Of course, she wasn't really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us—at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions, so I looked for every opportunity to work the name into as many conversations as possible.

As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years, my mother helped Aunt Fannie make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She was well-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and keep the secret.

Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie's visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process, Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it.“Hold onto this coin,”she said,“and someday you will be rich.I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother. “So, I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich.

I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people's eyes Aunt Fannie's success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me? it was just a common recipe. Neither have made me become a rich person, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build.

  1. (1) Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversations?
A . She liked Aunt Fannie's recipe. B . She was frightened of Aunt Fannie. C . She enjoyed her parents' reactions. D . She greatly respected “Aunt Fannie”.
  2. (2) The underlined word “She” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
    A . Aunt Fannie B . the author's grandmother C . the author's mother D . Aunt Fannie's grandmother
  3. (3) In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to _____.
A . hold onto the first coin in life B . make as many friends as possible C . make money with their own hands D . spend more time with family and friends
  4. (4) What could be the best title for this passage?
    A . The Key to Success B . Blueberry Jam Recipe C . A Fortune Built from a Coin D . A Relationship of Trust

Runners who encounter visual and auditory(听觉的) distractions may be mo re likely to suffer leg injuries, according to research by the Association of Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. Runners often seek distractions from the task at hand. Whether it is music, texting, daydreaming, taking in the sights, or propping a book up on the treadmill(跑步机),more often than not a distraction is welcome. But, researchers from the University of Florida have recently discovered that those distractions may lead to injury.

Daniel Herman, MD, assistant professor at the University of Florida, and his team conducted research on the effects of visual and auditory distractions on 14 runners to determine what effect these distractions would have on things such as the heart rate, how many times a runner breathes per minute and how much oxygen is consumed by the body.

The runners were all injury-free at the time of the study and ran 31 miles each week. Dr. Herman^ team had each participant run on a treadmill three separate times. The first time was without any distractions. The second time added a visual distraction, during which the runners concentrated on2 a screen displaying different letters in different colors with the runners having to notice when a specific letter-color combination appeared. The third time added an auditory distraction similar to the visual distraction, with the runners having to notice when a particular word was spoken by a particular voice.

When compared to running without distractions, the participants had faster application of force to their left and right legs, called the loading rate, with auditory and visual distractions. They also experienced an increased amount of force from the ground on both legs, called ground reaction force, with auditory distractions. Finally, the runners tended to breathe heavier and had higher heart rates with visual and auditory distractions than without any distractions at all.

“Running in environments with different distractions may unfavorably affect running performance and injury risk," explains Dr. Herman. "Sometimes these things cannot be avoided, but you may be able to minimize potentially cumulative(累积的) effects. For example, when running a new route in a chaotic environment such as during a marathon, you may want to skip listening to something which may require more attention—like a new playlist."

Dr. Herman's team will continue to investigate the potential relationship between distracted running and leg injuries, and any effect this relationship has on different training techniques that use auditory or visual cues.

  1. (1) Paragraph 2 tells us the research ______.
    A . process B . questions C . results D . reflection
  2. (2) Based on the research, runners with auditory distractions tended to ____.
A . breathe heavier and have lower heart rates B . gain a faster speed with slower loading rates C . apply more force with less oxygen consumption D . get an increased amount of ground reaction force
  3. (3) What can we infer from the passage?
A . Running with distractions becomes uncommon nowadays. B . Listening to a new song while running guarantees perfonnance. C . Runners are advised to minimize distractions in a destination of marathon. D . Runners are more likely to get injured in an environment without distractions.
  4. (4) What is probably the next task for Dr. Herman's team?
A . What determines training techniques?     B . What effective ways can cure leg injuries? C . Why runners use auditory and visual cues? D . How distractions should be used in training?

An experimental clean-up device called RemoveDEBRIS has successfully cast a net around a dummy(仿真的) satellite, simulating a technique that could one clay collect spaceborne garbage.

The test, which was carried out this week, is widely believed to be the first successful demonstration of space clean-up technology, experts told CNN. And it symbolizes an early step toward solving what has already been a critical issue: junk in space.

Millions of pieces of space junk are turning around in orbit, the result of 50 years of space travel and few regulations to keep space clean. At orbital speeds, even a small bit of paint crashing with a satellite can cause critical(严重的) damage.

Various companies have plans to send thousands of new satellites into low-Earth orbit, already the most crowded area.

The RemoveDEBRIS experiment is run by a company and researchers led by the U. K.'s Surrey Space Centre and includes Airbus, Airbus-owned Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. and Fiance's ArianeGroup.

