It was the first snow of winter—an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton, Ontario, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.

I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn't fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots." I didn't realise at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.

I handed her my boots and stuck out my feet. Like most children, I expected the adult to do all the work. After much wiggling and pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

I announced, "They're on the wrong feet." With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, "These aren't my boots, you know." As she pulled the offending boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested. Once they were off, I said, "They are my brother's boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!" Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn't an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, "Now, where are your gloves?"

I looked into her eyes and said, "I didn't want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots."

  1. (1) According to the passage, the little girl got          from her brother.
A . the wool snow pants and the jacket B . the jacket and the boots C . the jacket and the hat D . the boots and the gloves
  2. (2) What made it so hard for the teacher to help the little girl put her boots on?
A . The gloves in the toes of the boots. B . The slowness of the teacher. C . The wrong size of the boots. D . The big feet of the girl.
  3. (3) Which of the following sentences from the passage best indicates that the teacher is very considerate?
A . In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter…"(Paragraph 2) B . With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to.… (Paragraph 4) C . she still managed to look both helpful and interested. (Paragraph 4) D . she managed to act as though I wasn't an annoying little girl. (Paragraph 4)

Planning Your Writing

Kelli Plasket is a reporter at TIME for Kids.

Question:How do you get story ideas?

Answer:I read newspapers, news sites and watch TV news daily. I look for stories or topics that would interest kids. I also talk to the people I meet about what's on their minds and what interests them. You never know where you will find a good story!

Suzanne Zimbler is a senior editor at TIME for Kids.

Question: How do you plan and organise a story?

Answer: Once I've learned everything that can be a topic, I decide what information is most important to include. I break down that information into different sections. Then I consider what order those sections should appear in. What do the readers need to know first in order to understand the rest of the story? How will I connect one section to the next? Sometimes, once I've drafted the story, I'll realise that another order works better than my original plan. That's OK. You can always switch paragraphs around and see how they read in a different order. It's part of the revision process.

Andrea Delbanco is a senior editor at TIME for Kids.

Question: How do you complete your writing assignments on time?

Answer: I love working with a deadline! I have a much easier time getting organised when I know that my time to work on an assignment is limited. First, I make a mental map of all of the stages: doing research, taking notes, writing a draft and revising. Then, I make a timeline of how long I think I will need to complete each part. I always hope to finish with enough time to take a break and then look at my writing with fresh eyes.

  1. (1) What does Kelli Plasket mean by saying the underlined sentence?
A . It is always difficult to find a good story. B . We can't miss any source to find a good story. C . Good stories are everywhere, but we can't catch them all. D . It is impossible to know where you'll find a good story.
  2. (2) What process will follow after Suzanne Zimbler has enough information about a topic?
A . To write a draft of the story. B . To break down information into different sections. C . To consider in what order those sections should appear. D . To decide what information is most important to include.
  3. (3) What will Suzanne Zimbler do if she finds her draft will be better in another order?
A . Turn to someone for help. B . Leave it there for a while. C . Change it and see which is better. D . Consider carefully before revising it.
  4. (4) From the text, we can know that Andrea Delbanco          .
A . finds it unpleasant to work with a deadline B . divides her time into equal parts among different stages C . knows exactly how long each stage will need to complete D . makes a careful plan of her time and tries to leave time for a break

Honesty comes in many forms. First there's self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I'm not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, "Always be a first-class version(版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else. "

Then there's honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you've ever been dishonest, I think we all have. Try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can't do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my maths class who didn't do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I'd write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn't thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realised I shouldn't do that anymore, because I wasn't really helping them. They weren't learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn't helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄)into your PBA and will build strength.

  1. (1) The underlined part "appear through smoke and mirrors" in the first paragraph means "         ".
A . to be honest B . to be unreal C . to become clear D . to come from an imagined world
  2. (2) Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland's words?
A . Be your true self rather than follow others. B . Don't copy others or you can't be the first class. C . Make efforts to be the first instead of the second. D . Don't learn from others unless they're excellent.
  3. (3) What does the author expect to show by Jeff's story?
A . Honesty can be of great help. B . A bad thing can be turned into a good one. C . Helping others cheat can do good to nobody. D . One should realise the wrong in his bad deeds.
  4. (4) In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express         .
A . one must be brave to be honest B . it's difficult to be honest when others are not C . one should be honest when making a deposit D . honesty in one's actions can help him in the future

Starting high school is a powerful experience for any teenager. Whether you are coming from a middle school(grades six through eight) or a junior high school (grades seven through nine), there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment, and you will experience many changes.

