The ground we walk on seems firm, but deep under the earth and under the sea the rocks change and move. In some parts of the world there are “fire mountains”, which we call volcanoes. From time to time they burst open and throw out fire and burning ashes. These volcanoes are very dangerous.

Hong Kong does not have any volcanoes but there are many volcanoes in Indonesia and Philippines. There is also a famous mountain near Tokyo, Japan, which is a volcano too. Its name is Mount Fuji. For much of the year,it is covered with snow.

One of the most famous volcanoes which erupted in recent times was Krakatoa, on an island in Indonesia. The first explosions took place on 20th May, 1883, but the biggest eruption did not come until the 26th and 27th August of that year. The people on the island were used to the explosions by that time, and so they were completely unprepared for this terrible happening. Almost all the people on the island died and the explosion also made huge waves in the sea, which drowned (淹死) many people on the other island nearby. After the eruption was over, people saw that the whole northern part of the island had completely disappeared. Scientists say that 15 cubic (立方) kilometres of rocks and ash were thrown up in the explosion. The noise of the explosion was heard nearly 5,000 kilometres away in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and the city of Jakarta was completely dark for about two and a half hours.

Advice About Stress: Don't Let It Ruin Your Life!

There are many reasons why people suffer from stress.   We give you advice on how to find the cause or causes of your stress, and more importantly—how to deal with it.

For some, dealing with stress is a relatively simple matter, providing you really want to.  If the latter is the case, then don't refuse forms of alternative medical advice and treatment.

It can help you to perform or even OUT perform in certain situations. Athletes use it to great advantage to help them through that barrier that will put them on top! It can also help you in everyday life. However, if it is part of life's routine, then something somewhere will suffer in body or mind—or both.

One of the important factors in treating stress, is firstly admitting, accepting or even discovering that you are stressed. Only then can the causes of that stress be isolated. Harmful stress comes from a lot of causes. Our advice about stress is based upon medical facts, and of course common sense.   Getting the wrong advice can cause more harm than good.

It can be beaten in most cases, and can nearly always be controlled, or even turned to your own advantage. Firstly determine if you are stressed or suffering any form of stress—take our stress test to find out. It may surprise you! Secondly, sort out what you can actually do to relieve the causes of your stress.   Thirdly, work on a change of lifestyle or whatever needs to be done to fight the causes that you have identified.

A.Stress can also be good!

B.Getting the right advice is not always easy.

C.Stress is a totally normal function of the body.

D.Accidents are often prevented by the stress reactions.

E.Surprisingly, some suffer from stress but are not even aware that they are doing so!

F.For others, stress can be so severe that it might need medical attention.

G.Like all illnesses—and suffering from stress is an illness—prevention is always better than cure.

When the Normans built their first simple wooden castles in England, they built them on the top of small hills. The first permanent castles were made of stone and built with thick walls. The main building was usually surrounded by walls which overlooked the moat (护城河).

The entrance to the castle was usually over a drawbridge (吊桥) leading to the main gatehouse. The drawbridge could be raised or lowered and an iron grille (栅栏) could be lowered to shut off the entrance to the gatehouse.

As time went on,the castle builders became more advanced in their techniques.Instead of building a strong central building and surrounding it with walls of lesser strength, they thought out the idea of surrounding a central area with huge walls which could contain all the main rooms of the castle. These walls usually had many towers and these towers were really a series of main buildings along the castle walls. In building these castles they used hill sites whenever possible in order to give the castle a better position.Because the outside world was shut off by a barrier or curtain of defences, they are called “curtain wall” castles.

With the passing of time there was less need to build strong castles and nobles built manor (庄园) houses. These manor houses often had battlements and iron grilles, but they were built more for comfort and included many of the conveniences and luxuries of the large houses which were being built in the towns.

Unfortunately, many English castles were damaged or destroyed completely during the Civil Wars of the 1600s.

    A . A moat. B . An iron grille. C . A drawbridge. D . A central keep.

A . Most of English castles became manor houses now. B . The Civil Wars left many English castles in ruins. C . English castles were too strong to be destroyed. D . Nobles built manor houses in order to defend their fortune.