Guglielmo Aglietti, director of the Surrey Space Centre, said that an operational version of the RemoveDEBRIS technology would cast a net that remains fastened to the main satellite so the debris(碎片) can be dragged out of orbits. It could target large pieces of junk, including dead satellites up to 10 meters long.

The RemoveDEBRIS satellite will conduct a few more experiments in the coining months, including testing navigation features that could help guide the satellite to a specific piece of debris.

There are still enormous barriers to clear before operational clean-up tasks are underway, he said, and the most discouraging is figuring out how to fund such projects.

Aglietti, the Surrey professor who helped lead the RemoveDEBRIS project, said, "The challenge will lie in persuading the relevant authorities to sponsor these tasks." Aglietti said he hopes RemoveDEBRIS will conduct a few clean-up tasks per year, targeting the largest pieces of junk in the most crowded orbits.

  1. (1) What is the use of the RemoveDEBRIS satellite?

A . Disposing of space wastes. B . Demonstrating space technology. C . Imitating a developing technique. D . Solving serious junk problems.
  2. (2) How does the RemoveDEBRIS satellite work?

A . By throwing a net to take the junk from orbits. B . By fastening it to the main satellite tightly. C . By dragging satellites up to 10 meters long. D . By targeting large pieces of junk carefully.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word “sponsor” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A . Accomplish. B . Support. C . Oppose. D . Provide.
  4. (4) What's the best title for the text?
A . A Critical Issue: Junk in Space B . How RemoveDEBRIS Is Developed C . Why the RemoveDEBRIS Satellite Is Invented D . RemoveDEBRIS Collects Space Junk for the First Time

The Three Gorges region is a scenic area along the Yangtze River in China with a total length of about 200 km. The Three Gorges region is located along the Yangtze River between the cities of Fengjie and Yichang in Chongqing Municipality(直辖市) and Hubei Province.

Although it is primarily famous for its scenery, the Three Gorges region is historically and culturally an important region in China. The Three Gorges Dam is located at a place called Sandouping(三斗坪) in the middle of the Xiling Gorge.

The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has an influence on the ecology and people of the region. That is to say, a lot of towns and villages will have to move to other places. Because the water level is higher, the gorges are narrower and the mountains appear lower. They point out that because the mountains reach several thousand feet above the river, the gorges still offer fascinating views of the surrounding cliffs, and it should be noted that most river boat companies that operate in the Three Gorges intend to continue to offer tours of the region. Therefore, it is predicted that river traffic of all kinds will increase.

A. Besides, the dam also changes the scenery of the Three Gorges.

B. The Three Gorges region is most known for its beautiful scenery.

C. Supporters of the dam are in favour of the construction.

D. The increase in width of the Three Gorges also allows larger ships through the gorges.

E. But at present the Three Gorges region is most famous for the Three Gorges Dam.

F. The Three Gorges Dam surprises the whole world for its construction.

G. The Three Gorges take up 120 km within this region.

The Amazon rainforest is so important that frequently regarded as the “lungs of the planet”. Scientists have found a small number of tree species that are doing the heaviest 1as they help to 2 global warming.

Their discovery that 182 species 3 half the rainforest wood-bound carbon suggests that the future of the world's climate, and the lines of its coastal areas are 4 with the fate of this small part of about 16,000 Amazonian tree species.

Despite ongoing logging (伐木工作)and recent drought, the Amazon is 5to perhaps a sixth of the carbon stored in living plants the world over, helping to keep 6 of climate-changing carbon dioxide 7in the atmosphere.

The Amazon is a particularly important carbon stock, and it's currently 8 a carbon sink,” Sophie Fauset said. ” What we're trying to do is increase our understanding of 9this carbon is going and which trees are storing it.”

“There are a few species that seem to grow 10 and those are the huge ones you'd want to emphasize in the 11 of the forest,” said professor John Battles.

“If you were managing to protect these forests, you would leave these trees.”

One of the most carbon-hungry types of trees 12 in the study was the Brazil nut tree, which grows 13 that can easily go beyond a height of 100 feet. 14 total growth and productivity they ranked fourth overall, and they were found to 15 1.3 percent of the forest's carbon.

“Given the huge biological diversity of tropical forests, 16 cycling would be more equally distributed among plant species,” Rosie Fisher said. “This 17 overturns (推翻)the originally imagined pattern.”

Fisher said she would be “ 18 to suggest the most obvious idea that we could store lots of carbon by planting these very large species”. Because so little is

known about how 19 they are to the types of droughts and fires that are 20 to become more common in the future, nor whether they would thrive (茁壮成长) in managed forests.
