Today's post is about signs in English. You will see signs on the road while driving or when walking down a street. Now let's take a closer look at the signs in the picture below, so you can fully understand what they mean in case you come across one of them.
Starting with the top row, we have:
Yield sign- This sign indicates(标示) that you need to slow down, but you may not have to come to a full stop.
Crosswalk- This is a sign which indicates that people have the right to cross the street, so cars have to stop when they see a person waiting next to the sign.
Second row:
Do not enter- This sign indicates you are not allowed to enter a road at that point.
Buckle up! -There are often signs on roads in the United States reminding people that wearing seat belts is mandatory(强制的) (seat belt laws differ depending on what state you are in, but all US states have seat belt laws)
Third row:
Be alert(警惕) for bears- This is another sign that is sued to indicate that you should be alert for wildlife in the area.
Playground - This is the sign use to alert drivers that there is a playground nearby, so it is a good idea to slow down and watch for children.
Before she could even talk, Ellie Heath spent hours drawing pictures every day. When she grew older, the 15-year-old girl discovered the joy of sewing(缝纫). She said that she found it calming. She started out to make small things, like jewelry and soft toys. Over times, she began making clothing. Her love of the creative work led her to pen a business. Three Blue bunnies is the name of her company, which makes what she calls "wearable art."
"My definition of wearable art is something that makes you feel unique. It's one of a kind, and often handmade."
All the pieces Ellie created were made of used or donated fabrics. She worked a lot with jean jackets, renewing them with artistic additions. The process stated with finding a piece of material that looked good with the jackets." Then, I find out the design that works on it through trial and error(反复尝试) and the design comes to me," she added.
Ellie sharpened her creative skills at school. Cheryl Crow was one of her teachers early on. Crow called Ellie" a dream student". She said Ellie worked hard and made progress." She is always not only very creative, but also very kind and helpful to the other students."
Ellie has many dreams. She wants to be a teacher and to spread the joy of creativity among children. She also dreams her business will grow and become a model for other young people who have a dream they want to come true.
The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat(威胁): the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.
Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in a t least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountain Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of the rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate change. "80 % to 100 % of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century." Said Liu jiangguo, one of the report's authors.
He added, "This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world."
In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger nature reserves.
"But it is far from being enough and protecting the endangered pandas needs cooperation with the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese," said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.
The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of China's wild panda population. In addition, 375 pandas are living in research centers and zoos in China.
Communication is possibly one of the most important business skills. Good communication makes you more popular. Here are some tips to help you become a better communicator.
Listen. Most of us are terrible listeners. Instead of truly listening to what the person is saying, we interrupt (打断), prepare our reply, or think we already know what the speaker is going to say next. .
Pay attention to body language. Body language can tell you just as much as what a person says, if not more. Is your partner saying she can finish her task on time, but wringing her hands(搓手) while she says it? She might be afraid to tell you it will be hard to meet the deadline.
Not everyone likes to communicate in the same way. Email works for some, but others would rather pick up the phone and talk, text, or even use social media to say something. Respect the person you're trying to communicate with and use the method he/she accepts more easily.
Consider your tone(语气). The problem with email and social media is that it can be difficult to determine the tone. But if it comes out pushy or angry, you could cause a misunderstanding with the one you are talking to. Make sure your language is clear, and if you are angry, take a few minutes to calm down before you type.
A. Try to avoid being too serious.
B. You may mean something as a joke.
C. Consider communication preference.
D. Watch carefully how they act when they talk.
E. See how others reply to your communication.
F. It's impossible to understand what someone needs if we don't pay our full attention to what he is saying.
We have all heard how time is more valuable than money, but is it possible to have too much time?
I 1 back in high school I spent most of my day at school since I also 2 a team sport. By the time I got home, I only had a few hours to do my homework, so I had to do it at once.
When I got into college, things 3. I suddenly found myself out of class before noon time. Because of all this 4 time, there was no need to do my school work immediately. I waited until it later became a 5. Once that happened, I just kept 6 my studying further and further back in my day. Then I got to the point where I have to 7 really late at night to get my work done.