You will face entering a new school, making new friends in an unfamiliar class, and getting to know new teachers. These new teachers will usually have higher academic(学术的) expectations than your middle-and junior-high school teachers. They want to help you get into college; in return, they expect you to work hard and improve your skills.

Although these are all big changes, they are nothing you cannot handle. There are many different resources available to help you deal with any problem. Your teachers, doctors, parents, and friends are there to help your transition(过渡) into this great new time in your life.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to any of these people, there are many help hotlines you can call to talk anonymously(不具名地). High school may be a time of change, but these changes should be for the better.

Your high school years are a great time in your life. You will gain new freedoms and have new experiences and new responsibilities. Many high school students get their driver's licenses when they turn 16 and gain a new type of independence.

However, other changes are less fun. To fully enjoy your high school experience, try to deal with the situations of your life with which you are not happy.

If you are feeling pressure to do something you feel wrong, talk to a friend or parent to find a solution. If you are not succeeding academically, find a teacher or someone to help you improve. If you feel isolated socially, try to join a school club or group to make new friends.

High school may seem rather difficult at first, but with time, you will come to appreciate everything about your experience.

  1. (1) What will the new teachers expect you to do?
A . Make new friends. B . Behave yourself. C . Obey the school rules. D . Learn more knowledge.
  2. (2) What does the author think of the big changes?
A . They can be dealt with. B . They are not interesting at all. C . They have bad effect on the students. D . They are good to gain new experiences.
  3. (3) If you feel bad to talk about the changes with a familiar person, you can          .
A . chat with strangers B . call help hotlines as you like C . find a solution in the library D . write a letter to an editor in a magazine
  4. (4) What does the passage mainly tell us?
A . How to face the changes while entering high school. B . You should fully enjoy your high school experience. C . The ways of making new friends in an unfamiliar class. D . Life in high school is different from that of your old school.
5. 任务型阅读

How do you enter a room full of strangers? Do you walk right in full of confidence? Or do you try to slip in without being noticed?

In life, we admire those who do their tasks confidently. We prefer people who appear to know what they're doing. But where does that confidence begin?

Developing self-confidence starts very early. It's the parents' role to get kids on the right track towards becoming confident people.  When children make mistakes, their parents should still let them know that they are loved. Children whose parents do these things will likely develop into confident adults. But self-confidence still doesn't come easily. So what's the solution?

With most things in life, practice makes perfect, and that is true of confidence skills.

Always hold your head high and look people in the eye.

Answer questions clearly and confidently. The way you walk shows others how confident you are.

Focus on the things that you do well, and look for opportunities to use those abilities.

You'll approach the task more confidently knowing that you're ready.

All humans fail at times, and you will too.  Learning from mistakes helps you face the same situation later without fear.

A. Prepare thoroughly for every project.

B. But don't allow mistakes to trouble you.

C. Even with practice, you will never be perfect.

D. Parents are often good teachers for their own children.

E. The more you practise them, the easier they will become.

F. The way you go into new situations shows your level of self-confidence.

G. To help that process, parents should always offer more praise than criticism.

Maybe you are more interested in sports than in history. You  (probable) think you will never be a top student. In fact, anyone can become  better student if he or she wants to. If you can use your time well, you may improve your study without much work. The following are my suggestions.

Plan your time  (careful). You should make a list of things that you have to do. First write down the time for eating,(sleep), dressing, etc. Then decide on a good time for studying. Of course, studying shouldn't take all of your time. Don't forget  (leave) yourself enough time for hobbies.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study place. Keep this space. It may be a desk just a corner of your room. No games, radios, or televisions! When you sit down to work, think only about the subject!

Make good use  your time in class. Listen carefully to what the teacher says. Careful listening (mean) less work after class. You also need to take (note), because it can make it easier for you to learn well.

Of all my teachers, Mr Smith is the one who impresses me most. Because he is 54, he looks very young at his age. And he is one of a most popular teachers in our school. Compared with other teacher, Mr Smith pays more attention to his way of teaching. He tries various ways to make his class lively and interestingly. In his opinion, we should not only know "what", but also understand "why". So, instead of give us answers immediately, he encourages us to think by themselves whenever he puts forward questions.
