a gigantic disaster waiting to happen or the all-powerful way of the future.

It is often believed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society with a huge demand for commercial products of all kinds. Besides, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase assumes an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe nuclear energy provides an endless and economical source of power and that it is therefore fundamental for an industrially developing society. Among other advantages is that nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents a great step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel.

However, opponents(people who oppose something)of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct danger not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Environmentalists argue in the long run nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Furthermore, it is questionable whether nuclear power is a cheap source of energy when everything is considered. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions(设施)could price nuclear power out of the market.

In spite of the case against nuclear energy above, nuclear energy programmes are expanding, which assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments in both sides, it seems that there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.

32.What’s the writer’s attitude toward nuclear energy?

    AObjective        B. Negative        C. Acceptable           D. Appreciative

33.According to the opponents, which of the following is true of nuclear energy?

    AOriginal         BEndless          CCheap            DUnsafe

34.Some people believe that nuclear energy is the most important because         .

Aunclear power stations can be run and maintained by relatively few staff

Bit can meet the growing demand of an industrially developing society

Cit represents a huge step forward in our scientific evolution

Dit provides a perfect way out to increase employment

35.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

___36___ Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. ___37___

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

___38___ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “___39___ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ___40___

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

D. Anger may cause you a cancer.

E. Do not express your anger while angry.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

Mr. Johnson is a hardworking teacher. Every day, he spends too much time with his work. With little sleep and hardly any break, so he works from morning till night. Hard work have made him very ill. “He has ruined his healthy. We are worried about him.” That is which other teachers say. Yesterday afternoon, I paid visit to Mr. Johnson. I was eager to see him, but outside her room I stopped. I had to calm myself down. Quietly I step into the room. I saw him lying in bed, looking at some of the picture we had taken together. I understood that he missed us just as many as we missed him.