Last year I was put into a lowerlevel math class at school. The reason I was in this class had nothing to do with my intellect (智力) or maths skills. I am blind.

The only problem with being in this class was that I was surrounded by “atrisk” students. These were kids who did not do well in school and they were constantly in trouble with the school and the law.

One Tuesday morning, I went to a Christian Student Union meeting before school. There was a guest speaker there that day talking to us about praying (祈祷) for our enemies. I began to think about this. As I considered the idea, I prayed and asked God how I could pray for the kids in my class. I had forgotten that they weren't bad kids; they were just lost.

At first, the prayers were mechanical. When I would hear their voices in class, I would pray, “Dear God, please bless soandso...” But as I continued, I began to think of the kids more often, and in my quiet time at home I would ask God to bless (保佑) the rest of my classmates.

As time went on, my classmates became more than just annoying kids to me. There was something growing inside my heart for them, something that wasn't there before. They began to feel like family, and I was learning to love them in a way I never thought possible.

I now see that praying is such a powerful act. Prayer is the most powerful tool a Christian has. When I pray for those around me, it also blesses my life, and it changes my opinion of others. I realized I needed God's blessings to see the world through loving eyes. The prayers I said for others turned out to help me the most.

  1. (1) What's the main idea of the passage?
A . Praying for your enemies. B . The experience of the writer. C . How to get along with the kids. D . How to solve the problem about the “atrisk” students.
  2. (2) What did the writer think about the kids at first?
A . They were lovely and friendly. B . They were always asking for trouble. C . They were as blind as the writer. D . They were less reliable.
  3. (3) What made the writer change his opinion about the kids?
A . The suggestion made by the teacher. B . The experience with the bad kids. C . The change with the time going by. D . The idea about praying learning from a Christian Student Union meeting.
  4. (4) What can we learn from the passage?
A . The kids in the writer's class are bad. B . As time went on, the classmates became annoying. C . After praying, the writer changed his opinion of his classmates immediately. D . By praying for others, the writer learned a lot.

The book I'm reading of talks about afternoon tea in Britain. It is said to have started in the early 1800's. Have tea in the late afternoon provides a bridge between lunch and dinner, that might not be served until 8 o'clock at night. This custom soon becomes another meal of day. Interesting, it had a connection by the British porcelain (瓷器) industry. Tea in China was traditionally drank from cups without handles. When tea got popular in Britain, there was a crying need for good cup with handles to suit British habits. This led to the grow in the porcelain industry.

Tornadoes are nature's most violent storms, which can cause deaths and destroy a neighborhood in seconds. A tornado appears as a funnel-shaped (漏斗状) cloud from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling (飞快移动) winds that can reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be over one mile wide and 50 miles long. Every state is at some risk from this disaster.

Some tornadoes can be seen clearly, while rain or nearby low-hanging clouds obscure others. At many times, tornadoes develop so rapidly that little, if any, advance warning is possible.

Before a tornado hits, the air may become very still. A cloud of debris (散片) can mark the location of a tornado even if a funnel can not be seen. Tornadoes generally occur near the edge of a thunderstorm, when the strong wind may die down. It is not uncommon to see clear, sunlit skies behind a tornado.

The following are facts about tornadoes:

The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 MPH, but may also vary from still to 70 MPH. Debris is picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.

The average tornado moves from southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction. Tornadoes are most often reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.

Tornadoes can happen together with tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land. Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water.

The tornado season in the southern states of America is March through May; in the northern states, it is late spring through early summer. Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., but can occur at any time.

  1. (1) From the passage, where may tornadoes come from?
    A . Hurricanes. B . Great heat. C . Thunderstorms. D . Sandstorms.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word “obscure” probably mean?
    A . Hide. B . Reduce. C . Produce. D . Raise.
  3. (3) When a tornado happens, ________.
A . it often reaches the speed of 70 MPH B . it can only be seen in the late of the day C . it may form on the surface of sea water D . it only moves from southwest to northeast
  4. (4) The passage makes us believe that ________.
A . tornadoes are mostly seen in the southern states of America B . warnings about tornadoes are well developed in many countries C . of all the natural disasters, tornadoes often cause the biggest damage D . tornadoes may strike so quickly that there is often little or no warning
