If I Could Go Back in Time

    One of the most popular topics in the history of science fiction has been the idea of time travel.

    When I was a child, I often dreamed about a time machine that would allow me to "save" certain moments of my life, so that in case I failed to do something, I could always "load" my life from a checkpoint.     If I could go back in time, I would try to make my8better. This is what our parents always try to do when we are children. But you know what? I am glad that no time machine has been invented.

    What will the future life be like? Many people, magazines and some films have told us that robots will be able to work for us in the future. They already can make cars, play music and do many trivial things.

    In the future, robots might be able to make websites for us; they might be able to make houses all by themselves; they might be able to do anything for us. However, I believe that in the future, it will not be the robots working for us, we will work for them.

    In the future, people might create a human being that cannot have a will of his own and has to follow orders only from his master. This means you can train him mentally with computers. And you know that an adult who follows the same training over and over again will not be able to change without another training. This means you can have someone work in a factory with no payment. And he will still be happy even if he only gets the basic life-support goods, because it's the way he was trained. I believe that this is the reason why the government does not allow any human research.

    We all dream about life in the future. What do you think it will be like?

    Predicting the future is very difficult. Who could imagine, in the 1970s, for example, that by the end of the 20th century, computers would be as common in people's homes as TV sets?

    More land will be used for building new towns and houses for all the people. Then there will be less room for cows and sheep, so meat will be more expensive. Instead, people will eat more fruit and vegetables. In this way, people may be healthier.

    Only about 29%of the Earth's area is land and the rest is sea, so some think maybe we can get more food from the sea.

    Besides, though rice supports more than half the world's population, it needs a lot of water to grow. Therefore, it might be impossible to grow rice in the future. Some farmers are experimenting with new crops. The soybean (黄豆) makes a good substitute (替代品) for rice and meat.

    Robots will play different roles at different places in the future.

    When people are on vacation, they will be able to visit each other without traveling. They will do this by controlling (控制) a robot at the vacation place，and use the Internet to send all the information. Families in different countries will play games together with robots. And people will think nothing of having conversations with telephones. They will use robots, the telephones without any cables(电缆).

    The places we live in will take care of themselves. Robots will clean the house. There will be no washing housework, and our dinner will be ready before we want to eat. Robots will not replace us, but they will give us more time to do the things we like. Robots will help us to live more easily and more comfortably. They will make personal fast food and give us healthy meals.

    A new report shows what life might be like in 100 years from now. It describes skyscrapers that are much taller than today's buildings, underwater 'bubble' cities and holidays in space. Th3e report is from a company. It asked experts(专家) on space and architecture, as well as city planners, to give their ideas on the life in 2116. They said the way we live, work and play will be totally different to how we do these things today. The experts used the Internet as an example. They said that 25 years ago, people could not imagine how the Internet and smart phones would change our lives. The Internet has completely changed the way we communicate, learn and do daily things. The experts said the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.

    Researchers questioned 2,000 adults about the prediction(预言) they thought were most likely(很可能的) to happen in the future. They predicted that in the future, few people will go to an office but will work from home and have work meetings online. People will have highly developed 3-D printers that will let you download(下载) a design for furniture or a food recipe and then 'print' the sofa, table or pizza at home. There will also be less need for visits to the doctor. We will all have a home health instrument that will tell us what the problem is and give us treatment. We will also be going into space for holidays and to get resources that we have used up on Earth. A prediction that is missing is whether people will need to study English.

The World Tourism Organization says that space will soon become a popular place to go on holiday- possibly by 2020. One Japanese company is planning a space holiday center. It will look like a bicycle wheel and have a very modern hotel for 100 people and a park. It will travel around the earth at a height of 300km. The company hopes the center will be ready soon. The company manager says he thinks that flying to the center will probably be quicker than flying from Hong Kong to Singapore. After they arrive at the center tourists can take trips to the moon or go for walks in space. What about the cost? Well, the company believes that people will be happy to pay about $ 100,000 for a trip. But they think that as more people want to go, the trip will become much cheaper.

An American company is also thinking of building a very modern hotel, called the Lunar Hotel, on the moon. Most of the hotel will be under the ground, so it won't become too hot or too cold. The rooms will look just like they do on the earth. The guests will eat normal food for lunch. The cooks will just push a button (按钮) to mix dried food with water to make a meal!

There will be little or no dirt and there won't be much water. So the hotel won't wash the towels or sheets(床单) they will be thrown away.

    Second, water will be a big problem in 2050. In many places, people won't have water to drink.

    Third, cars will use new and clean fuels (燃料) and they will go very fast. There will be a computer in every car. And the computers will control the cars and there won't be any accidents (事故).

Cars will run on solar power or electricity and will be much cleaner.  For example, if you are too close to another car or if you are driving dangerously, your car will slow down by itself.

Since there won't be any spare place, new cities will have to be built in the sea.

Many new ways to treat illnesses will be successful using products of genetic engineering (基因工程）. Treatments will be found for the flu (流感）and the common cold.

The Orbital Assembly Corporation plans to build Voyager Station, a space hotel that includes rooms for tourists, in 2026, and open it in 2027. It will be able to carry up to 400 people.

The space hotel will be shaped like a large wheel, with 24 space pods(舱) around the outside of the 200-meter-wide structure. Each pod is 24 meters long and 12 meters wide. The pods will be used for restaurants, bars, gyms, rooms for tourists, laboratories for research and so on.

The company says that some pods will even be private homes that people can buy.

"Eventually, going to space will just be another option(选择) people will choose for their vacation, just like going on a cruise(航行), or going to Disney World ," said Tim Alatorre, senior architect(建筑师) of the space hotel. He said that the space hotel may even include a concert hall and a movie theater.
