Giving is one of the main ways of understanding the value of money—but it often gets ignored. When we pay close attention to what we want for Christmas or birthdays and spending lots of money on our loved ones, why not take the time to teach your sons or daughters a little bit about giving back? Here are 4 activities which can help your children know what is the real meaning of "giving".

    Donating (捐赠)Online

Because your children have seen all the fun and games from the charity organization Children in Need fundraising, it's the perfect time to show them how easy it is to donate money to charity online and how rewarding this can be. If they have a go Henry card, they can even do this themselves directly using their own money earned from playing the games that develop intelligence (智力).

    Time: Saturday every week

    Giving Things to Charity

Giving their extra things to charity can help kids see how much value their things have. Explaining the money from selling their things and helping others can make them feel how lucky they are.

    Time: Sunday every week

    Volunteering within the Community (社区)

Whether it's clearing rubbish from a park or visiting the elderly, volunteering is certainly the most direct way for your children to understand what we mean when we say "giving". This really helps understand the value of giving some of their time.

    Time: Monday every summer vacation

Getting Them to Actively Raise Money for Something

Help them discover something they really care about and get their mind set on how they could raise some money for people in need. Making cakes and selling them at school, selling some of their own things or even washing the neighbors' cars are great ways in which children can make a difference to something they care about.

    Time: Tuesday every winter vacation

  1. (1) Who is the text mainly written for?
    A . Guides. B . Parents. C . Teachers. D . Tourists.
  2. (2) What is special about Donating Online?
A . It is held every day. B . It allows selling cakes online. C . It requires volunteers' ID cards. D . It accepts the money earned from playing games.

I'd been at Camp Eggleton for only two days before I got my nickname(绰号) , Screaming Toad(尖叫的蛤蟆).

When we were on our first nature walk, a tree frog dropped onto my shirt from the branches above. I screamed. I didn't even know I could make a sound like that. Most kids laughed it off and forgot about it. But Stan wouldn't let it go.

Three days later, Mr. Matt told us we would play a game. The two-person team to find the most treasures hidden in the woods gets something cold. Thoughts of ice cream froze on our brains.

Mr. Matt started reading off pairs of names. My nerves(神经) got completely fried when he said, "And finally, Jay and Stan. "

"If the mosquitoes(蚊子) are biting you, just ask Screaming Toad to eat them for you. " Stan called to the group. One kid laughed, but most of them were already concentrating on looking for treasures.

Then I had an idea, "You know, Stan, if we split up, we'll have a better chance of finding stuff. " Stan shrugged (耸肩)and walked down the path alone.

Ten minutes later, I heard something that reminded me of myself a few days ago. I ran toward the sound. Stan was jumping around like a monkey, screaming and yelling: "Ants! Ants!"

I led him into a mud puddle(泥坑). He was surprised at first then he must have realized why I was doing it. The itch(痒) was going away and so were the ants.

"I guess you're going to have a pretty good story for everyone later. "Stan said worriedly.

"Yeah, I guess so. You'll probably be known as Dancing Ant from now on. "

That night, we all sat around the campfire. I could see Stan's worry as clear as daylight. He was waiting for it. But I never said anything. I knew how it felt to be laughed at.

The next day was Game Day. When I was picked for a basketball team, someone called, "No fair! Screaming Toad's a natural Jumper!"

Stan yelled out, "Knock it off. His name is Jay. "

  1. (1) Why did Jay get his nicknames?
A . He signed up for Camp Eggleton. B . He shouted loudly when the frog fell on his clothes. C . Stan gave him the nicknames because of his bravery. D . The other boys thought it cool to be called like that.
  2. (2) Which word can replace the underlined phrase "split up" in Paragraph 6?
    A . United. B . Separated. C . Apologised. D . Shared.
  3. (3) Why did Jay bring Stan to the mud puddle?
A . To make Stan calm down. B . To give him a chance to say sorry. C . To drive away the ants and the itch. D . To prevent Stan from hurting himself.
  4. (4) What can we learn from the story?
A . Actions speak louder than words. B . Everyone's efforts are very important. C . A good beginning makes a good ending. D . Don't do to others what you don't want done to yourself.

