The government in China ended his one-child policy and let families have two children instead in 2015.
A Chinese Communist Party statement gave a number of reasons for the change in policy. The statement said the change is meant to balance population development, stop a falling birth rate(出生率)and strengthen the country's labor force(劳动力). China, with the largest population in the world, started the one-child policy in 1980. But the government allowed only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children, if the first-born is a girl.
In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child.
Jiang Quanbao, a teacher and population expert, explained how Chinese families react(反应) to the newest policy. "Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child," he said. "People in the countryside are more interested. But some of them are already allowed to have two children." At the end of 2014, China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them have jobs. But the labor market need of labor by the year 2050. With the two-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.

Hold Your Head Up High
Hold your head up high I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. from then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.
Sometimes people asked me embarrassing(使人难堪的) questions. Whenever kids played games, I was the "monster". I was always imagining that everyone looked down on(瞧不起) me. Yet mum would say to me, "Hold your head up high and face the world." I began to depend on that saying.
As a child, I thought mum meant, "Be careful, or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking." As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, People liked me.
In high school I even became the class president, but on the inside I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, "Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance(外貌)." My mum's love was the sunshine that made me bright. I had faced hard times, and learned not only to be confident(自信的) but also to have deep compassion(同情) for others. "Hold your head up high" has been heard many times in my home. I say it to my children. The gift my mum gave me will live on.

"Face it, Andy. You sold your soul the day you put on that first pair of Jimmy Choo's." That line from the movie The Devil Wears Prada is an example showing how a shoemaker has become famous in the fashion world.
Jimmy Choos (Zhou Yangjie) is a native Malaysian of Chinese origin (出身), born in 1961 into a family of shoemakers. He created his first pair of shoes at age 11. His family couldn't pay for his schooling, so he dropped out at a young age. He had to work with his father to support the family. But his dream to be a fashion designer never disappeared, so he did all he could to enter an art college and finally took up a position in the fashion world through his talent and willpower.
Choo graduated from a college in London and had a small workshop there. He hit the international fashion scene when Vogue magazine described his designs in eight pages in 1988. His work was immediately popular and got love and support from Diana, Princess of Wales.
Jimmy Choo shoes are known for their very high heels and pointed toes. However, he does some flats and lower-heeled shoes for other women. Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. with Tamara Mellon, UK Vogue editor, but left the company in 2001.
Jimmy Choo shops have opened around the world, so his designs are more accessible to those who want a designer shoe, and can afford his prices. Choo also has a website where shoppers can view his ready-to-wear designs. The brand of Jimmy Choo has been comparable to top brands, like Channel, LV, etc. But it's still young and has a bright future.
We can't imagine how hard it is for Choo to stand out in the worldwide fashion! He must have made greater efforts and had more difficulties than others. And so he did. So stop complaining about why good luck isn't always falling on you and devote yourselves to your work now.
a. He opened his shops around the world.
b. His shoes appeared in Vogue magazine.
c. He created his first pair of shoes.
d. He had his workshop in London.

Thanksgiving Day was coming. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment (作业) — to draw a picture of 1 for which they were thankful.
Most of the class might be considered poor, but still many would 2 the holiday with turkey and other traditional food of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subject of most of her students' art. And they were.
But Douglas made a(an) 3 kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher's true child of weak and unhappy. As other children played at 4, Douglas used to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain that Douglas felt behind those sad 5.
Yes, his picture was different. When he was asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a 6. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His abstract (抽象的) picture caught the 7 of his cl assmates. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers 8 turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and 9 people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went on — until the teacher almost forgot the young artist 10.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she stopped at Douglas' desk, bent down, and 11 him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, " It's yours, teacher."
She recalled the 12 when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How 13 she had said, "Take my hand, Douglas, we'll go outside." Or, "Let me show you how to hold your pencil." Or, "Let's do this together." Douglas was very 14 for his teacher's hand. Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the Douglases of the world. They might not always say thanks, but they'll remember the hand that 15 out.

Money, jewels and important documents may not be the only valuables placed in banks these days. Some mothers store their breast milk (母乳) in banks.
There are ten breast milk banks across the United States, where mothers can donate(捐赠) their extra milk for other women's babies.
Experts say breast milk is the best food for babies. The World Health Organization says it is the only food babies should get during the first six months of life, in most cases. Breast milk is especially important for babies born too early. Sometimes these premature babies must stay in the hospital for many weeks.
James Cameron is a doctor who treats newborns at Lutheran Children's Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He says breast milk is almost like medicine. Doctor James Cameron says, "The fact is that there are so many different proteins and specialized sugars in the breast milk that the mom's able to make that help provide immunity (免疫力). It's very important for the health of the newborn."
Lucy Baur lives near Fort Wayne. She breastfed both her children and always had more milk than they needed. She wanted to donate to the Indiana Mothers Milk Bank in Indianapolis. But freezing and shipping milk can be costly. Then, a donor station opened near her home.
Milk donations in the United States work like this. Donors must be willing to provide almost three liters of breast milk. They freeze the milk and take it to the station. There, employees warm the milk and mix it with other mothers' milk. Then, the milk is heated to kill bacteria. After that, the technicians test samples of all the milk to make sure it is safe and healthful. The milk is re-frozen and sent to the main milk bank. The milk bank transports the milk to hospitals to feed premature or sick babies.
Donors are tested for diseases before any milk is accepted. They are not permitted to smoke tobacco, use illegal drugs or drink too much alcohol.
Nowadays there are different ideas about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is good for social development. However, others say that competition is bad and that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death events. In their mind what they really want is going for success, the development of many others qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost on the way to success, others take an opposite opinion. Many people are strongly against competition. Among them, most are young people who have suffered from such pressure from their parents. They seem to look for failure by not trying to win or achieve success. _______________, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." They don't want to admit(承认) that if they have really tried and lost, they would mean more.
Clearly, this belief(信念) is the same as that of those who try to prove(证明) them salves. Both coms from the wrong belief that self-confidence depends on how wall one does by comparing with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. If such fear begins to be unimportant, we can have a better knowledge of competition.
