Do you know what a" non-zero day" is? A friend of mine once introduced the concept(概念) of "non-zero days" to me.

"Non-zero days" means forming certain habits so that you can1your goals(目标).

First, you get a calender and2it on your wall. Try to choose a big calendar that you will see every day when you3. Next, you think of a goal of some kind. It can be something4- like getting into a good school-or something small like eating something healthy for lunch.

Every day, after you do something that gets you5 to your goal, you can put a big ""X" on that day on the calendar. The6is that every day, you should try to do something that will help you meet your goal. Even small7 , like taking five minutes to exercise or8 a book, still count as(算作)"non-zero days". But if you9a day, you have to put a "0" on that day on the calendar and start over. The goal, of course, is to have no "zero days".

So as you can see, just10one small thing every day can make a big difference over time. Can you try to have no more" zero days"?

Tom is a confident boy. He likes playing baseball. He practices a lot in his backyard(后院). He has always wanted to be a great batter(击球手).

One day, after gathering his baseball equipment(装备), Tom went to practice in the backyard again.

"I'm the greatest baseball player in the world, " he said confidently before he started.

Then he threw the ball in the air, swung(挥舞) and missed.

But he didn't give up. He picked up the ball, said to himself, " I'm the greatest player ever!" and threw it into the air once more. He swung at the ball, but once again he missed.

He stopped for a while to rest and think. Then once again he threw the ball into the air and said, "I'm the greatest baseball player who has ever lived. "He swung the bat as hard as he could, but unluckily, he missed the ball again.

Wow!" he cried out. "What an amazing pitcher(投手) I am!"

We will often run into situations(情况) in life where we fail. But if we can have a sense of humor about it and make fun of ourselves a bit, like Tom did, we can get through hard times.

A long way to Mars

When Alyssa Carson was 3, she said that she wanted to become an astronaut and go to Mars(火星). Over the next 17 years, she worked hard for her dream. Carson is 20 now-and in the year 2033, her dream may come true. By that time, she hopes to become a NASA(美国航空航天局) astronaut and fly to the red planet. Ghosts of our loved ones

Many people think things like ghosts(鬼魂) and death are scary. But in fact, we just had a festival celebrating(庆祝) these things.

Every year, on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历), we celebrate Zhongyuan Festival, or Ghost Festival. It is on Aug 22 this year. On this day, families light lanterns to help dead people find their way home. But at the same time, living people don't want to stay out at night during Ghost Festival. They believe ghosts may hurt them.

Ghost Festival and Tomb-Sweeping Day, or Qingming Festival are both holidays that honor(对……表示尊敬) the dead. During Ghost Festival, the spirits(灵魂 ) of all dead people are honored. But we only honor our dead family members at Qingming. People believe the spirits of the dead would come back to Earth during Ghost Festival, but not during Qingming.

In Chinese culture, death is a scary and heavy thing. People are mostly afraid of it. But in some other cultures, death is a less gloomy(阴郁的) thing.

In the US, people remember the dead on Halloween. But they make it a fun festival. People wear scary clothes. Children do fun things, like trick-or-treating.

In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time for the living to connect(连接) with the dead. They make dolls of the dead and tell stories about them. There are also parties at night.

Whether you like it or not, death is a part of life. Understanding death can help us cherish(珍惜)our time here and live best lives.

Sorting trash is good for us

Take a look at the trash bins outside of your house.But this isn't just for fun-those colors tell you how you should sort(分类) your trash.

. There is household trash-things like banana peels and leftover(剩下的) food. There's harmful trash, such as batteries.It's important to sort these kinds of trash correctly.

We can make sure that harmful things, such as batteries, don't pollute our ground and water. We can reuse some trash, such as paper, metal, glass and old clothes, to make new things.

How do we sort trash? It's easy. You can have three bins in your home--one each for household, harmful and recycle trash.
