Whether you want to spend your new year in a nearby attraction or a distant one, there are plenty of wonderful places for you to lead in 2020.

Nashville, Tennessee

Music City knows how to throw a festive party at any time of year, but over New Year's Eve you can enjoy the annual Jack Daniel's Music City Midnight concert, offering a free show to the public to count down to the new year as a music note drops. In Nashville, the average flight price for January has been under $300 and the average price for a hotel has been under $250.

Laguna Beach, California

If your ideal destination involves sand, surfing, diving or sailing, slip away to Laguna Beach. During New Year's week you can stay at high-end hotels with reasonable prices. At Casa Laguna Hotel Spa you can take advantage of charge-free beach chairs and breakfast as well as a heated swimming pool. For a more cost-effective stay, consider checking into Laguna Beach Lodge.

Honolulu

New Year's Eve in Honolulu offers a winning combination of festive beachfront fireworks displays and family-friendly amusements. "There are various fun activities specially designed for families with kids of all ages — that's what makes it well-known," says Carrie Peters, travel editor at Hotwire.com. Hotel deal site GoSeek.com shows rooms for under $200 per night for stays from Dec 30 to Jan 3, 2020.

Portland, Oregon

For an undisturbed New Year, consider Portland, for the simple reason that you can walk anywhere without being bothered. Plus, you can stay in five-star accommodations without getting your wallet flat. Gertrude was just an average kid with an average life. She lived in an average sized house in an average neighborhood. At home, she helped out just enough to get by. At school, she did just enough homework to stay out of trouble. She had straight Cs in all of her classes.

One day Gertrude's teacher, Mr. Mister, stopped her after class. "Gertrude" he said, "I know that you can do better. I've seen the work you do in class, and some of it is amazing…Way better than C work." Gertrude knew that there were moments when she tried a little harder than what everyone expected. But she just didn't have confidence in herself. She didn't really believe that she could change; in fact, she was scared by the thought of having the power to become whatever she wanted. She stopped listening to Mr. Mister about half way through his speech and just nodded her head until he stopped.

That night, Gertrude had a dream. It was ten years into the future and she was still living with her mom in her average neighborhood. A voice spoke in the dream: "The present is nothing more than the outcome of the choices made in the past. The future will be the results of the choices we make today." Gertrude started crying average sized tears, because she knew that she helped shape the world in which she lived, and the choices she made produced the options she had. She woke up with her pillow wet.

Gertrude was relieved to be back in middle school. She took a little more care in getting herself ready that morning, and she felt better than normal. She tried harder in school, and she felt smarter than usual. She helped more around the house and it looked better. Sure, there were still lots of things that Gertrude struggled with, but just trying her best made her feel better when she didn't succeed. Gertrude even became great at failing by learning from her mistakes.

  1. (1) Which of the following words can best describe Gertrude in Paragraph 1?
    A . Popular. B . Optimistic. C . Common. D . Aggressive.
  2. (2) Where did Gertrude's problem actually lie?
    A . In herself. B . In her family. C . In her teacher. D . In her studies.
  3. (3) What did Gertrude learn from her dream?
A . It is shameful to be an average kid with an average life. B . The choices she makes at present will shape her future. C . The present is not the result of the choices made in the past. D . She could hardly do anything for the world in which she lived.
  4. (4) What can we say for sure about Gertrude from the last paragraph?
A . She suffered more. B . She failed in her attempts. C . She changed her attitude. D . She was glad about failures.

Next month, I'm traveling to a remote area of Central Africa and my aim is to know enough Lingala—one of the local languages—to have a conversation. I wasn't sure how I was going to manage this until I discovered a way to learn all the vocabulary I'm going to need. Thanks to Memrise, the app I'm using. It feels just like a game.

"People often stop learning things because they feel they're not making progress or because it all feels like too much hard work," says Ed Cooke one of the people who created Memrise. "Were trying to create a form of learning experience that is fun and is something you'd want to do instead of watching TV."

Memrise gives you a few new words to learn and these are "seeds" which you plant in your "greenhouse". When you practice the words, you "water your plants". When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your "garden". And if you forget to log on, the app sends you emails that remind you to "water your plants".

The app uses two principles about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they link them to a picture in their mind. Memrise translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use "mems". For example, I memorized motele, the Lingala word for "engine", using a mem I created﹣I imagined an old engine in a motel room.

The second principle is that we need to stop after studying words and then repeat them again later, leaving time between study periods. Memrise helps you with this, because it's the kind of app you only use for five or ten minutes a day.

I've learnt hundreds of Lingala words with Memrise. I know this won't make me a fluent speaker, but I hope I'll be able to do more than just smile when I meet people in Congo. Now, I need to go and water my Vocabulary!

  1. (1) What does Ed Cooke make an effort to do with Memrise?
A . Create memorable experiences. B . Make progress with hard work. C . Master languages through games. D . Combine study with entertainment.
  2. (2) What do the underlined words "water your plants" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A . Learning new words. B . Being a Memrise user. C . Logging on to the app. D . Taking care of your garden.
  3. (3) How does Memrise work?
A . By providing learners with interesting pictures. B . By helping learners lean from mistakes. C . By offering learners human translation services. D . By encouraging learners to link words to pictures in their mind.
  4. (4) What is the author's attitude towards Memrise?
    A . Positive. B . Doubtful. C . Uncaring. D . Disapproving.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.

"Many focus on the benefits of digital devices in education but ignore the costs," said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, "losing the ability to understand the emotions(情感) of other people is one of the costs."

Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures and videos of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five﹣day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.

Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn't show much improvement.

The study is not perfect in some sense, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us. "Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real communication." said Professor Taylor, a professor at the university of San Francisco.

Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2—16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising. Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑)(59%)and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带)(53%)!

So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called "Generation Helpless".

  1. (1) According to Professor Greenfield, using digital devices in education leads to       .
A . getting along well with family members B . failing to understand other peoples emotions C . making more mistakes when taking exams D . falling far behind others in all schoolwork
  2. (2) Scientists think the results of Greenfield's experiment       .
A . are far from perfect B . are quite surprising C . are worth considering D . need to be improved
  3. (3) What can we know from the text?
A . Students learned how to describe emotions in the experiment. B . Students living without screens did much better in studies. C . Too much play with digital devices raised some worries. D . Most of the UK children couldn't tie their shoe laces.
  4. (4) What is the best title for the text?
A . Screens harm emotions B . Here comes a digital world C . Stay away from the Internet D . How people become addicted?

It makes memories stick, I draw in order to capture (捕获) moments from my life. I'm not great at drawing, but that's not the point. Sometimes I draw the view from the window of my hotel room-whether it's a great view or not. Remember, the idea is to capture the moment, not create a masterpiece. Other times I draw from my dinner table.

B. It's a good reminder that failure is OK.

D. It takes time to create something interesting