The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.

David Tilman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized(工业化), the population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk of non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease.

Unfortunately when people adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one per cent to 10 per cent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.

And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical(热带的) areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gases in the future from agriculture than those coming out of all forms of transportation right now.

Mr Tilman calls the link between the diet, the environment and human health "a trilemma": a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible settlement is leaving the Western diet behind.

  1. (1) We can infer from the passage that________.
A . Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases B . Overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases C . The examined information comes from developing countries D . Industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet
  2. (2) According to the passage, more greenhouse gases might be given off in the future from________.
    A . transportation B . developing countries C . agriculture D . developed countries
  3. (3) David Tilman believes that________.
A . The diet, the environment and human health are closely connected B . The Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes C . People in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease D . Traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet
  4. (4) What's the main purpose of writing the passage?
A . To call on us to protect the environment. B . To warn us of the danger of the Western diet. C . To remind us of the importance of health. D . To advise us to have a balanced diet.

Electrical devices(仪器)could soon use power made by human energy. Scientists say they have developed an experimental device that produces electricity from the physical movement of a person walking , British scientist Max Donelan and other scientists in Canada and the United States developed the device.

The device connects to a person's knee. As the person walks , the device captures energy each time the person slows down. To do this , the device helps with the slowing down movement of the leg, the movements of the walking person push parts of a small machine that produces electricity. Using the device, an adult walking quickly could produce thirteen watts of electricity in just a minute. Donelan says walking at that speed could produce enough power to operate a laptop computer for six minutes.

There are several possible uses for the device. Developers say it could help people who work in areas without electricity to operate small computers. The device could also be used in hospitals to operate heart pacemakers(起博器), it could even be used to assist in the movement of robotic arms and legs.

The experimental version of the device weighs about one and a half kilograms, but it is too costly for most people to buy, but the researchers hope to make a lighter, less costly version. An improved version should be ready in one year.

The developers hope the device will one day help developing countries; nearly twenty five percent of people around the world live without electric power.

A similar product was invented in 2005 by Larry Rome of the University of Pennsylvania, He created a bag carried on a person's back that also produces power from walking. The knee device does not produce as much electricity as the bag, but the bag requires the walker to carry a load of twenty to thirty kilograms.

  1. (1) The second paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A . who developed the device B . how the device works C . several possible uses for the devices D . how much electricity the device can produce
  2. (2) What is the disadvantage of the experimental version of the device?
A . It is too heavy for the walker to bear B . It is too complex for people to use C . It is too expensive for most people to afford D . It will slow down one's walking speed
  3. (3) Compared with the device designed by Larry Rome, this new device ________.
A . produces power without adding more loads to the walker B . can produce more power in a much shorter time C . needs to be equipped with a battery D . can help the walker walk faster
  4. (4) What would be the best title for the passage________.
A . First device powered by walking will soon be on the market B . Advanced technology brings in a new way to operate heart pacemakers C . Device gives new meaning to the idea of power walking D . Human energy will become a main source of electricity

How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and Strong

Are you new to experiencing relationships? Well, let me give you advice on having a healthy and possibly long-term relationship.

Be an honest person with them. Don't be afraid to say things that isn't very flattering about yourself. Getting them to trust you is the most important element in any relationship. If there's no trust, there's nothing there. So please be honest and they'll learn to open up to you.

Make sure you give them respect. Now respect isn't just simply treating her or him nicely. There's a lot more to it. You have to learn to adjust to their liking. Don't just think about yourself, think about what your partner needs out of it as well.

Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positivity at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. This is an important step in a relationship. Your partner has to be able to count on you when needed.

Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but it's the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive.

Make sure the communication is good. This goes along with trust, but always communicate how you feel, even if it's something that upsets you. Instead of screaming, talk to them. It's important to communicate this to them, not keep it bottled up.

A. Show them your personality.

B. Do not hide things from them, do not lie.

C. Make sure you are encouraging to your partner.
