Not all walks need be a forced march. Here are 4 of Britain's gentlest routes, both urban trails and countryside meanderings (曲径).

The Grand Union Canal, Birmingham

Start Point: The Bordesley Centre

The original Grand Union Canal runs for 137 miles, taking you through an industrial area to discover the hidden world of canals, with narrow boats, wildlife and fishermen. Along the canal, look out for wildflowers and birdlife, and narrow boats negotiating the locks. The walk can be extended along the canal at either end to make it flexible in length.

Warley Woods, Keswick

Start point: Keswick Youth Hostel

Starting in the centre of Keswick, this walk takes you up through Castlehead Wood, the perfect place for a woodland adventure, and to a wonderful viewpoint over Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains. The route then takes you down to the lakeshore and returns across Crow Park to the market square.

Chester-le-Street, County Durham

Start point: Chester-le-Street Amateur Rowing Club

A lovely riverside walk along the banks of the River Wear, through Riverside Park and past Durham county football club. The circular route follows a curve in the river, meaning you'll have beautiful views along the way. Watch the rowers on the river or stop in the park to feed the swans and ducks. This walk is wheelchair-friendly.

Hathersage Flower Meadows (草地),Derbyshire

Start point: Hathersage Railway Station

There are attractive views to be appreciated throughout this scenic walk and two sites of protected meadow offer a real treat to summertime walkers. Fans of the works of great masters, like Charlotte Bronte, will enjoy spotting several places that are closely associated with the authors.

  1. (1) What can you do in Warley Woods?
A . Enjoy mountain scenery. B . Walk along the canal. C . Go boating on the lake. D . Do shopping in the park.
  2. (2) What is special about Chester-le-Street?
A . It is attractive to shoppers. B . It is available to the disabled. C . It is friendly to foreign tourists. D . It is popular with football fans.
  3. (3) Which place do literature lovers prefer?

If you're looking for a reason to care about tree loss, this summer's record-breaking heat waves might be it. Trees can lower summer daytime temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit(华氏度), according to a recent study. But tree cover in US cities is shrinking. A study published last year by the US Forest Service found that we lost 36 million trees annually from urban and rural communities over a five-year period. If we continue on this path, "cities will become warmer, more polluted and generally more unhealthy for inhabitants," said David Nowak, a senior US Forest Service scientist and co-author of the study. Nowak says there are many reasons our tree cover is declining, including hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, insects and disease. But the one reason for tree loss that humans can control is sensible development.

"We see the tree cover being changed, which means when we look at the photographs, what was there is now replaced with a parking lot or a building," Nowak said. "Every time we put a road down, we put a building and we cut a tree or add a tree, it not only affects that site, it affects the region." The study placed a value on tree loss based on trees' role in air pollution removal and energy conservation.

Nowak says there's a downside to trees too, such as pollen allergies or large falling branches in storms, "and people don't like sweeping leaves." But, he says, there are ways cities and counties can manage trees to help communities thrive. Urban forests especially need our help to replace fallen trees. Unlike rural areas, it is very difficult for trees to repopulate themselves in a city environment with so much pavement and asphalt(沥青). "A lot of our native trees can't actually find a place to drop a seed so they can regenerate," explains Greg Levine, co-executive director for Trees Atlanta. "That's why the community has to go in and actually plant a tree because the areas just aren't natural anymore."

Nowak says the first step is caring for the trees on your own property. "We think we pay for our house, and so we must maintain it. But because we don't pay for nature, we don't need to. And that's not necessarily true."

  1. (1) Why does the author mention "trees can lower summer daytime temperatures" ?
A . To tell the temperatures in summer are high. B . To introduce the topic. C . To tell trees are helpful. D . To explain the reason of tree loss.
  2. (2) How can humans control tree loss according to Nowak ?
A . Improve climate to let trees grow. B . Prevent fires form damaging trees. C . Develop cities in reasonable ways. D . Decrease insects in citites.
  3. (3) Why forests in cities need our help ?
A . Because trees in urban areas can't regenerate naturally. B . Because native trees don't drop seeds any more. C . Because trees don't grow in a city environment. D . Because humans want to plant more trees.
  4. (4) What is the purpose of this passage ?
A . Describe the importance of trees in cities. B . Show the number of trees in the US is declining. C . Ask people to plant trees with the author. D . Appeal people to protect trees in their surroundings.

Sky Drive Inc. conducted a successful test drive of its new flying car on August 25 at the Toyota Test Field, one of the largest in Japan and home to the car company's development base. The car, named SD-03, manned with a pilot, took off and circled the field for about four minutes. It was the first public demonstration for a flying car in Japanese history.

"We are extremely excited to have achieved Japan's first-ever manned flight of a flying car in the two years since we founded SkyDrive... with the goal of commercializing such aircraft," CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said. "We want to realize a society where flying cars are an accessible and convenient means of transportation in the skies and people are able to experience a safe, secure, and comfortable new way of life."

The SD-03 is the world's smallest electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle and takes up the space of about two parked cars, according to the company. It has eight motors to ensure "safety in emergency situations". "In designing an unexplored, new type of transportation known as the flying car, we chose the keyword ‘progressive' for inspiration," Design Director Takumi Yamamot said. "We wanted this vehicle to be futuristic, charismatic and desirable for all future customers, while fully including the high technology of SkyDrive."

