Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.

A study, which involved nearly 1,400 high school students found those who watched TV for five hours or more every day had less healthy diets than other students five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?

On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack (吃零食) more, and that may influence their longterm diet quality.

On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks make teenagers eat more of those foods. TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.

The researchers found a clear relationship between TV time during high school and diet quality of the young. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who'd watched fewer than two hours every day had the most fruits and vegetables.

As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.

  1. (1) According to the passage, heavy TV viewers are easy to         .
A . eat more fruits B . eat fewer vegetables C . eat less junk food D . eat more food high in calcium(钙)
  2. (2) The underlined word" curbing" in the last paragraph can be replaced by"    ".
    A . adding B . checking C . controlling D . stopping
  3. (3) What suggestion does the author give the parents?
A . They must watch TV with their children. B . They should stop the children from watching TV. C . They should pay attention to nutrition in diets. D . They can't do what they don't want their children to do.

Sarah came running in." Look what I found." Over the top of the paper I was reading came a crispy long object that caused me to jump. It was a snake skin that had been shed by one of our many garden snakes.

"Isn't it beautiful?" said my wideeyed sevenyearold.

I stared at the organic wrapper and thought to myself that it really wasn't that beautiful, but I have learned never to appear uninterested with children. They see only good quality and excellence in the world until educated otherwise.

"Why does it do this?" Sarah asked.

"Snakes shed their skin because they need to renew themselves," I explained." Why do they need to renew themselves?" Sarah asked.

I suddenly remembered an article on this page many years ago where the writer was expressing her concept of renewal. She used layers of paper over a wall to describe how we hide our original selves, and said that by peeling away those layers one by one, we see the original beneath." We often need to shed our skins and those coatings that we cover ourselves with," I said to my now absorbed daughter." We outgrow some things and find other ones unwanted or unnecessary. This snake no longer needs this skin. It is probably too crinkly(起皱的)for him, and he probably doesn't think he looks as smart in it as he once did."

Sarah was getting the point. As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, although slightly, that renewal is part of progress; that we need to take a good look at ourselves, our rooms, schoolwork and creativity, and see what we need to keep and what we need to cast off. I was careful to point out that this is a natural consequence of their growth.

"I see, Dad," said Sarah and jumped off my lap and ran off.

I hoped she would remember this. That often, in order to find our real selves underneath the layers of community and culture with which we cover ourselves year after year, we need to start examining these layers. We need to gently peel some away, as we recognize them to be worthless or unnecessary; or at best, store the ones thrown away as mementoes(念想)of our promotion to a better vitality or spirit.

  1. (1) At the first sight of the snake skin, the author was         .
    A . scared B . puzzled C . uninterested D . excited
  2. (2) Sarah learned from her father that renewal is         .
A . to recover the layers inside B . to review what has been done C . a natural part of getting mature D . the process of finding the unwanted
  3. (3) It can be inferred from the passage that the author         .
A . dislikes the snake skin at all B . shows concern for nature and culture C . can grasp the chance to educate children D . often encourages his daughter to raise questions
  4. (4) The author mainly tells the reader that         .
A . snakes cast off the layers to look smarter B . we should renew ourselves to get improved C . snakes shed their skins to renew themselves D . we should explore our original nature underneath

A bicycle may be seen by most people as just another vehicle(交通工具), but for many Londoners, cycling is a way of life. According to an official UK government survey in 2017, about 570,000 bike journeys are made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.

London introduced a public bikesharing system in 2010."There can be no doubt that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city," Johnson told The Guardian in 2015.

In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway. No matter where you want to go in the city, taking a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice.

And it's not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride. In many companies across the UK, the UK government's Cycle to Work scheme(骑行倡议) allows employees to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax(税). This means that it's common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some employers even provide workplace showers and lockers(储物柜) for their workers. More importantly, a cyclefriendly boss may let you off for being late if you rode a bike to work.

Not only is it great for the environment and our body, cycling is also good for the mind. According to National Geographic Magazine," Bike riding can improve people's happiness."

  1. (1) How does the author show the popularity of cycling in London?
A . By making comparisons. B . By giving examples. C . By using numbers. D . By using famous sayings.
  2. (2) What's the author's attitude toward the bikesharing system in London?
    A . Supportive. B . Doubtful. C . Disappointed. D . Uninterested.
  3. (3) What can employees get from the government under the" Cycle to Work" scheme?
    A . Free bikesharing services. B . A taxfree bike. C . Shorter working hours. D . Workplace showers and lockers.
  4. (4) What's the article mainly about?
A . Cycling as a healthy way of life. B . London's public bikesharing system. C . Why Londoners are encouraged to ride bikes. D . How cycling has become popular in London.

