Summer vacations should be relaxed for students. However, many of them use the chance to take part in summer project.
Xu Dan, a 15-year-old girl, loves vacations because it means she can spend more time volunteering. She believes that volunteering has acts instead changed her life and made her a better person.
Two years ago, Xu was a shy girl. One day, she saw a group of volunteers picking up trash in the street. Since she had no plans for the summer vacation and wanted to make some friends, she decided to join them.
"I used to think volunteering was just picking up trash. Now I know that the aim of volunteer work is helping others and gaining self-esteem(自尊), "Xu says. Her volunteering schedule is full: teaching children English from Mondays to Fridays, picking up trash on Saturdays, and visiting old people on Sundays.
For Xu, visiting old people is the most meaningful activity. "I help them clean their homes and cut their hair. I talk to them and listen to their life stories. These are just small things, but every time I help others I feel more confident about myself," Xu says.
According to Xu, the positive energy(正能量) from volunteering influences the way she deals with people and sees the world. "I can see things from other people's point of view and look at things more positively(乐观). I think I'm going to keep it all my life." she says.

Safe Travel Abroad
Preparing to go traveling abroad can be really stressful, especially if you don't know what to expect. Here is a list of important things to remember, so you know exactly what you need to do before you take off.
What vaccines(疫苗) do I need?
Go to your doctor for advice as soon as you know you're going traveling. He will know what vaccines you will need and will be able to advise you on when you need to have them. Remember some vaccines need to be given months ahead, so make sure you book an appointment as early as possible.
Do I need a visa(签证)?
It's important that you have the correct official documents for traveling abroad. If you don't have the necessary paperwork, you might be refused entry. You'll need to check that your passport hasn't been out of date, either.
How do I arrange travel insurance(保险)?
Travel insurance is really important. It can protect you in different kinds of situations, such as if you need medical treatment or if your flights are canceled. I Travel insurance can be arranged easily online or over the phone, but you can always turn to your local travel agency. Travel agents will also be able to advise you on what you are insured against.
Turn on the tap (水龙头) and the water comes out. Getting water is so 1that you may think that there is an endless supply (供应量) of it. But it is not true. 70% of the earth is covered by water, 2 most of the water is salt water, leaving only a small percent of fresh drinking water. Some 3 including Italy, Spain and South Africa even buy water from other countries.
Each person in the UK uses about 150 liters of water a day. However, each person in some countries4uses 5-10 liters of water a day. We should help save water. Let's have a look at 5 you can help:
Don't leave the water running while brushing teeth. We brush our teeth twice a day and by turning the tap off when we brush, we6 save 5-10 liters of water.
Don't use the toilet7 a wastebasket. Every time you flush (冲) used paper, waste food or other small bits of rubbish, 8 water is used.
Make use of 9 Collect rainwater in water buckets (桶) in your garden and use it to water your plants.
Reuse. Share bathwater with your family to reduce costs and water use. Or, set yourself a challenge to 10your shower time by 1 or 2 minutes.
Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for birds, other animals and many different plants.
It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature. He had seen some red-tail hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.
Suddenly it was announced that the "empty" land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds.
When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.
Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had down about the area, and how the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.
Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older. Andrew' s teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign, who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.
In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.
Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and thus help save the environment.

How green are you? Do you know how to be green?
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.
Reduce
Reduce means "use less". Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary—or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we buy things, choose local products as possible as you can, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.
Reuse
Reuse means "use again". Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china (瓷器) cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
Recycle
Recycle means "change things into something else". Though it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and take part in recycling programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.
So please remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.
A: Welcome, Mr. Lu.
B: Thank you, Rob.
A: You study oceans.
B: There are many kinds of fish. But fishermen have caught too many of them.
A: Do you mean they are overfishing?
B: Yes.
A: That sounds a good idea. Look at this article! Garbage (垃圾) in the ocean is also a big problem.
B: Yes. I read about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Garbage collects (聚集) there because of the way the water moves.
A: Yes. It is like an island of floating (漂浮的) rubbish.
B: No. It's more like a soup. But it is full of plastic and chemicals (化学品) .
A: That sounds terrible!
B: We can! We can use less plastic and recycle more.
A: Yes!
A. What's the article about? B. How often do you go fishing? C. How many kinds of fish are there? D. Why can't we do anything about it? E. And we should keep plastic out of the ocean! F. And most of the garbage is made up of tiny pieces of plastic. G. They can catch fish but they should catch a safe number of fish. |
