For centuries, people wondered how big the Earth was. Unfortunately, although the Earth was flat, no one was able to figure out its size. Gradually, however, people began to realize that the Earth was really round.

Then, in the third century BC(2,300 years ago), a Greek man named Eratosthenes had an idea. Eratosthenes was sure that the Earth was a sphere. He used the sun and geometry(几何学) to figure out the size of the Earth. He calculated that the circumference(圆周) of the Earth was 28,600 miles(46,000 kilometers). The true size of the Earth is 25,000 miles(40,000 kilometers).

Eratosthenes' measurement was wrong, but it was very close to the truth.

For many centuries after Eratoshenes lived, people made maps of the Earth. However, they did not know very much about the world outside of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Mapmakers could not draw accurate maps of the Earth until people began traveling around the world in the fifteenth century, mapping small areas each time. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, people began making correct maps of countries, but the first accurate maps of the world were not made until the 1890s.

Maps today are reliable(可依靠的), inexpensive, and easy to understand. People depend on maps every day. What would our lives be like without them?

  1. (1) A sphere is a ______.
    A . large shape B . planet C . ball shape D . member of the sun family

The Great Pyramid(金字塔)was built nearly 5,000 years ago for a king called Khufu. It is on the west bank of the Nile River. In fact, all the pyramids along the Nile River are on its west bank. The ancient Egyptians thought of the rising of the sun as the beginning of life and the setting of the sun as the end of life. This is why their bodies were buried on the west of the Nile.

It is very hard to realize just how big the Great pyramid is. It has over 2,000,000 pieces of stones. Most of these big stones weigh two and a half tons each. Some even weigh fifteen tons. Without machinery, the ancient Egyptians cut and moved and lifted each of these stones. Almost all the stones came from the east bank of the Nile, and they were taken across the river in boat. It took more than 100,000 people twenty years to build the Great Pyramid.

The Great Pyramid is over 450 feet high today. Each of the sides of the Pyramid is 755 feet long. It takes about twenty minutes to walk all the way around it.

A . Because the kings liked there B . Because the poor people were buried on the east C . Because Egyptians thought “west” meant the end of life. D . Because the kings could see the sun from there
  2. (2) How did the ancient Egyptians carry stones from across the Nile?

I believe that only when you do that you should do can you make progresses in life. In my opinion, it is waste of time going to see the film right now. That's why I decided to give up seeing the film with him and working hard at my lessons. Lucy felt this a great pity that I couldn't see the film with her.