The company hopes to make the flying car part of normal life and not just a product. More test flights will occur in the future under different conditions to make sure the safety and technology of the vehicle meet industry standards.

The success of this flight means that it is likely that the car will be tested outside of the Toyota Test field by the end of the year. The company will continue to develop technologies to safely and securely launch the flying car in 2023. However, no price has been announced so far.

  1. (1) What's the feature of SD-03?
    A . Green and energy-saving. B . Secure and multi-function. C . High-tech and user-friendly. D . Expensive and unmanned.
  2. (2) What do Takumi Yamamot's words imply?
A . They are the pioneer of flying cars. B . Flying cars will soon be commercialized. C . Flying cars will set a new trend in society. D . They target flying cars on high-end consumers.
  3. (3) What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A . Flying cars fail to reach industry standards. B . Flying cars will be sold at affordable prices. C . The safety of flying cars needs strengthening. D . Tests are now limited to the Toyota Test Field.
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the text?
A . Flying cars will be on the market by 2023. B . Flying cars are no longer just a flight of fancy. C . SkyDrive's SD-03 is the flying car of tomorrow. D . SkyDrive demonstrates its first piloted flying car.

With climate change and overfishing threatening our oceans, it is becoming increasingly important for researchers to closely observe and check sea animals and plants. However, it's almost impossible to make it since human presence scares the animals. Now, thanks to the robot, SoFi, researchers may be able to solve the problem.

Built by MIT's laboratory, the snow-white remote-controlled robot simulates (模仿) fish, complete with a flexible tail that moves from side to side and two "fins".

When the robot is under the sea, a motor is pumping water into a pair of balloon-like rooms located in the robot's tail. These rooms operate like the key parts of engines. As one room expands, the tail bends to one side; when the motor pushes water to the other channel, the tail bends in the other direction. Thus the robot gains the ability to move to where it wants to go.

SoFi solves many of the issues that have affected the usefulness of previous robots—some types of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

AUVs traditionally often have had to be tied to a boat because radio frequency communications do not work well underwater, so researchers use sound waves. The new technology can travel greater distances, allowing drivers, by using a controller, to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away. SoFi can move in the ocean, unaffected by ropes. Also limiting traditional AUVs' usefulness is the risk of hitting something, like hard stones. With the outside made of rubber and plastic that can keep its built-in electronics dry, SoFi can efficiently avoid hitting, so it is more likely to survive a potential crisis.

During test dives in Rainbow Reef, SoFi swam alongside the unsuspecting ocean life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, obtaining high-quality photos and videos. More importantly, it was able to do so without causing any disturbance.

Researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strange-looking robot in curiosity, while at other times they appeared to completely ignore its existence. "It's not perfect, but we're improving it. Our efforts will pay off," says Robert Katzschmann.

  1. (1) Why is the robot Sofi created?.
A . To observe climate change. B . To help to monitor sea creatures. C . To catch fish and observe them. D . To prevent overfishing in oceans.
  2. (2) What's Paragraph 3 mainly written to show?
A . The shape of SoFi. B . The application of SoFi. C . The structure of SoFi's tail D . The theory of SoFi's movement.
  3. (3) The materials for Sofi's outside help it to_____________.
A . Stay safe underwater. B . Avoid hitting sth efficiently. C . Survive a potential crisis under the sea. D . Better observe and check sea creatures.
  4. (4) What's Robert Katzschmann's attitude towards SoFi?
    A . Satisfied. B . Negative. C . Hopeful. D . Neutral.

It is believed that raisins (葡萄干) were discovered in the Middle East, where they were treasured. Any food that wouldn't spoil in the hot sun was very valuable. Prehistoric drawings in France show that raisins have been enjoyed in southern Europe for thousands of years. In 1000 B. C. the Jews paid their taxes with raisins. Two jars of raisins in ancient Rome could buy one slave boy.

In North America, the original mistake of leaving grapes to wither (枯萎) on the vine was not the only time raisins accidentally became popular. In the 1870s many people were growing grapes in California. Most Americans had never heard of raisins at that time. In September, 1873 a severe heat wave struck the area. Before the growers could pick all their grapes, they withered on the vine. The grapes were lost. One grower took the dried grapes to a grocer in San Francisco. The new accidental raisins grew into a major industry in California. Today almost all the raisins eaten in the United States are grown in California. California produces a third of the world's raisins.

Raisins also provide potassium, magnesium, calcium and certain B vitamins. Without added preservatives (防腐剂), raisins will stay fresh, delicious and nutritious if kept in a cool place. Raisins are tiny, portable and above all delicious.

A. They have been used for necklaces and as religious symbols.

B. Raisins are children's favorite snacks.

C. The grapes were either eaten as fresh fruit or were made into wine.

D. The grocer was unwilling to buy the dried grapes.

E. Raisins are high in iron, which is important to children's growing bodies.

F. Roman doctors believed raisins could cure anything from mushroom poisoning to old age.

G. The grocer's customers discovered that raisins made a delicious treat.
