How to Study Smarter, Not Harder

Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:

Recite As You Study

Reciting—-saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening.

It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.

Take Fuller Notes

Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.

Study the Middle

The best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.

Sleep On It

Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you have just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.

Combine(结合) Memory and Understanding

There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote (死记硬背). Ideas are best learned by understanding.

The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.

  1. (1) You can notice your mistakes by ______.
A . speaking things out aloud B . studying the middle C . taking notes D . sleeping on it
  2. (2) When taking notes, you should ______ to better help you with reading.
A . underline important notes B . write as quickly as possible C . write notes in your own words D . take down every detail
  3. (3) Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?
A . Thinking about an idea in different ways. B . Going back to what first made you confused and start again. C . Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know. D . Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.

She Walked Through Fire

On Thanksgiving weekend, the Heffelmire family gathered for a meal at their home. After dinner, the family went down to the finished basement to relax except Charlotte's father, Eric, who was in the garage to fix his truck.

Around 8 p.m., Charlotte decided to check on her dad. She walked through the kitchen. When she opened the side door to the garage, black smoke rose up into the kitchen. She could barely make out her father lying on his back, trapped under the truck. He'd removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack (千斤顶). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.

Charlotte ran to the front of the truck and struggled to lift it. Eric was still conscious, and he yelled, "You got it! One more try!" She tried again and was able to tip the truck backward just enough for her to pull her dad by the shirt with both hands from under the truck.

She dragged him across the garage and 20 feet down the driveway. Then she ran back to the garage, which had burst into flames. "I was afraid the car was going to explode," says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal (油门). The car slowly rolled out, the metal wheel scratching loudly against the concrete.

Safely on the driveway, Charlotte stopped the truck and ran back to the basement. "There's a fire! Everybody get out!" she yelled as she picked up her three-month-old niece and ran out. Outside, she handed the baby to her mom, and then ran around to the burning garage. She picked up a garden hose (水管) and sprayed the fire while calling 911.

A few minutes later, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Charlotte was treated for second-degree burns on both her feet and face. Her dad had injuries on his chest and shoulders, as well as minor burns on his face. The garage and the house were damaged but the family survived.

The Heffelmires are staying in an apartment while their house is rebuilt. "Charlotte is a remarkable kid," says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says," I was saving my family and my house. I wasn't going to let my dad die."

I've been really lucky this year. Not only did I have the opportunity to live in France, but I was able to see some other countries with my girlfriend. Now she is studying in Essen, a large city in Western Germany. I recently went to stay with her—-it was my first visit to Germany! Essen is a very large city. It has all the conveniences of any large city so I felt immediately at home. I love the variety of shops, restaurants, shopping malls, cocktail bars, nightclubs, parks and even a lake. There is also a city-wide network of trams (有轨电车), which makes getting around a piece of cake!...

I found the people to be really friendly, and most Germans speak very good English, which made life easy for me. I was surprised by the casual attitude to alcohol in Germany, where it seems normal for people to drink beer on the street or on the tram. My girlfriend and I visited two famous local cities. Dusseldorf and Cologne, which are both on the Rhine River. Dusseldorf is an urban metropolis with a great variety of restaurants. We took a boat tour on the river and went up the Rhine tower, a really tall building which offers great views across the city. Cologne, as you might know, is world famous for its perfumes. The cathedral (大教堂) there is an unmissable landmark. We made the effort to climb to the top of one of the cathedrals tower, The spiral(螺旋的)stairs seemed endless, but it was worthwhile for the impressive sights from the top.

We also went in a cable car over the river and tasted a German delicacy called "Spaghettieis" which is ice cream with strawberry sauce! I also got to try the famous German sausage. I must admit, I really enjoyed the food! The only disappointment was the grey and rainy weather, which proves that Britain does not have the worst weather in Europe!

  1. (1) Why did the writer feel lucky this year?
A . He will have a chance to live in Germany. B . He met his girlfriend in France by chance. C . He got an opportunity of learning in Germany. D . He was able to live in France and visit other countries.
  2. (2) What do Dusseldorf and Cologne have in common?
A . They are both famous for unique perfumes. B . They both serve traditional German sausage. C . They both have many towers with a long history. D . The both offer wonderful views from the tower top.
  3. (3) According to the writer, which country has the worst weather in Europe?
    A . Britain B . Italy C . Germany D . France
  4. (4) What can be the best title of the passage?
A . Mt first visit to Germany B . A Brief Introduction of Germany C . A Guide to the Germany D . An Unforgettable Trip

Mike Flint was Buffett's airplane pilot(飞行员). Flint had also flown four US Presidents, so we can safely say he was good at his job. According to Flint, he was talking about his career(事业) priorities (优先事项) with Buffett when he asked him to go through a 3-step exercise.

STEP 1: Write down his top 25 career goals(目标). So, Flint took some time and wrote them down.

STEP 2: Review his list and circle his top 5 goals. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list, and at last decided on his 5 most important goals.

STEP 3: At this point, Flint had two lists. The 5 items he had circled were on List A and the 20 items he had not circled were on List B.

Flint said that he would start working on his top 5 goals right away. And then Buffett asked him about the second list, "And what about the ones you didn't circle?"

Flint replied, "Well, the top 5 are my primary focus (焦点), but the other 20 come in a close second. I still plan to give them my efforts."

Buffett said, "No. You've got it wrong. Everything you didn't circle just became your Avoid-At-All-Cost list. These things get no efforts from you until you've succeeded with your top 5."

This is why Buffett's strategy (策略) is great. Items 6 through 25 are things you care about. So you can't help paying attention to them. And then you get 20 distractions (分心的事物) to stop you from focusing on(集中) your top 5 goals. Spending time on secondary priorities is the reason you have 20 half-finished goals instead of 5 completed ones. So force yourself to focus. The most dangerous distractions are the ones you love, but that don't love you back.

  1. (1) What did Flint think of his items on List B?
A . They were important too. B . They were much more difficult. C . They were not worth his effort. D . They were impossible goals to reach.
  2. (2) What did Buffett suggest to Mike Flint?
A . Giving up List B halfway. B . Choosing only one priority from the 25 items. C . Paying no attention to List B before finishing List A D . Reviewing all the items and deciding on another top 5.
  3. (3) According to Buffett's strategy, .

    A. getting 20 half-finished goals is useful too

    B. we should break away from distractions decidedly

    C. it's impossible for us to finish two tasks at a time

    D. secondary priorities will prevent us from succeeding

  4. (4) What can be the best title for the passage?
A . List A or List B? B . How to choose your priorities C . The secret of Buffett's great success D . Avoid distractions to focus on your priorities

However, other students prefer travel alone. That's why they can arrange their time freely and choose to visit their favorite tourist spots. What's more, it's a chance for us to learn to look after themselves.
