At the age of ten, I hated a girl. She liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week, her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn't a good student; I talked too much; I was lazy and so on. Finally, I became very angry. I cried and ran to my father.

After listening to me, he asked, "Are the things she said true or not? Lyn, do you ever think what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and see what are true."

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found that half the things were true. I couldn't change some of them (like being very thin), but I could change most of them. Suddenly, I wanted to change.

I showed the list to Dad. He didn't take it. "That's just for you，" he said, "You know better than anyone else the truth (真相) about yourself. But you have to learn to listen. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be helpful to you. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know. It is the right thing to do."

Dad's advice has came to my mind at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice than this one.

Taking care of pets can be a great way to teach children responsibility, but it's important to be realistic (现实的). If you're keen on bringing an animal into your home and you've designed a plan for its proper care, here are some choices.

FISH

First­time owners should consider getting cold­water fish as no tank (鱼缸) heater is required. They should research what kinds of fish get along in the same tank, and be aware of life expectancy－some goldfish can live up to 20 years.

RABBITS

Though rabbits, or nickname bunnies, may seem like a lovely choice, they can live up to ten years and require an amount of care similar to that of a dog or cat. They have their special diet needs, and often don't behave well around small children. Each year, quite a lot of Easter bunnies become homeless when families feel tired of them.

GUINEAPIGS (豚鼠，荷兰猪)

These small animals are ideal starter pets. Their cages must be cleaned daily, and they require toys to keep their ever growing teeth in check. Once they're used to the new way of life, guinea pigs need daily exercise in a small room without cracks or holes for escape. They don't want to be alone, but if you get two, make sure they're the same sex or they'll have babies.

BIRDS

Fond of a fixed timetable, birds require feeding at the same time each day. Cages should be cleaned daily and disinfected (消毒) weekly. Birds clean themselves by bathing in dishes of water and grow in cages big enough to spread their wings and fly a short time.

Once, there was a forest where all the animals lived happily together. One day, a family went to spend the day in the forest, and the son left his socks there. After the family left, a bear came by, found the socks, and decided to try them on. They fit so well, and he liked them so much that he wouldn't take them off.

All the animals talked about the bear's new look. Soon, in that forest, there began appearing squirrels in shirts, rabbits in shoes, and even rats (老鼠) wearing hats! The forest doctor shook his head, telling animals, "This can't be good. Animals don't need clothes！" But no one listened to him. They said he was just out of fashion.

However, it wasn't long before the first results of fashion­fever came. Several times, the squirrel caught his shirt on trees, stopping him in mid­jump and sending him falling to the ground from a tree. The rat couldn't go into his hole without taking off his hat first. Even the bear, because of his socks, slipped(滑到) from the river rock and almost killed himself.

When the animals came to see the doctor, he gave them all the same advice, "Take off those clothes before one day they're going to kill you." Those who listened to the doctor's advice stopped having accidents. And the animals realized that they didn't need clothes at all. Starting to wear them had been very dangerous, and they had only done it to make others admire them, and to get attention.

Malls (购物中心) are popular places for Americans to go to.

They shop until they visit hundreds of stores.

They feel safe because malls have police stations. Parking is usually free. And the weather inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest places with waterfalls and large green trees.

The largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota. It covers 4. 2 million square feet.There are parking spaces for 12，750 cars. About 750，000 people shop there every week.

The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina Minnesota. People love doing all their shopping in one place. More malls are built around the country. Now malls are town centers where people come to do many things. They shop, and of course, they also eat in food courts (广场) that have food from all over the world.Some people even get their exercise by doing the new sport of "mall walking". Others go to malls to meet friends.

In some malls, people can see a doctor and even go to the church. In other words, people can do almost everything in malls.

Dale is an active boy. He likes all kinds of sports, especially mountain climbing. He hopes to go climbing this weekend.

Wang Fang will study in Australia next term. She'd like to make some Australian friends.

Jack wants to sell his house. It has three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bath room. It's near a subway station.

There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play.you plan trips, picnics, movies and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.

What you can doto give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.
