When Mat was a kid, he was afraid to go to the toilet. He thought there was a little man living just under it, and he would attack(攻击) him if he was there too long. He always went as quickly as possible.
Many years later, he found that a good friend used to believe that his body was full of rice. He began to think, "Did other people have strange ideas when they were kids? "He collected their stories and wrote a book. Later he started a website to collect more stories. The website is called "I Used to Believe". Anyone can write stories there. What a funny and strange world! Here is one from Tom.
"I think I am a normal adult, but when I was five, I used to believe that the goal of parents was to kill their kids. One day, I kept crying when my father was busy. He got angry and put his hand around my neck. He wanted to quiet me. I remember thinking, 'OK, this is the end. 'Then he let me go and I thought to myself, 'I guess he won't do it now because too many people can see him."

At the age of 12, Einstein always played with a group of naughty kids. Because he was busy playing, he failed in several exams.1a weekend morning, Einstein carried a fishing net and was about to go fishing with those kids, his father 2him and said to him calmly," Einstein, you were 3too much time playing, so you failed in the exams. I'm worried about your 4with your mother."
"5are you worrying about? Jack and Robert also failed, but they went fishing6.
"My boy, you can't think like that," Looking at Einstein, his father said lovingly, "There is a story in our hometown. I hope you can listen to it 7."
"There were8cats playing on the roof. Suddenly, they fell into the chimney (烟囱). When they climbed out of the chimney, one cat's face was dirty9 the other's face was clean. Seeing the dirty—faced cat, the clean—faced one thought its own face must be10, so it quickly ran to the riverside and washed its face. The dirty-faced cat saw the clean—faced one, thinking its own face was clean as well, so it walked 11in the street."
"Einstein,12 can be your mirror. Only you are your own mirror. Some of the kids are not strict with themselves. If you take them to be your mirror, even a clever person may become stupid." Hearing this, Einstein was 13and lay down his fishing net and returned to his small room. He decided to pay more attention to his14and less attention to what his friends were doing.

This summer, thousands of visitors are walking in through a garden in the sky. It is right in the middle of New York City. They are enjoying a beautiful, new park called the High Line, which was built on old railway tracks.
After the railway was no longer used in 1980, wild plants, grass and trees began to grow between the tracks. A few people looked at this natural garden and saw something amazing. They worked to protect the area when others wanted to pull it down. Today, the High Line attracts up to 2 million visitors every year. This summer, the new part of the High Line started, almost doubling the park's size to one mile.
The design of the park is special. The new part includes many activities for children. Young people can use building toys, including wood, wheels, ropes, gears and tools, to create one-of-a kind structures(构造). The toys don't come with instructions. Instead, children use their imaginations to fashion houses, animals and machines.
"Everyone supporting the High Line project wanted the park to go around the city," says Danya Sherman, director of public programs for the Friends of the High Line. The Friends of the High Line is the group that saved the railway from pulling down. Sherman believes that public spaces such as the High Line have the power to bring communities closer.
The park also gives visitors a chance to experience nature in the city. The designers have allowed the park to keep the overgrown feeling that it had when it was an unused track. If you visit, you can see birds, butterflies and many plants that grow in the northeastern United States.
The Friends of the High Line hope to make the park even larger, over an area that is still used as a rail yard. The High Line has also inspired projects in other cities, including Philadelphia, Chicago, and Amsterdam, where people hope to build new parks on old railway tracks.
From: Tom To: Han Li Subject: Moving to Taizhou |
Dear Han Li: Good news! My father's company has sent him to work in Taizhou, so we'll move to the city. I'm excited but also a little worried. I've learnt Chinese at a Confucius school in South Africa, but I'm not good at it. How can I improve it quickly? Also, I'm really interested in Chinese festivals? Could you please introduce one of them? Thank you very much and write soon! Tom |

