When Sophia was 2 years old, a butterfly landed on her. After that she was absorbed in insects. "If she keeps an insect, she always names it and will talk to them and kiss them." Spencer. Sophia's mom said "When she has one, she always makes sure to learn what it eats and what the best habitat for it is." Sophia's love for insects used to get her bullied(霸凌) by kids of her age.

Afraid that being called "strange" would cause Sophie to lose her enthusiasm, Spencer wrote a letter to a scientific society last year, explaining that her 8-year-old daughter loved to learn and explore the world of insects and asked if professional entomologist(昆虫学家) would be willing to speak to her over the phone or write her letter encouraging her in her dreams.

After an outpouring of love and support from the scientific community online, she has a newfound confidence in her scientific interest- along with her first byline(署名) in a scientific journal. Last August, the Society posted the letter online, writing, "A young girl who loves insects is being bullied needs our support". Besides, Sophia took lessons from Morgan, an entomology Ph.D." Last week she caught a fly and it had babies. Morgan called her to walk her through the process of raising the young insects, which she plans to set free after they are adults. At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their pocket money on unimportant things like candy and toys, Jose was busy saving money for more necessary things. To try to get his peers to do the same, the youngster from Peru came up with the new idea of an eco-bank, which allows kids of all ages to become economically independent and financially intelligent - while also helping the environment.

Founded in 2012, the Bartselana Student Bank is the world's first cooperative bank for kids. Possible members have to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank partners are required to bank at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis. The waste is sold to local recycling companies. The funds received are placed in the individual's account where they collect until his/her savings goal is reached. The account holder can then take out his/her money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger goal.

The youngster's determination paid off, and by 2013, the Bartselana Student Bank had over 200 members. Things have only improved since. Today, the eco-bank is proud of ten educational centers. They are designed to teach over 3,000 teenagers to become economically independent, invest(投资) wisely, and help the environment. Now the Bartselana Student Bank began accepting applications from kids all across Peru. With 4G still being used in many parts of the world, 5G mobile technology is on its way-and the effect will likely cover more areas beyond the telecoms(电信) industry. With more devices (设备)being connected and different players entering the field, it becomes difficult to set a global standard. The question is what a 5G network will look like.

The race is on to provide an answer. Last month America's largest two mobile operators said they would begin testing. Japan wants a 5G network in place for the Olympics Games in 2021. Recently a series of new 5G cooperation was announced. Devices makers such as China's Huawei presented devices and technology.

There is no lack of enthusiasm, or willingness to make large investments(投资). Nor is there a shortage of demand, as rapid growth in data traffic increases pressure for a better wireless network. There is, however, a lack of agreement on various issues, for example which band of wireless technologies to use, and what standards to set for network devices and handset makers. Until now the telecoms industry has agreed only on general set of requirements about connection speeds and response times. The matter grows more complex as more types of players enter the field. Media companies want generous bandwidth for streaming. Internet firms want low power consumption. The online gaming companies are worried about response times.

Most important of all are the big technology firms. Companies need to sell more smart phones and other mobile devices. They also want to make a lot of money. Even Google has also shown an interest in 5G. One of the biggest questions is how 5G could change the industry's structure. Some say that further relief is unavoidable. 5G could bring about the long-expected combination of computer and telecoms devices makers.

  1. (1) What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A . 5G technology is being used in most countries. B . The competition in 5G technology is being heated up. C . The telecoms industry set up a global standard for 5G network. D . Huawei will provide sports devices for the 2021 Olympics Games.
  2. (2) Which word best describes the author's attitude towards 5G technology?
    A . Pessimistic. B . Unfriendly. C . Objective. D . Positive.
  3. (3) What's the purpose of the author in writing the text?
A . To introduce the dawn of 5G mobile technology. B . To describe a global race of telecoms devices. C . To present the rapid development of technology. D . To analyze the amazing influences of 5G on life.

How much time do you spend sitting every day? Imagine sitting for nearly one-third of your life -to what degree would your health be affected? According to research, if one sits for long periods of time, the risk of diseases like obesity, diabetes and cancer will be greatly increased. A study in Australia even found that by reducing our sitting time to three hours a day, our lifespan(寿命) could be lengthened by two years!

Now ask yourself, "Where do I normally spend long periods of time sitting?" So what can we do to change that? One solution is that our classroom furniture could be changed to allow ourselves more standing time. It might seem absurd, but standing to learn is definitely an idea worth achieving.

To put this idea into practice, we have come up with a new idea-the Two-in-one sitting-standing- desk. How does this new invention work? First, the desk has extendable(可延长)legs so that the height of the desktop can be adjusted according to students' needs. That means students can easily switch between sitting and standing positions. Second, there are two swing bars at the bottom of the desk which allow students to exercise their legs when they feel restless.

Some people might worry that if students are allowed to stand in class, they will be easily distracted(分心) and move around. Yet research shows the opposite to be true. People tend to be more focused if they are allowed to work standing up. It is for this reason that a pair of swing bars have been fixed to turn those restless moments into beneficial exercise without interrupting schoolwork.

If sitting is the new smoking, the Two-in-one standing desk is the way to go for a healthier and more effective classroom.

A. So it's not real hard to explain.

B. It also comes with a high chair.

C. Without doubt, that is at school.

D. Obviously standing is better than sitting.

E. Probably seven to eight hours, or even more.

F. Sometimes you need strength of mind to stand up.

G. Of course, it is unfair to ask students to remain absolutely still for hours.

My very first fur baby was white cat named Rebel. I got him from the Animals' Center, and he quickly took over the house and my heart. He was almost six months old when he disappeared, and I was heartbroken.

I searched for him everywhere, talking to the neighbours, putting up posters, and even offering a reward. I checked the shelter and the emergency vet clinic to see if he had been injured or picked up. No one had seen him, so I kept searching.

I lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and Rebel didn't have "street smarts" because he was an indoor cat. I also had an idea that if he got lost, he wouldn't be able to find his way home. Every time I went out, I would search for him as I drove down the road. Nothing.

Weeks went by with no sign of my cat. Everyone said I had to accept the result that was certain to happen -either he was dead, or someone else had him and was giving him a good home. I didn't accept that. I just couldn't.

After two weeks with no sign of him. I put his bed, toys, food, bowls, and litter box into storage so I wouldn't have to walk by the sad reminders every day. But I still wasn't ready to give up.

One morning. I left for work few minutes early and started walking to the bus stop a block away. It was a nice autumn day, pleasantly cold and sunny- a good day for a walk. I arrived at the bus stop and checked to see if the bus was coming, but I was still a little early. Something told me to keep going, so I decided to walk to the next bus stop. I got there and saw the bus coming, but I just kept walking and watching the bus swiftly pass by, knowing I was going to be late for work. But something told me to keep going.
