Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a "smart" city like this could happen sooner than you think.

Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a "telepresence" system (远程监控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.

The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.

About 75% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. "Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener," said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

  5. (5) Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
    A . Future education B . Smart cities C . Government services D . Famous companies

Would you like to travel space?

It is 2050. Space tourism has become a reality. So would you want to be a space tourist? Here, some middle school students share their opinions.

    Jeea, U.K.

I love space very much and would like to be the first teenager to da new planet. Then perhaps it would be named after me. I would become famous around the world!

    Emily, U.S.

Space exploration can be dangerous. What should I do if I get l?I can't come back to the earth. I am also afraid of heights. It would be very frightening when you look down from a spaceship!

    Klaudia, Spain

I would love to go to space because from there I could enjoy a nice v of the Earth. The blue oceans and green forests on the Earth must be magnificent. What's more,I am curious about what life is like without gravity (重力). Perhaps it would be fun to play golf in space!

    Edward, U.K.

It would be cool. But how lonely and depressed I would be without aaround me! I would miss my family. It also requires a large amount of training to become a space tourist, and I don't think I have time for that. Moreover, I don't think I can aa trip to space. That would definitely cost a lot!

    Zainab, South Africa

I'd love to. We studied the solar system in Science classes this semester. I think space is amazing and I desire to know more about it. Unluckily, I have no other way but to search for information about it o. If I can have the chance to travel to space, I would directly see the things I never see on the Earth.

    Ana, U.S.

I would not like to be a space tourist. I respect those who love space tourism. For me, I only want to f on what I have on this planet - my family, my school and my pets. I would like to work hard to make progress in what I am doing.

It's hard to turn down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don't have to wash them before eating them. However British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.

One reason for this is climate change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data from 27 countries and regions that produce 86 percent of the worlds bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. In the past 60 years, the average yield has reached 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare.

However, if temperatures keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world's biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may die out.

Shouldn't bananas grow more easily if it's hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature for growing bananas is between 24℃ and 32℃. If temperatures get too high, they will stop growing.

Diseases are another danger to bananas. Unlike other crops, the bananas we grow come from shoot cuttings rather than seeds. This means that all banana plants have the same genotype. In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.

One serious disease is called Panama. It spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the middle east, and australia. If one banana plantation suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow bananas again. Scientists have yet to find a cure for this disease.

  1. (1) The best temperature for growing bananas is_____.
    A . 15℃. B . 20℃. C . 27℃. D . 35℃.
  2. (2) From the text, we can learn that__________.

  3. (3) How many reasons for the disappearing of bananas are mentioned in the text?
    A . One B . Two C . Three D . Four
  4. (4) Which of the following statements is TRUE?

Mars is an empty planet, but that could change. Someday, it might have farms where fruit and vegetables could grow.

Growing food on Mars has always seemed hard. But scientists think they have found a way to do it. They put sheets(薄膜) of material on the ground. The sheets could change the cold, dry planet into land for farming.

Robin Wordsworth worked on the sheets at Harvard University in Massachusetts. He said the sheets could let people live on another planet. On Mars, the conditions are not good, though. Most importantly, the planet is cold and dry. The soil might have polluted parts, and the air does not have much nitrogen(氮气) that plants need to grow.

The sheets do not solve all the problems. Still, they could help to set up a place for plants. The plants would grow only under the sheets. So there is less worry about harming the rest of Mars. The sheets would cover the plants.

The scientists worked with sheets about an inch thick. Those allowed light through for plants. They also warmed the ground and trapped enough heat to melt ice on Mars. Placing the sheets over icy parts of Mars could let plants alive there. Their study was printed in Nature Astronomy. The sheets could be on the ground to grow water plants and they also could be hung. That would give room to plants to grow on land below them.

Wordsworth said, "You can imagine this being used in a number of ways. It could be used for visitors to Mars. Later it could be for people who live there. However, it's a pity that the sheets are being studied in the lab."

  1. (1) The scientists made sheets _______________________.
A . to change the weather of Mars B . to grow food on Mars C . to get materials on the ground D . to let people live on Mars
  2. (2) The underlined word "that" refers to _______________________.
A . Making sheets an inch thick B . Placing the sheets over icy parts C . Growing many plants on the ground D . Hanging the sheets above the land
  3. (3) From Wordsworth's words in the last paragraph, the sheets _______________________.
A . will be sent to Mars soon B . are still on the way C . can grow foods for him to eat D . are popular for visitors to Mars
  4. (4) What would be the best title for the passage?
A . Plants can live on Mars now. B . How do astronauts live on Mars? C . Farming on Mars is coming true. D . Ways of growing plants on the earth.