Dear Tom, I'm glad to hear that you will come to Taizhou, China. Han Li |
I bought two sachets(小香袋)of warm cinnamon spice(肉桂香料) while shopping today. Seeing I was fighting with my crutches(拐杖), a staff helped to push my shopping cart to the door. I gave one to him and he was really pleased.
With so many things, I decided to take a taxi to go home. The driver put my things in the big box and was really lovely with small talk.
A song came on the radio and he sang along to it. It was Stevie Nicks. He then told me that about20 years ago, he took a "Will you marry me, Stevie?" banner(横幅) to her concert. He said the band were pointing to it and laughing during the performance.
When we arrived at my house, he asked if I would be able to get the four shopping bags out of the box myself. Of course I said yes and with my strong independent nature, I said that I could manage. He was kidding though. He brought the shopping bags up to the door. As he got back into the car, something told me to gift the other sachet to him. By this stage, he was already back in his car. He rolled down the window. I told him I wasn't Stevie Nicks, but here was a gift that would make him smell sweet-smelling. He laughed and told me I was an angel (天使).
This was a lovely, fun and warm exchange. He was not smelling roses(玫瑰花), but in the Christmas season, it was much better to smell warm cinnamon spice. As for me, I would rather be an angel than Stevie Nicks, although I'm sure she's lovely.
It's early in the morning and the alarm clock has already rung several times. You have to drag yourself out of bed and rush to school, afraid of missing the first school bell.
As a school student, this is probably a common experience for you.
But thanks to new rules, many students in Zhejiang and Helongjiang provinces can now stay in bed longer than before.
On Feb 23, the Zhejiang Department of Education published a new guideline(指导方针) that asks primary schools to start school later, reported Xinhua News Agency(新华社).
According to the guideline, start times could vary among different grades and seasons, with students in Grade 1 and Grade 2 starting no earlier than 8:30 am. Some schools in Zhejiang province have been chosen to test this new guideline, which is expected to be used in other areas in 2019.
A similar guideline was announced(宣布) by the Education Department in Heilongjiang Province on Feb 24. Since the new semester began in March, students from all primary and junior high schools in the province have been repaired to arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 am.
These changes are aimed at making sure students get more sleep and enough time for breakfast. Before the guideline was published, many primary school students in Zhejiang were required to arrive at school as early as 7 or 7:30 am, which left many of them arriving feeling tired and hungry.
According to a 2016 study by the Zhejiang Department of Education, only 54.1 percent of students in Grade 4 slept nine hours or more a night, while the required sleep time for primary school students is 10 hours.
These changes have received much praise. "I am sure to welcome the move, since this will ensure my son has enough time for breakfast, which is important for his health and growth," a mother surnamed Xu from Hangzhou, whose son is a first-grade student, told China Daily.
Pushing back school times isn't unique to China. In the United States, schools in at least 21 states began to start school later in 2017, as various studies have shown that later school start times could benefit students, reported The Atlantic.
When we think summer, most of us think of fun in the outdoors. So it seems easy to lose weight over the summer. In fact, though, it's quite possible for us to put on weight. The good news is that we can avoid these problems if we know these ways.
Here are some ways to keep summer weight away.
When we don't have a plan, it's easy to spend summer moving from bed to the computer. So it is necessary to make a work or study plan, like learning a new skill or working at a job.
Because we don't have to go to school, it's easy to sleep late, watch too much TV and eat more snakes as usual. So it's necessary to make sure your summer days follow a schedule—getting up at the same time each day and eating meals as usual times.
Whenever you're free, find something special to do, like making a dinner for your family.
But remember: limit your screen time, no more than two hours a day.
If it's too hot outside or you don't like going to a gym, you can do you exercise indoors. If you love being outdoors, try swimming, running or playing soccer in the early morning or evening. Anyway, don't let the heat stop your exercise plans.
Don't eat too much meat. Choose some fresh fruit. It's better to put your focus on talking with your family and friends, not on food. Also, don't eat too many frozen things like ice cream.
A. Beat the heat B. Make a work or study plan C. Think about what to eat D. Stay busy E. Put everything in a schedule |

Dear Li Hua·
How is everything going? It has been 5 years since I came back to America. What are you like now? Are you taller than before? Are you still shy now? What other changes have happened to you? By the way, the Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou in 2022. There must be a lot of changes in Hangzhou. Can you tell me something about them? Look forward to your reply!
Best wishes to your parents.
