Exciting screams of joy from two happy little girls rang across the beach. But I walked along, ignoring them. I'd come to this faraway beach on my sailboat, a place to escape. My marriage was in trouble. I worried about the harm to my two boys. But I didn't know how to make things better.

“Help! Help!” The girls screamed. I saw one girl was at the edge of the surf, yelling. I charged into the waves, swam to her and seized her. “But where is the other girl?” I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I shifted the girl Td rescued to my back. She told me the other girl was her sister. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I loved them.

I quickened my swimming and held the second little girl. We were at least 50 yards from land. I couldn't swim that far with two girls hanging on to me. But there was no time to wait. I swam as hard as I could, but the weight of the girls grew heavier with every minute. My lungs burned. I opened my mouth to take a breath, but instead swallowed water. I couldn't breathe. From behind me I felt an unbelievable force, lifting.

“Mommy!” The cry drew my attention. I looked up. An elderly man was trying to drag me out of the water. Two women were swimming toward shore. “Thank you,” one of the woman cried. “You saved my daughters.” My efforts and my struggles had paid off. I thought of that big wave, lifting me and pushing me. When my body had failed me, and when all hope was disappearing, I was given the strength I needed.

I stoop up. My family were waiting for me. There were things I could do. I just needed to make an effort. The strength would be given to me.

  1. (1) Why did the author ignore the laughter of the two girls?
A . He couldn't wait to    go sailing. B . He was missing his wife. C . The sound of waves was too big. D . He was trapped in trouble.

It's OK to say you've never heard of grime (伦敦地下音乐) - unless you're from the UK. That's because this music type was invented in the UK in the early 2000s.

To someone who's not familiar with underground music culture, it's easy to get confused between hip-hop and grime since they are both noisy. And many people didn't bother to tell them apart, until earlier this month when grime stars like Stormzy and J Hus led this year's Mobo – “music of black origin”, an award in the UK. Just like UK electronic music and hip-hop, from which grime drew influence, it mostly reflects the thoughts of young people. But different from hip-hop, grime singers sing in dialects with strong accents, giving a special flavor to their songs.

Lady Leshurr, known as the “Grime Queen”, said that she once tried to hide her accent, as she didn't want people to judge her. But one day, she realized that she didn't need to change herself just to please others. And there's no doubt that this is the soul of grime music: be yourself.

Grime has challenged modem music in its production beauty and its expressions. Also different from the hip-hop culture, which usually focuses on being rich, grime singers pay more attention to social phenomena like those who suffer from disasters and the gap between the rich and poor.

Although still quite a young music type, grime seems to be getting loved by more and more people. In 2016, the English grime artist Skepta won the Mercury Prize with his album Konnichiwa, beating big names like David Bowie and Radiohead.

However, no matter whether grime is one day accepted widely or not, one thing is for sure: in grime, singers always stay true to themselves.

  1. (1) Why is it easy to get confused between hip-hop and grime for some people?
A . They are the same in music form. B . They both make a lot of noise. C . They have a great effect on each other. D . They both developed out of electronic music.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
    A . The award. B . Hip-Hop. C . Electronic music. D . Grime.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from the passage?
A . Grime is widely accepted all over the world now. B . In grime, singers need to change themselves to please others. C . More and more people like grime because it has a long history. D . Grime singers have a strong sense of social responsibility.
  4. (4) Why does the author mention the success of Skepta?
A . To show that grime is getting more and more popular. B . To prove that grime singers stay true to themselves. C . To explain that underground music is still quite young. D . To show that Skepta has greater musical talent than David Bowie.

Think of a seed buried in a pot. It's dark down there in the potting soil. There's no light, no sunshine. So how does it know which way is up and which way is down? It does know. Seeds send shoots up toward the sky, and roots the other way. Darkness doesn't confuse them. Somehow, they get it right.

More surprisingly, if you turn a seedling (秧苗) or a whole bunch of seedlings upside down, as Thomas Andrew Knight of the Royal Society did around 200 years ago, the tips and roots of the plant will sense, “Hey, I'm upside down. Look! I. will turn my way to the right direction and do a U-turn.”

How do they know? According to botanist Daniel Chamovitz, Thomas Knight about 200 years ago guessed that plants must sense gravity. Knight proved it with a crazy experiment involving a spinning plate.

He attached a bunch of plant seedlings onto a disc. The plate was then turned by a water wheel powered by a local stream at a speed of 150 revolutions (旋转) per minute for several days.

If you have been at an amusement park in a spinning teacup, you know that because of centrifugal force (离心力) you get pushed away from the center of the spinning object toward the outside.

Knight wondered, would the plants respond to the centrifugal pull of gravity and point their roots to the outside of the spinning plate? When he looked, that's what they'd done. Every plant on the disc had responded to the pull of gravity, and pointed its roots to the outside. The roots pointed out, and the shoots pointed in. So Thomas Knight proved that plants can and do sense the pull.

  1. (1) How does the author write about the young seedling in Paragraph 2?
A . By describing vividly. B . By giving examples. C . By telling stones. D . By asking questions.
  2. (2) What determines the direction that the plant choose?
    A . Soil. B . Sunshine. C . Darkness. D . Gravity.
  3. (3) What did Knight's experiment prove?
A . Plants have their own desires. B . Plants can feel the pull. C . Speed influences plants' growing. D . Plants can grow quickly by doing a U-turn.
  4. (4) Where can this passage most probably be found?
    A . In a book review. B . In a lifestyle magazine. C . In a scientific report. D . In an official document.

How to listen in English exams

Listening is an important but difficult part for middle school students in English exams. The following suggestions may benefit you a lot.

Relax yourself.

Before listening, it's necessary to have a peaceful state of mind.  If that doesn't work, drinking some water or washing your face with cold water may help you to some extent.

As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about anything else. While listening, you can also recall(回想)the related knowledge in common with the material concerned, such as the vocabulary about the subject or topic, which is beneficial to your better understanding.

    Grasp the main idea.

Sometimes the monologue, dialogue or conversation you're listening to is a little bit longer than you expect. And it's normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don't need to understand it completely.

    Ignore the new words.

Without doubt, there usually exist unfamiliar words in listening materials. In fact, it's almost impossible for you to know or understand all the words in the listening material sometimes.  It's mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening.

Develop the habit of taking notes.

In the course of listening, it's a good habit to write down the content and leave out the unimportant details.  By taking notes, we can remind ourselves of the key points.

A. Concentrate on listening.

B. The more words you memorize, the better it is.

C. Feeling nervous or worried is harmful and unnecessary.

D. What you need to do is turn a deaf ear to the new words.

E. Make a list of what you think is important while listening.

F. Instead, just pay attention to the key points and general ideas.

G. If you feel nervous or anxious, try taking a deep breath to calm yourself down.