It's March, 2050.

Frank and Mary Smith wake up in their comfortable house in the morning and turn on the bedroom computer to get the news. They used to read the Times, but changed to electronic newspapers many years ago.

There is the usual news about space: another space flight has returned from Mars and scientists have discovered a new planet. As they watch the screen, Mary orders(命令) one of the household robots to make coffee for them.

Frank disappears into the study to join a video conference(会议) with his partners around the world. He is a computer engineer and this is his third job: he used to be in marketing and then television.

Mary has a quick look at the shopping programs before picking up the video phone to talk to her assistant(助手). She also has a job and she is doing medical research. Both she and Frank used to have an office desk in London, but in 2014 they decided to move to the seaside and work from home.

Frank and Mary have one daughter, Louise, who also has her own workstation at home. She goes to school only one day a week, mainly to play with other students. Classrooms disappeared in 2030 because there was no longer any need for them: communication systems(系统) have made it much easier to learn at home.

Louise, now thirteen, is studying Chinese at present, which has become a world language as important as English. Louise has many Chinese friends. They communicate on the Internet.

According to the family doctor, Louise will live to be at least 130 years old. Her wish is to work for a few decades (十年) and then spend her time on music and painting.

  1. (1) Why do Frank and Mary turn on the bedroom computer in the morning?
  2. (2) What does Mary order the household robot to do?
  3. (3) Where do Frank and Mary use to work before 2014?

Facebook says it is working on technology to allow us to control computers directly with our brains. It is developing "silent speech" software to allow people to type at a rate of 100 words per minute, it says. The project, in its early stages, will require new technology to detect brainwaves without needing invasive operation. "We are not talking about monitoring your random thoughts," assured Facebook's Regina Dugan. "You have many thoughts, and you choose to share some of them. We're talking about monitoring those words. A silent speech interface(界面) — one with all the speed and flexibility(灵活) of voice. "

Ms Dugan is the company's head of Building 8, the firm's hardware research lab. The company said it intends to build both the hardware and software to achieve its goal, and has employed a team of more than 60 scientists and academics to work on the project.

On his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg added, "Our brains produce enough data to stream four HD(高清) movies every second. The problem is that the best way we have to get information out into the world-speech can only send about the same amount of data as a 1980s modem. We're working on a system that will let you type straight from your brain about five times faster than you can type on your phone today. Finally, we want to turn it into a wearable technology that can be produced in quantity. "

Technology is going to have to get a lot more advanced before we can share a pure thought or feeling, but this is a first step. Other ideas detailed at the company's developers conference in San Jose included work to allow people to "hear" through skin. The system, comparable to Braille, uses pressure points on the skin to pass information. "One day, not so far away, it may be possible for me to think in Chinese, and you to feel it instantly in Spanish," Ms Dugan said.

  1. (1) What can we know about the "silent speech"?
A . It benefits blind people a lot. B . It monitors our random thoughts. C . It controls computers directly. D . It allows people to type fast.
  2. (2) What Zuckerberg said shows that ________.
A . this wearable technology has already been put into use B . typing directly from brains might become a reality some day C . the best way to send information out is to use a 1980s modem D . speaking speed is slower than that of our brains producing data
  3. (3) What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A . Chinese will become a language of computer. B . Facebook has a long way to go to achieve its goal. C . It is impossible to control computers with brains. D . Computers can be monitored by people's skin now.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A . Facebook shares brain-control ambitions B . Computers bring profits to Facebook C . Silent speech changes people's lifestyle D . New technology detects brainwaves

On Dec. 25, 2021, a new age of space science started when NASA set up the James Webb Space Telescope (望远镜). It will change our understanding of space.

According to NASA, Webb is the world's largest and most powerful telescope. The old Hubble Space Telescope mostly sees what we see- visible light, But Webb sees infrared (红外线的) light, which is invisible to the human eye. It can make new discoveries by examining stars inside those dust clouds. It will be able to "look at" the first light after the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) which created our universe, as well as how young stars grow.

Webb "sees" by using mirrors to collect infrared light from the universe. The bigger the mirror is, the more details it can see. The telescope is as tall as a three-story building and as big as a tennis court. It is so big that it has to fold its mirrors to fit inside the rocket. Once in orbit (轨道), they will unfold, creating one large mirror.

The telescope flew 29 days to reach its orbit, which is more than one million kilometers away from the earth. After six months, it sent back its first picture.

The building of the telescope started in 2004. About 40 million hours of work, thousands of scientists from 14 countries, 10 billion dollars and 1 heavy-lift rocket made it all possible.

Now it's ready to help us answer key questions, such as where we came from and whether we're alone in the universe,
