There are plenty of things you can do right now to prepare if you live in an area where earthquakes often happen.

① Make sure each member of your family knows what to do no matter where they are when earthquakes happen:

Agree on a meeting place where you can all reunite afterward.

Find out about earthquake plans developed by children's school or day care.

Remember transportation may be affected, so keep some emergency supplies--food, liquids, and comfortable shoes, for example—at work.

② Make sure all family members know where your gas, electric and water main shutoffs are and how to turn them off if there is a leak or electrical short.

③ Find the exact position of your nearest fire and police stations and emergency medical places.

④ Talk to your neighbors--how could they help you, or you them after an earthquake?

⑤ Take Red Cross First Aid and CPR Training Course.

⑥ Make your disaster supply bag. Beyond the usual flashlights, batteries and radios, include a first-aid bag; work gloves; shoes or boots; a week's supply of medicine you or your family might need; credit card and cash; personal identification; extra set of keys; matches in a waterproof container; map of your area; phone numbers of family and other important people; copies of insurance policies and other important documents; a certain amount of water per person; three-day supply of food per person; hand tools; something for joy (toys, books, coloring books and crayons, playing cards)

⑦ Make sure bookcases, cupboards, tall furniture, and etc. stand well. Move the items which are heavy or easy to break to lower shelves. Fasten drawers and cabinet doors with latches or locks. Look for other steps you can take in your home and workplace to reduce your chances for injury and loss.

⑧ Ask about the safety of your home and/or business. It's well known that some brick buildings can fail quickly during earthquakes. A check by an engineer now can help you decide what to do so that your buildings can withstand shaking.

There are many places to go on safari in Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must be one of the world' most exciting wildlife journeys.

Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure(冒险经历), providing rides twice a day to go deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, guides and lots of support workers. They are famous for providing a great riding experience.

The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes, is more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face, it is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and nervousness rise suddenly though, as does your heartbeat, as you move closer to them.

In the evening, rides are usually at a less exciting and unhurried pace, with golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Though they are peaceful and slow, rides at this time of day are still unforgettable. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.

Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

Most of the thousands of tourists who visit Pompeii every year leave with nothing more than amazing memories. But there are some who take away a little extra – the relics themselves.

However, it seems that those visitors who have slipped a piece of the world's most important archaeological(考古的) site into their pockets have come to regret their actions.

Tourists who took relics from the ruined Roman city have been returning them to the site, saying they are cursed (诅咒).

One man wrote from Latin America saying that he and his entire family had experienced "trauma after trauma" after he took a piece of stone from Pompeii.

Massimo Osanna, a senior official at Pompeii, said he had received up to a hundred packages from across the world in recent years containing items from the site, often accompanied by letters explaining the relics had brought them bad luck.

The "curse of Pompeii" is an old story that says the eruption(火山爆发) of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which buried Pompeii, was punishment from the gods after troops ruined the buildings where people showed respect to the gods.

"At a certain point, people started believing in this story again," said Mr. Osanna. "Even proper thieves have returned things to us."

In one case, five packages were sent to Pompeii containing stolen items, including a statue that had disappeared in 1987. The accompanying letter was sent from Spain and the writer explained the statue had brought a "curse on his entire family".

However, some are affected by a strong feeling of dishonor in their heart, rather than an ancient curse. Mr. Osanna said that an English woman had recently returned around 10 mosaic tiles (镶嵌地砖) that her parents had taken while on holiday during the Seventies.

"When her mother died, she received these little pieces. But in the letter she described them as ‘uncomfortable' and said she wanted to give them back," he said.

Mr. Osanna is considering setting up an exhibition of all the letters he has received, calling it "What I brought back from Pompeii".

  1. (1) Why did some visitors who took relics away regret?
A . Because there was nothing but amazing memories. B . Because they took away the relics themselves. C . Because they thought the stolen relics brought them bad luck. D . Because they received letters from a senior official at Pompeii.
  2. (2) The underlined word "trauma" probably means "________".
A . an unpleasant and upsetting experience B . an old object or custom that reminds people of the past C . a building where people respect gods D . the things that a person or animal does
  3. (3) According to the old story, the gods were angry because________.
A . some people cursed them B . the city of Pompeii was buried C . some soldiers didn't show them enough respect D . too many buildings for people were ruined
  4. (4) Before returning the mosaic tiles, the English woman must have felt _______.
    A . ashamed B . scared C . proud D . unconcerned

Radio newsreaders and television hosts at Ireland's national broadcaster RTE are very angry at being told to pronounce words according to the Queen's English.

A report in The Irish Sun newspaper says that RTE's workers have been given an A-Z style guide of words which instructs them on how to pronounce certain words in an effort to make sure they are clearly understood. The A-Z comes with videos containing lessons of how to "properly" pronounce the "problem" words. An official at RTE told the Irish Sun that producers gave the guide to keep up standards. "The guide is there for anyone who needs it." he said, "RTE often get letters from the public over how certain words were mispronounced. The word 'issue' is a big one at the moment, people don't like how it's pronounced. There is an expectation that as the national broadcaster we are correct."

However, Irish linguistics expert Professor Raymond Hickey called the RTE's actions "internalized colonialism (内化殖民主义)". He expressed his disbelief that Irish speakers were being asked to use words with an English accent. He said: "The basic problem is RTE expects its workers to speak as if they were English. Why? We have our own form of English, which is different but fully reasonable and accepted worldwide." Professor Hickey specially talked of some examples of the words Irish hosts are being asked to pronounce with a British English accent. He said: "The Irish don't pronounce the TH [in 'birthday'] as a fricative, but as a stop with no breath…The same is true of 'news' — the Irish pronunciation is and always has been 'nooze'."
