When Lamont Thomas, a retired restaurant employee, became an empty-nester, it was the end of a parenting story. A couple years ago, the divorced father of two became a hero when he took on a kid named Michael Perez in 2001.

"He was a good young man and I just hated to see him in the welfare system," Thomas said.

Thomas eventually adopted Perez, who now works as a nurse.

Perez was just the beginning. Over the next 15 years, Thomas raised more than 30 kids. He did so all as a single parent and with all of his heart.

"Every child that I have had, it was my goal to make a difference in their lives," he said.

When he retired from raising children to spend time fishing and traveling, that didn't last for long.

"It really was a shocker," Perez said. "I didn't expect for him to restart and to do it all over again. "

Thomas began to foster again when he found out that five brothers and sisters all under the age of 6 were going to be permanently broken up. To guarantee they stayed a family, he adopted all of them too.

"I had to help them. They deserved to be raised together," Thomas said.

After Thomas' story first aired, CBS News received a lot of surprising mail from women who expressed interest in the great man. Some notes weren't obvious, others were braver, "Ask Mr. Thomas if he would like a pen pal," wrote one woman, while another said, "I'll marry Lamont!"

But the kids see no room for romance, nor does Thomas.

"I was about to change my phone number," he said.

So he remains single. He spent Thanksgiving with family and is more grateful than ever.

  1. (1) What was Lamont Thomas' job before retirement?
    A . A hospital worker. B . A social worker C . A food business worker. D . A welfare system worker.
  2. (2) What is the Lamont Thomas' purpose of taking over 30 children?
A . He wants all the children to stay a family. B . He wants to spend Thanksgiving with family. C . He doesn't want to remain single after his retirement. D . He wants to do something meaningful in their lives
  3. (3) What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word "foster"?
    A . encourage children B . bring up children C . train children D . cure children
  4. (4) The passage is mainly about____________.

Few fruits carry more health-promoting antioxidants (抗氧化剂) than blackcurrants (黑 加仑 ) . Widely grown in cooler parts of Europe, they are in high demand from consumers seeking chemical-free juices made from the berries. Farmers, though, can struggle to increase productions without relying on chemicals. That could change, not just for blackcurrants but other fruit too, with the careful use of probiotics(益生菌) .

Probiotics is mostly known for its use of tiny 1iving things, including certain bacteria, to restore or improve the digestion in people and animals. But plants can benefit from bacteria too. Among: other things, bacteria help plants produce things that keep: disease-causing viruses off their leaves, support them in collecting nutrition from the environment and help them melt minerals found in the soil.

Knowing all this. Virgilija Gaveliene and Sigita Jurkoniene. of the Institute of Botany Nature Research Centre in Lithuania, set out to find a way to use probiotics to increase the production of blackcurrant bushes, which are grown in that country. The researchers also knew from other work that the production of strawberries and raspberries could be increased by exposing: plants to a carefully selected mix of bacteria.

As they report in Agriculural Science and Technology the results were impressive. While thousand blackcurrants collected randomly weighed just over 538 grams,; the same number from the field exposed-to bacteria treatments weighed nearly 783 grams. A similar increase was also true for the field using the probiotics.

Drs. Jurkoniene and Gaveliene are convinced that: the right mix of bacteria can help blackcurrant farmers meet demand without using chemicals. And it could help other growers. What works for berries should in theory work for other fruit like apples, pears and oranges. More experiments are needed to be sure.

  1. (1) Blackcurrants are in high demand mainly because_________
A . they are widely grown in cooler parts of Europe B . consumers are looking for berry juices free from chemicals C . farmers increase production of blackcurants using probiotics D . few other fruits are more nutritious than blackcurrants
  2. (2) Probiotics can't help plants to_________
A . improve their digestion and nutrition B . get rid of harmful viruses from their leaves C . collect nutrition from the environment D . melt minerals obtained from the soil
  3. (3) It can be inferred from the passage that__________
A . probiotics can only be used to prevent growth of plants B . blackcurrants grown in Lithuania are more impressive C . blackcurrants production is increased due to probiotics D . bacteria must be removed from plants to promote production
  4. (4) The passage is most probably selected from_________
    A . an online novel B . a science magazine C . a travel brochure D . a fashion website

Do you like to bury your head in a good book? Getting absorbed in a good story is a great way to relax. It improves your reading ability: and; according to some experts, it's good for your health as well. Studies show that it can increase our emotional intelligence as we understand a range of angles and motivations. But despite these benefits, does the way we consume a story make any difference?

