On Feb. 4, Mohammad Hasher, a 17-year-old who lives in Michigan, woke up to find his 6-year-old sister, Noor, sitting on the couch wearing a fancy outfit(全套服装).

It was 8 a.m., and she wasn't in her nightclothes but instead wore dress. The first-grader also looked upset. “I asked her, 'Noor, what on earth are you doing?'” Mohammad told Huffington Post.

Noor told her brother that there was a big father-daughter dance at her school that night, and she wanted to go, but couldn't. Mohammad told the newspaper that their parents got divorced in November, and their father hasn't spoken to them since then. His absence has been really rough on the family, especially for Noor, who decided she was going to wear a dress that day anyway, even if she couldn't go to the dance.

Mohammad made an immediate decision.”I told her I'd take her,” he said. “And her face lit up! It was so cute.” later that afternoon, Mohammad took Noor shopping to make sure she looked very best that night. He bought her a new dress, socks and shoes and brought her to a salon to get hair done. That night they went to the dance and had great fun. Noor even got a box of candy when Mohammad won the title of “Best Dad” at the dance.

“The night was awesome, ” he said, “It filled my heart with happiness seeing her dance with so much joy and have fun with all of her friends.” Mohammad said her sister thanked him with a huge hug at the end of the night. Touched by the experience, he posted pictures of their sweet party on Twitter(推特):

“I got to take my baby sister to her first daddy-daughter dance the other night, ” he tweeted. “Sorry you don't have a dad but I'll always be there for you. ” The post soon spread widely with over 104,000 likes and 25,000 retweets.

China has been drinking tea since the time of Shennong, 5,000 years ago. Britain's relationship with tea is much shorter, but tea enjoys the pride as the UK's national drink. According to the UK Tea Council, British people drink an average of three cups a day or a national total of 165 million cups every day.

With figures like these, it is no surprise that time spent taking tea affects the working day in Britain. A recent survey found that 24 minutes a day are lost to making, buying and drinking tea and coffee. That is, £400 a year is lost in working hours per employee, or 190 days over a lifetime. So, should employers be worried about this lost working time, or does the tea break make up in other ways?

One argument is that caffeine(咖啡因) improves mental state: a drink of tea or coffee can make you active and focus on work.

Professor Rogers of the University of Bristol disagrees. After years of studying caffeine he sees nothing can prove that. “Workers would perform equally well if not drinking it at all,” he says. “But if they're often drinking it and then go without, they'll feel tired and won't perform well.”

Occupational Psychologist Cooper instead emphasizes the role tea breaks play in sedentary (久坐的) office life, and in building social relationships. “We need to make people more active and see other people. The tea break is one way of doing this,” says Cooper.

And Professor Rogers also points out the comfort effect of a hot drink: “We warm our hands on them on a cold day; they're comforting and play a big role in our everyday life. Whatever the caffeine's doing, I'd say these 24 minutes aren't wasted.”

  1. (1) How many minutes in a week does a British people spend on tea and coffee?
    A . 24. B . 168. C . 400. D . 1330
  2. (2) According to Peter Rogers, what happens when regular coffee drinkers stop drinking coffee?
A . Their wakefulness will be improved. B . They will stop wasting their work time. C . They will be less awake and productive. D . They perform as well as their colleagues.
  3. (3) Why might tea breaks be a problem for workplaces?
A . Workers might feel tired and be inactive. B . Mental performance might be held back. C . They waste time that could be spent working. D . Business have to pay more for tea and coffee.
  4. (4) What's Coopers' attitude towards tea break?
    A . Supportive B . Cautious C . Doubtful D . Concerned

Ways to protect eyes from screens

Too much screen time may cause serious eye strain(眼疲劳) and even a sharp decline of eyesight. That's a big problem a lot of people are faced with nowadays, especially those who work on a computer. The following tips may be helpful.

Get regular eye tests.

Experts recommend having a comprehensive eye exam every year to detect (探测) problems before they develop. During this test, you should tell the doctor how often you use your phone and your computer. Tell your doctor about it, and your eyes can be tested more accurately at that distance.

Give your eyes space

Studies on computer-related eye strain suggest that screens should be no closer than 40cm from your face. If this makes it hard for you to read, consider increasing the size of the text rather than moving the screen closer.

Take breaks

This may not always be practical if you're quite busy, but it's important not to stare directly at a screen for too long.   While surveys have shown that many office workers take no more than half an hour a day away from their computer, it's recommended that you take a 15-minute break after every two hours spent at your screen.

Staring at a screen continuously for hours on end may make it difficult for you to focus. To avoid this, many eye experts recommend the “20-20-20 rule” --looking away from your phone/computer screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The science behind his trick is that looking at objects at a distance relaxes the focusing muscle in the eye.  .

A. Exercise your eyes.

B. Give your eyes a chance to rest.

C. Make your screen more eye-friendly

D. Studies show it's an effective way to reduce tiredness.

E. You should also measure the distance from your eyes to your screen at work.

F. The closer your phone/computer screen is to your eyes, the harder they have to work to focus.

G. Make sure that you use your phone or computer in a room where the lighting is bright enough.

I used to be very fat. I didn't considerto be a burden until some of my friends started to call me “Fatty”,  was more than I could bear. I tried hard to do something about it but was unable to find an effective way(reduce) my weight. Some suggested that I should have only a meal a day, and I thought the idea was worth (try). However, it did not help make any significant progress because, being too (hunger), I tended to eat a lot more the next day. If I (skip) a dinner, I wouldn't even have the energy to get out of bed the next morning. Since such things were repeated all the time, my frustration deepened day after day.     Do you ever notice the music playing when you enter a store? No? Often it is very difficult to point out. It is similar to the music you listen to, but it is not the same. The music played in stores is changed to be more relaxing and to give you more mental energy. This style of music is called “elevator music.”

Elevator music is also referred to as Muzak. Muzak is very commonly listened to in the USA. About 1/3 of Americans will listen to Muzak for about 15 minutes a day in order to relax themselves. The music is played and contains short pauses. The most common time to hear elevator music played is between ten and eleven in the morning, and three to four in the afternoon. This is when most people are the most tired and could use the extra energy.

Elevator music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely and refreshes their brain. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is supposed to do. Studies have shown that tired office workers have more energy when Muzak is played in the background of the office. In addition, factory workers produce 13% more and shoppers buy 38% more groceries in a supermarket when listening to Muzak.

Some people do not like Muzak. They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time, but other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. Often you may recognize the songs being played. That is because many of the songs have been bought from the musicians or songwriters. Some of them do not like their music to be used for Muzak but others are happy when their songs are chosen. The top musicians that allow their music to turn into Muzak music can make up to 4 million US dollars a year. One way to another, Muzak affects everyone.