One day I 8 a former classmate of mine of mine who was 9 a lot of money running a sideline(副业). Since his regular job was 10 , I asked him why he just didn't do his sideline full-time. He said without the job, he would 11 have too much time and would just do what I did back in 12 . He said that if he quite the job, he would lose his 13 to work and succeed.
So, try to 14 up your time with other work. That is why there is a 15 that if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it.
My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.
As expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, "Er… What… What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future?"
I was silent for a moment playing with the cellphone. I kept thinking, "Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?" later I replied, "Well, I want to be a writer."
I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But he answered surprisingly, "Interesting idea!" I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation(犹豫).
"Are you serious, Dad?"
"Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it's late. Let's take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs for dinner, and we can talk more. "
Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn't talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.
There were no big waves and bright sunlight at that time. "Let's see if we are lucky," he said, and picked up a cage with a rope tied to it and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, "Give me a hand with this." Then we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck(甲板).
To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape(逃跑). Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.
Paragraph 1:
At that moment, my father pointed to the cage, "Look at that crab, there!" Paragraph 2:
From that day on, I was determined to make my dream come true.
Do you still remember what happened when you went to school on the first day? I still remember my interesting first day of school. On that day, I hurried to my science class in the morning and found a seat in the back. I waited there for 15 minutes before the bell rang. The science teacher told us about some class rules. No one talked to me nor did I talk to anyone else. I was one of those very shy girls. After the science class, I had an English class. I thought it would be boring but it turned out to be very funny. When the classes of the morning ended I went to lunch. I sat outside the dining room with no one to talk to and no food because I was too nervous to join the lunch line. I kept looking around hoping to see someone I knew but I never saw anyone.
Lunch ended and I went to have my art class. I was the first one there and even my teacher was not there yet. So I sat at my desk and started drawing some pictures. I didn't notice the rest of the class walking in or the girl that was standing behind me till I was surprised by the voice, "So what are you drawing?" It was a girl who had really long hair. She ended up being my best friend and one of the kindest and liveliest girls I know.
In the next class meeting, the teacher asked us to talk about the past holiday. I was glad to make some new friends in the class. The first day of high school was hard for me but I got through it.
I began learning playing the violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.
Once, Mrs. Ghent held a concert for her students. I played near the end of it. After I played a while, I forgot the music. No matter how I tried, I couldn't think of it. So I had to stop and looked at the pianist's music. When the whole concert was over, I cried hiding in my overcoat.
Mrs. Ghent came to comfort me. Then she told us about a coming concert, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great, as Mischa Elman was going to perform at Carnegie Hall. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday present.
Carnegie Hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. I don't remember what Elman played. I only remember that his playing was beautiful. I have seen films of him in recent years, and have been struck by his performance, but I don't remember the music he played that night. What I remember most is that Mrs. Ghent whispered to me from time to time that he had forgotten something or played a wrong note, or had made some other kinds of mistakes.
When I teach students to play the violin now, I tell my students who are in dread of making mistakes that if they aren't going to make a mistake, they will never play beautiful music.
Getting to School
Here is information about the different ways of getting your children to school safely.
※
Walking is a great way to get to school—it's healthy, free and doesn't create pollution. It also reduces traffic congestion(交通堵塞) during the school run.
. Once they know their routes and can cross roads safely, they can walk by themselves or with friends.
But younger children need to be accompanied(陪伴) by an adult, especially if there are busy roads. If you can't walk your children to school they might be able to join a "walking bus". . Even if you can walk your children to school, a walking bus enables you to share the responsibility with other parents and frees up a bit of extra time.
If you would like to see a walking bus in your area, talk to other parents and staff at your children's school to see if you could set one up together.
※Cycling to school
Cycling is another great way to get to school. However, young people aged between 11 and 15 are more likely to be killed or injured on the roads than any other groups. .
