Forgiveness

    To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

    Try the following steps:

    Calm yourself. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

    Don't wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don't see things the same way. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

    Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

    If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.

    Don't forget to forgive yourself. But it can rob you of your self­confidence if you don't do it.

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn't very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn't catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, "Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish." I remember being even more upset then because, "I'm not a fish!" I didn't know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?

As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don't have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.

When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, "We all need to think like salespeople." But it didn't completely make sense. My dad never once said, "If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman." What he said was, "You need to think like a fish." Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

George Washington Carver was born some time in the early-mid 1860s. A sickly child, Carver was unable to work in the fields, so he did gardening. He was left with many free hours to walk in the woods — beginning his career with nature. He soon became known as the "Plant Doctor" and would help friends and neighbors manage sick plants.

In 1890, Carver began to study music and art at Simpson College. His artwork was on show at the 1893 World's Fair. Painting gave him the chance to combine his two loves — art and nature. Yet it was his talents (天赋) for gardening that took him in another direction in 1891. Carver became the first African-American to attend what is today Iowa State University. He proved to be a first-class student and upon graduation he became the school's first African-American teacher.

In 1896, he received an invitation from Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon arriving, he found that the school was short of money so Dr. Carver had to equip his own lab. He and his students would search trash heaps (垃圾堆) for things to use. This proved that Dr. Carver was well ahead of his time.

In 1916, he published a research report on peanuts, which helped many farmers turn to peanuts as a cash crop and saved the economy (经济) of the South when it was destroyed by the cotton insects attack. Carver continued his research with the peanut. He went on to find many uses for the peanut. But he didn't invent peanut butter (花生酱).

Dr. Carver's research earned him much worldwide praise. Dr. George Washington Carver died on January 5, 1943, and was buried at Tuskegee. Carver contributed his whole life savings to Tuskegee. Upon his death, Franklin D. Roosevelt gave him this title "an inspiring example to youth everywhere."

In today's competitive student world, the ability to work harmoniously with other people is a good way of marking yourself off from everybody else. While teamwork may offer the chance to blame others for your mistakes, you can never blame them for your failings as a teammate. In any case, working out where to apportion blame is not a good way to approach membership of any new team. Instead, get to know one another, so you can build up a shared identity and combine your strengths. Find out each other's values, weaknesses, and past achievements.

Don't shy away from conflicts but work out how to deal with them. Humour can be a good glue, so have a laugh together.

Before settling down to business, it's important to establish ground rules. First, make sure you all share the same concept of time. Then, work out how you are going to make and communicate decisions. These are probably best made at a formal meeting and communicated by e­mail. You must also agree on who will be responsible for making decisions.

Even if you have decided that decisions don't have to be unanimous (一致的), it is important that every team member is kept involved, including those who always disagree with the majority view, rarely say a word, or have a strange haircut.

Once you've got your rules of engagement, define what you want to achieve, and set the deadline. Work out what you have to do before the time is up to do it. The team must assign (分配) roles according to everyone's individual skills. Remember that every task is equally important.

Whatever your role, it is important to keep a record of what has been decided at each stage and what each member of the team has contributed. Then, when the task is over, you can review how well it went.

Last Wednesday, we were having our English class when a teacher suddenly slipped and fell. We are all worried about him. One of the boy carried him on the back, with the help of some others, to the clinic immediate. It turned out that her right leg was broken but he had to stay in hospital. The following day, we went to visit him with flowers. Seen him lying in bed with his leg wrapped in bandages, so we felt sorry for him and hoped that he would recover soon.