For the purist (讲究规范的人) ,the only way to digest a good story is with a paperback or hardback book. But the traditional book has had a competitor in recent years from e-books, which are read on e-readers or tablets. An "electronic" book enables you to store hundreds of books in one place and allows you to download books directly.

The e-book has become popular in schools, too, and according to one school in London it's encouraged more children to read. 11-year-old Summit told the BBC: "If you really want a book, you can just get it online. It's so easy; and it's made me read more. I probably read every day now. " For adults e-books are certainly a lightweight way of accessing our favourite literature on the move.

The recent lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic have certainly given us all time to read more. Last year some 202 million paperbacks and hardbacks were sold and the publishing industry hopes this trend will continue now that people have got into the habit of reading more.

But for those who can't or don't want to look at the text in a book, there are audiobooks to listen to. Some authors are even skipping print and writing audio content only. No matter what your reading preference, there's no doubt we have too many choices in how we read a good story.

Paper Industry in the Recovery

Today the paper industry has, like many others, been hit by the Covid- 19 outbreak. But the industry is expected to bounce back in 2021, and by 2023, it's predicted to reach new heights of $1,031 billion.

Last spring the world was impacted by the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020, as people rushed to pile up this bathroom product. People just lost their heads to follow the rush. Anyway, today the tissue market is still growing. Meanwhile, the Covid- 19 outbreak brought added bonus to this industry. Others have temporarily switched to surgical face masks to meet the demand for personal protection equipment.

But there's more surprising medical use for paper: rapid tests. The system is widely used for many tests, such as to detect HIV or if a person has developed antibodies to Covid- 19. There has been a sharp decrease in the number of customers wanting to reach into a pot to fetch spoons, forks or straws for obvious reasons, causing restaurants to use more and more single use packaging. Meanwhile, schools have started to provide paper lunch boxes so that students don't need to eat all together in a canteen.

After months of lockdown, practical hobbies such as DIY, crafts, and art have recently experienced a recovery. Some paper companies have seen more interest in paper for art and design.

Paper is now protecting us from infections and boredom, and it will always be a valuable material in our life.

A. Then there's art.

Soapy is a twenty-four-pound rabbit. People look surprised when they first touch him and remark how soft he is. I've noticed he seems to make everyone who meets him a little softer, too. So when I started to work as a volunteer in the community, I decided to take him with me as a therapy(疗法) animal.

One day, Soapy and I visited a shelter for women who had suffered from violence. The women in the shelter all looked at me in low spirits. No one smiled a greeting. One little girl in particular caught my attention. Never raising her eyes, never reaching out, she wandered in and out of the gathered group. The staff informed me that the little girl, named Alice, had been there for over a month and had not spoken the entire time. Nothing they tried had any effect. I didn't want to imagine what would have happened to rob this little girl of the curiosity and enthusiasm so natural to childhood.

Spreading a blanket on the floor, I sat down and opened Soapy's carrier. As the women circled around me, I told the group that Soapy would come to them if they sat on the blanket. Several women did this, including Alice. In a short time, Soapy emerged from his carrier and slowly jumped from one woman to another. After touching Soapy, these women looked down. and smiled softly. Soapy continued his rounds, and the women gradually began to talk about Soapy and I chatted with them as I kept one eye on Alice. She sat rigidly at the edge of the blanket legs held out straight in front of her. She was staring hard at Soapy. It appeared that Soapy kept making eye contact with her, too. He would jump from person to person, each visit taking him closer to her. I began to wonder if he was stopping to give her time to watch him. I looked at her again. She sat there nervously, just staring.

Paragraph 1:

Finally Soapy came to a stop when he was about two inches from Alice's legs.

Paragraph 2:

Days later, I revisited the shelter with Soapy: surprised to find Alice even happier than before.
