Different countries have different ideas about manners how you behave when you are eating. In England, table manners are important. Good table manners in England are as follows:

How to sit: You should sit up straight in your chair. It is not a good idea to lean(倾斜)forwards or backwards. When you eat, you should not lean towards the plate, but bring the knife, fork or spoon towards you. At the same time, do not put your elbows on the table, nor reach over someone's plate for something.

Using your finger: English people normally don't pick food up with their fingers when they are eating main courses. If you are not sure, the safest is to use your knife or fork. There are, however, some foods that are usually eaten with fingers. They include pizza, sandwiches, burgers, crisps and fruit.

Your mouth: It is not polite to talk with your mouth full of food, or to eat with your mouth open. And if possible, do not make any noises. Never lick(舔) your plate after eating.

How much to eat: It is polite to eat the food that you have been offered, so a clear plate is a good plate. It shows that you enjoyed the food. If you can't finish everything and you need to leave a little, that's also okay. You could say something like, "That was very nice, thank you, but I'm just too full to eat another bite."

I was riding a bike when I saw a person about 250 meters ahead of me. I could tell he was riding a little slower than me and I decided to try to catch up with him. I had about a kilometer to go on the road before turning off.

I started riding faster and faster and with every block (街区). After a few minutes I was only about 100 meters behind him, so I really picked up the pace (速度) and tried my best.

Finally, I caught up with him and passed him. On the inside, I felt so good. I "beat him", but he didn't even know we were racing.

After I passed him, I found that I had missed my turn, had gone six blocks past it and had to turn around and go all the way back.

Isn't that what happens in life when we race with others, trying to outdo(超过) them or trying to show that we are more successful or more important? We spend our time and energy chasing after them and we miss out on our own way.

The problem with unhealthy competition is that it's a never-ending cycle. There will always be somebody ahead of you in one way or another. What you should do is just to run your own race and wish others well. Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.

    A . B . C .
  5. (5) What lesson does the story teach us?
A . Competition is important in life. B . Try to get better grades than others. C . Follow your own way instead of trying to get ahead of others.

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don't become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let's have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.

The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but

people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency (紧急情况) even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩动) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which encouraged good habits.

Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray (烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The "voice" of the ashtray was started by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.

One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike.

You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans inventeda kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do "high fives" with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.

  1. (1) What's the writer's attitude towards the inventions mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A . The writer finds these inventions are the strangest of all. B . he writer doubts if the inventions will be popular soon. C . The writer thinks these inventions will do good to people.
  2. (2) What can we know from the passage?
A . The father used his invention to stop children watching too much TV. B . It was very bad for the drivers to blow into a bag before their driving. C . The invention of new shoes would make players run much faster.
  3. (3) The underlined word " inflate" in the third paragraph means______.
    A . check out B . blow up C . turn over
  4. (4) Which of the following is not the invention that the writer likes ?
A . a bicycle which can cross rivers B . an ashtray which can speak to you when you light a cigarette C . a baseball cap with a built-in radio
  5. (5) What's the best title for the passage?
    A . Popular Inventions Today B . Technology and Invention C . Inventions with a Difference

Do you like eating chocolate? The answer is probably "Yes". Children and adults both love its smooth, sweet taste. But how much do you know about chocolate? September 13th is International Chocolate Day. It's a great chance for us to learn more about this special food.

Chocolate comes from an ancient civilization (文明) called the Maya. The Mayan people had a special food called cocoa. The word cocoa means "gift from God". Five hundred years ago, the Europeans found the Mayans and used cocoa to make chocolate. All this changed when European companies started to produce chocolate bar (棒) in the 19th century. Chocolate bars took off in popularity. For centuries, chocolate was eaten only by the rich. Now it's very common and there is even a chocolate museum in Cologne, Germany. Here you can find everything about chocolate.

Chocolate comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. The biggest chocolate bar ever was made in Italy in 2011 and weighed almost 6 tons! That's as big as an elephant. People often eat chocolate at Easter, or during other festivals like Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas.

Be careful not to eat too much chocolate—it's rather high in sugar and fat. The country that eats the most chocolate per person each year is Switzerland. They eat 19 pounds per person on average! People in the US eat the most chocolate in total. They get through half of the world's chocolate.

Chocolate is also used in movies. Sometimes people use chocolate to make "blood" and dirt in the movie. In the 1994 movie The Shawshank Redemption, the main character needs to crawl (爬行) through a sewer pipe(下水道). The pipe is full of terrible waste which is actually made from sweet chocolate. Isn't it interesting?