We all need to eat. So, meals could be a chance to stop what we're doing and spend time with the people in our lives. A recent study from a team of South Korea suggests that eating together has many good effects on children and teenagers while frequently eating alone may lead to poor eating habits and poor food choices. People who eat alone more than twice a week have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure.

There are benefits of family dinners on children and teenagers.

In 2014, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) looked at data from nearly threequarters of the world's countries. Among its findings is the fact that students who share a main meal with their families are less likely to hate school. Children who eat a main meal with their families are also less likely to take drugs (毒品).

In the report, titled" The Importance of Family Dinners (VIII)," researchers say that teens who have frequent family dinners are more likely to say their parents know a lot about what's going on in their lives.

Another study from the University of Montreal finds that children who eat with their families experience longterm physical and mental health benefits. These children are physically in better shape and drink fewer sugary soft drinks. These children also seem to have better social skills and are less violent.

One of the researchers, Pagani, involved in this study is a professor at the university. She says that mealtimes with parents possibly provide young children with firsthand social events, which helps them have better communication skills.

  1. (1) Why is eating meals alone frequently bad for people's health?
A . Because people will get a chance to make friends. B . Because people will have a risk of heart attack. C . Because people will show no interest in food. D . Because people will develop poor eating habits.
  2. (2) What's the topic of the passage?
A . Ways to eat together more. B . Benefits of eating together. C . Chances to spend time with people. D . Risks of developing high blood pressure.
  3. (3) What's the advantage of family dinners for children?
A . They could enjoy sweet, and hard drinks. B . They perform better in social activities. C . They feel their parents know more about their studies. D . They experience longterm physical and mental illness.
  4. (4) What's Pagani's attitude to eating family meals together?
    A . Supportive. B . Uninterested. C . Worried. D . Doubtful.

How to Handle Being the New Kid at School

Being the new kid at school can be a terrible experience! It might seem like everybody else knows exactly how to act. But remember you aren't alone. Actually, everybody is nervous on their first day and you can fit right in with the help of the following tips.

Plan ahead the night before.  Lay out your first day outfit (全套服装), pack a lunch, and make sure you have all your school supplies ready to go. Planning ahead can help you get a good night's sleep and feel less nervous about your first day.

Make sure your clothes are cleaned and pressed and that you've showered, brushed your teeth. If you're hoping to attract friends with similar interests, try wearing a shirt with your favorite show, musician, or sports team on it.

Do your best to stay calm and positive. It's normal to feel nervous or anxious when you're the new kid at school. If you feel nervous, start by taking some deep breaths.  You can listen to music that makes you feel calm or happy. Try imagining a good first day in your mind instead of keeping thinking about things that could go wrong.

Don't come in on the first day with your head hanging down, your shoulders lowered, and your eyes on the floor. Walk with your head held up, your back straight, and a bright expression on your face. Make eye contact with other people, and smile if they look at you or speak to you.

Her volunteer (志愿者) work wasn't huge. 4, she was doing small, local good deeds. Gradually, she changed my views on the world and for some reason, I felt I should let her know how her example 5 influenced me.

I could have easily sent her an email, but that seemed not enough for such an important thankyou. That's why I ended up 6 the letter. But now here I was, standing before the mailbox, unable to put the envelope inside. What was stopping me? It suddenly hit me that I was 7 of being too nice. 7. 语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

As an old saying goes," Friends are like wine, the older, the better." Many people consider old friends to be more important than new ones. For example, if two pieces of advice  (give) to solve a problem, one from a new friend and the other from  old friend, people would prefer the  one to the former one, even though the new friend's advice may be better.

I, however,  (agree) with the old saying, believing that new friends are not necessarily  (bad) than old friends. It is not always right  (determine) your friendship by the length(长度) of time.

Once you call someone a friend, he must be a person who is  (rely) and whose interests are in common with  (you). It is mainly his character (性格) and interests  make him your friend. It actually has little to do with time. People's appearance may change, but their character usually stays the same. Therefore, on this point, there is no  (different) between old friends and new friends.

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?

My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.

Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.

Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.

I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.

After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my Xrays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said," There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this years tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.

Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself," Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season."

From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.

Paragraph 1

After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.

Paragraph 2

My hard work proved to be very effective.
