If I Could Go Back in Time

One of the most popular topics in the history of science fiction has been the idea of time travel.

When I was a child, I often dreamed about a time machine that would allow me to "save" certain moments of my life, so that in case I failed to do something, I could always "load" my life from a checkpoint. As I grew1, my life experiences gradually became more diverse (多样的). In many situations, I had no idea how to act properly, what decisions to make, what path to follow;2, I made mistakes. While many of my actions back then turned out for the good in the future, some mistakes provided many painful moments for me and people around me. Mistakes are certain to happen, but they allow us to learn,3ourselves, and drive us to change for the better - and still sometimes I would like to jump into a time machine, go back a couple of years ago, and make4.

Would I try to make other people act in a different way?' I think no. I would rather5myself about the awaiting consequences (后果) of my most careless decisions. I would talk to a longhaired teen holding his first cigarette and tell him, "Don't do that." So many warnings I would give to myself that sometimes I think: Was it really me who did this and that?

Having a time machine would make life easier. Perhaps, it is true. But what I think more often now is that living without this teaches us responsibility, about oneself, about important people to us, about one's own life. And besides, our6make us what we are today. Today I am a person leading a healthy, active lifestyle; I try to live each day to fullness in order to7nothing.

If I could go back in time, I would try to make my8better. This is what our parents always try to do when we are children. But you know what? I am glad that no time machine has been invented.

What will the future life be like? Many people, magazines and some films have told us that robots will be able to work for us in the future. They already can make cars, play music and do many trivial things.

In the future, robots might be able to make websites for us; they might be able to make houses all by themselves; they might be able to do anything for us. However, I believe that in the future, it will not be the robots working for us, we will work for them.

In the future, people might create a human being that cannot have a will of his own and has to follow orders only from his master. This means you can train him mentally with computers. And you know that an adult who follows the same training over and over again will not be able to change without another training. This means you can have someone work in a factory with no payment. And he will still be happy even if he only gets the basic life-support goods, because it's the way he was trained. I believe that this is the reason why the government does not allow any human research.

  1. (1) Robots already can do the following things for humans EXCEPT___________ according to the passage.
    A . making cars B . playing music C . doing many trivial things D . saving people's life
  2. (2) What can we know from the second paragraph?
A . Robots of the future will do everything for us. B . In the future, robots can do more things than humans. C . Robots of the future will not be respected. D . In the future, humans will be lazier and lazier.
  3. (3) The human being that people might produce in the future may be a (n)____________.
    A . teacher B . server C . engineer D . doctor
  4. (4) The underlined word "master" in Paragraph 3 probably means "_____________".
    A . boss B . parent C . owner D . teacher
  5. (5) Where may the passage be taken from?
    A . A report about jobs. B . A book about culture. C . A magazine about dreams. D . A website about the future life.

We all dream about life in the future. What do you think it will be like?

Predicting the future is very difficult. Who could imagine, in the 1970s, for example, that by the end of the 20th century, computers would be as common in people's homes as TV sets?

Robots seem very new to most people. You may see them in some films. In the future, they usually help people do dangerous, difficult or boring jobs. We don't have to do things like washing the dishes or making the beds.

The Earth will also be an easy place to live. There will be fewer cars, less pollution and more trees in the future. We will have more free time. Everything will be free. We will be able to do shopping without money. Doctors will be able to keep us alive for a long time. There will be more e-schools. Children will study at home on the Internet. They won't go to school every day.

In the future, will people fly into space and spend their holiday on the Moon? Or will we live under the sea? Who can say all the things won't come true? I think anything is possible.

  1. (1) When did computers appear in people's homes as commonly as TV sets?
  2. (2) What can robots do for humans?
  3. (3) Will the Earth be a good place to live in the future in the writer's opinion?
  4. (4) Where will children study in the future?
  5. (5) Does the writer think it possible that people will spend their holiday on the Moon or live under the sea in the future? Why or why not?

Have you ever thought about what our food will be in the future?

More land will be used for building new towns and houses for all the people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. Instead, people will eat more fruit and vegetables. In this way, people may be healthier.

Only about 29%of the Earth's area is land and the rest is sea, so some think maybe we can get more food from the sea.

Besides, though rice supports more than half the world's population, it needs a lot of water to grow. Therefore, it might be impossible to grow rice in the future. Some farmers are experimenting with new crops. The soybean (黄豆) makes a good substitute (替代品) for rice and meat.

A. Maybe no one will eat it every day.

B. Scientists predict (预测) the climate will get drier during the next century.

C. Scientists are always trying out new ways of growing food.

D. Farmers like to grow beans because they don't need much water, and beans also improve the quality of the soil.

The World Tourism Organization says that space will soon become a popular place to go on holiday- possibly by 2020. One Japanese company is planning a space holiday center. It will look like a bicycle wheel and have a very modern hotel for 100 people and a park. It will travel around the earth at a height of 300km. The company hopes the center will be ready soon. The company manager says he thinks that flying to the center will probably be quicker than flying from Hong Kong to Singapore. After they arrive at the center tourists can take trips to the moon or go for walks in space. What about the cost? Well, the company believes that people will be happy to pay about $ 100,000 for a trip. But they think that as more people want to go, the trip will become much cheaper.

An American company is also thinking of building a very modern hotel, called the Lunar Hotel, on the moon. Most of the hotel will be under the ground, so it won't become too hot or too cold. The rooms will look just like they do on the earth. The guests will eat normal food for lunch. The cooks will just push a button (按钮) to mix dried food with water to make a meal!

There will be little or no dirt and there won't be much water. So the hotel won't wash the towels or sheets(床单) they will be thrown away.