If your children cycle to school, make sure their bikes are in good working order, and that they wear helmets(头盔) and reflective jackets. Work out the best route with the least traffic.
Find out about cycle training, which should be provided free by your local authority. .
A. Walking to school
B. Ask your children's school for details
C. So they need to be aware of the dangers
D. Your children may be fit for free school transport
E. Walking to school also gives older children independence
F. This is a group of children walking to school with at least two adults
G. If walking or cycling isn't possible, there are several ways of getting to school on roads
I have always been hardworking in school. And I enjoyed gaining new understanding about study. One way was making 1.
Math has always been my favorite subject. During each math class, while 2, I waited for my golden opportunities to show myself, which were 3.When they came, I would 4 my hand. Answering them 5 made me feel I was recognized by my classmates and teacher. The only problem was that I wanted to be perfect-to be right every time.
As it turned out, living up to this standard was 6. In one class, I stood up confidently but gave a 7 answer. Even though I knew this was certainly not my first mistake in life, something 8 had come at that moment. I thought that my classmates might think I was stupid. The beautiful castle that I had built up 9 after my mistake.
In the following classes, I was in low spirits and became 10.Even if I may have known the answer, I was unwilling to take the risk of damaging my selfconfidence any more. Noticing my 11, my math teacher talked with me and learned my problem. She told me that mistakes are an important part of learning 12 they can point out our weaknesses and help us progress. I should set up the principle of 13 mistakes.
From that experience, I realized that even though I thought I was right about most things, I was wrong in my 14. School is not a place to 15 but a place to learn. What I now know is that by holding fast to humility (谦虚) and learning to grow from my mistakes, I can truly learn in a way I could never in the past.
I was walking into my first school in America. On the first day, I went to my second period after I (miss) my first. With anxiety and fear, I reached for the door knob(门把手), opening it slowly. Everyone's eyes (be) on me as I entered the room. Without (pay) attention to them, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered," Yes." His voice comforted me little. I chose the seat close to the door. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image (produce) by the overhead projector(放映机).
Since it was my first day, I was very (confuse) about when I would have lunch. It was noon. I went to my next class and the bell rang I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said," It's still the (four) period."
"But the bell just rang," I said.
She said," That is the lunch bell." I apologized and headed the cafeteria. Every confusion seemed like an obstacle I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus station. I spotted my bus and sat down inside (happy).
Do other countries' students also have so much homework? What do they usually do in their free time? You may feel curious about them.
On April 8, a report came out on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US. It surveyed around 6, 200 students from the four countries last year. You will find the answers to many of your questions in this report.
Who studies hardest?
Chinese students spend the most time studying. Nearly half of Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework every day. That's much more than the students of the US(26. 4%), Japan(8. 2%)and South Korea (5. 2%).
Who sleeps most often in class?
Japanese students fall asleep in class most often. About 45% of them said they soon doze off in class. In South Korea, it's 32%; in the US, 21%; and 5% in China.
South Korean students don't like taking notes. About 70% said they write down what the teacher says in class, many fewer than in Japan (93%), China (90%) and the US (89%).
Who is the most distracted(走神)?
American students are the most active in class, but also the most distracted:64. 2% said they chat with friends in class; 46. 9% said they eat snacks in class; and 38. 9% said they send emails or read unrelated books in class.
What do they do after school?
In their spare time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet. Most American students hang out with their friends. Most Japanese students do physical exercise. Most Korean students watch TV.
Cheating(作弊) can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheating. In their opinion, it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they shouldn't get that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a" good reason" for cheating, cheating isn't a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn't study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school. A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
The Voice of Rigo
Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so that he would not bother others who were studying.
Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled," Hey!" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.
When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head," Rigo! Be quiet!" When his father drove him to school, Rigo said," Hey! There's Chris!" He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head."Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car." At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.
Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.
After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again." Hey!" he yelled." Chris!Hey!"The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.
Paragraph 1:
The headmaster stopped and looked at Rigo.
Paragraph 2:
He said goodbye to the headmaster and ran to get in his father's car cheerfully.
