In 1901, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist, found that there are four types of blood. These four blood types were named A, B, AB and O. People have one of these four types. Blood type O is the most common around the world. Blood type A is the second most common, and type AB is the least common. If people with type A blood are given type B blood, or people with type B blood are given type A blood, they will probably die.

In 1927, a Japanese doctor, Furukawa Takeji, carried out research and came up with the idea that people with different blood types also had different personalities. He said that people with type A blood are usually calm and serious; people with type B blood are curious, cheerful, and outgoing; people with type O blood are generous(慷慨的)and honest; while those with type AB blood are often caring, creative and careful.

More recently, a doctor in the United States wrote a book that links(联系)blood types and what people eat. For example, his book suggests people with type O blood should eat more meat and less bread. A diet for people with type A blood includes more vegetables. His book, Eat Right for Your Type, has been a hit with people who want to lose weight(减肥). However, Dr. Peter D' Adamo believes that eating food that matches a person's blood type can do more than help them lose weight. He thinks it will make the person healthier in other ways, too.

What's a spacewalk? Any time an astronaut gets out of a spacecraft(航天器) while in space, it is called a spacewalk. Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. For example, experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects(影响) different things. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can also fix things instead of bringing them back to the earth to fix.

When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen(氧气) they need to breathe and the water they need to drink. To keep the astronauts and the spacecraft safe, the astronauts must leave and go back to the spacecraft through a special door. When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft. Tethers are like ropes, connect the spacewalkers with the spacecraft. They keep astronauts from floating(漂 浮) away into space. Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFER is worn like a backpack. It helps an astronaut move around in space.

How do astronauts train for spacewalks? One way is by going for a swim. Floating in space is a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in a huge special swimming pool. For every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk, astronauts need to train seven hours in the pool. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalk is by using virtual reality(虚拟现实). It looks and feels just like a spacewalk.

Today, only three countries have finished spacewalks independently. They are Russia, the United States and China. The first person to go on a spacewalk in the world was Alexei Leonov from Russia. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese astronaut to go on a spacewalk. The world record of spacewalks is held by Russian astronaut Anatoly Solovyev. He has been on 16 spacewalks and spent more than 82 hours outside in space.

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.

People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry (= unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted.

People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eve views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

  1. (1) We should take good care of our eyes _______________.
A . only when we can see well B . only when we cannot see perfectly C . even if we can see well D . only when we realize how important our eyes are
  2. (2) When things far away seem indistinct, one is probably _______________.

The Chang'e 5 robotic probe (探测器) has become China's first spaceship to bring the country's national flag to the Moon.

The scene of the Five Starred Red Flag against the dark sky on the grey lunar surface was taken by a camera on the Chang'e 5 robotic probe's lander and then sent to the ground control. In Chang'e 3 and 4 tasks, the national flag was painted on the spaceship. Therefore, the flag carried by Chang'e 5 is the first Chinese national flag that has been planted on the Moon.

The system to raise the flag was designed and produced by engineers at China Space Sanjiang Group in Hubei Province. It has three parts.

Because of the strong radiation (辐射) and the terrible temperatures on the Moon, we couldn't use traditional fabrics (面料). If we place an ordinary flag on the Moon, its colors will quickly become lighter. Designers spent more than one year choosing and testing ideal materials, and finally picked a new kind of material that can resist the very difficult conditions on the Moon.

  1. (1) The Chang'e 5 brought the flag outside the space.
  2. (2) The scene of the national flag was taken by a smartphone.

Being able to multitask—doing several things at the same time—is considered (考虑,认为) a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.

What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic devices (电子产品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts (努力) as they multitask.

Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.

Multitasking also has an effect (影响) on young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of modern gadgets ( 器 具 ) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive (肯定的) response (回应). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主 ) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary (没必要) for them to learn special skills to do their work.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word “juggle” most probably mean?
A . Want to buy. B . Use at the same time. C . Take the place of. D . Search information from.
  2. (2) In Paragraph 3, the author points out that_________.
A . family members do not greet each other B . family members do not eat at the family table C . young people get on well with their families D . young people hardly communicate with their family members
  3. (3) What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
A . Young people must learn skills for future jobs. B . Young people benefit (获益) a lot from modern gadgets. C . Multitasking is an important skill to young people. D . Multitasking influences young people's development seriously.
  4. (4) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . Young people think multitasking is good for their study and work. B . Employers consider it unnecessary for young people to be taught all over again. C . Educators feel that young people don't need to improve their study skills. D . People from the world of education believe multitasking has a good effect on children's later study skills.
  5. (5) The author develops (阐述) the passage mainly by_________.
A . providing special examples B . following the natural time order C . giving out a cause and analyzing (分析) its effects D . comparing opinions from different world

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline (汽油), but that may change in the future: cars can also run on other liquid fuels (液体燃料)and electricity.

Gasoline is from oil. The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons  (碳氢化合物). Gasoline provides great power for cars. However, it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise. So gasoline can't be the best fuel.

Another choice is electricity. Electricity cars can be as efficient (效能好的)as cars using gasoline, And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive. Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.

The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.

One way to make such fuels is to get CO2 from the air and put it in water. Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.

Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use. But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.

For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it. Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline. Governments and car producers are doing everything they can to cut down the costs. In the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

  1. (1) Gasoline provides cars with ______.
    A . great power B . fresh air C . clean water D . enough space
  2. (2) According to Paragraph3, we can infer that electric cars _____.
A . produce less pollution B . will become more and more expensive C . will become more popular D . are more efficient than those using gasoline
  3. (3) What would be the best title for the passage?
A . How Do We Protect Our Planet? B . What Are the Fuels' Differences? C . What Is the Best Fuel for Cars? D . How Do We Make Fuels for Cars?

As is known to all, without the earth's gravity (引力),nothing will come down to the earth and everything and everyone will fly in the sky. That is why many astronauts landing on the moon must work out the problems because of the low gravity.

Thanks to the international space station, we know quite a lot about the influences of low gravity on the human body, but NASA scientists want to learn more. So, they have been studying how other living things deal with low gravity, mainly focusing on mice. The results are both interesting and humorous. The scientists first sent some mice that were in the special cage to the international space station. The cage allowed them to study the behavior of the mice far away from the earth by video.

As you will notice in the video, the mice seem uncomfortable at the beginning of the experiment. They move around clumsily(笨拙地), drift in the small cage and do their best to figure out which side was up, but without success. However, it's not long before the mice seem to stop fighting. They became used to their new environment very well, and even put the lack (缺失)of gravity to good use and they push themselves around the cage. Soon they can move everywhere freely. The 11th day of the experiment shows the mice are not just dealing with the gravity change, but actually seem to be enjoying it. Several of the mice are seen running around the cage walls. The scientists wanted to see whether the mice would continue doing the same kinds of activities they were seen doing on earth.

The study showed that the mice kept as normal activities as they did on the earth, including cleaning themselves and eating when hungry.

  1. (1) We know __________________ at the beginning of the experiment.
A . the mice felt comfortable in the new environment. B . the mice were not used to the low-gravity environment. C . the mice went out of their way to run out of the cage.

    A . 漂移 B . 倒立 C . 躺下
  3. (3) What did the scientists find about the mice from the experiment at last?
A . They could only ate when hungry rather than clean themselves. B . They could hardly live in the new environment. C . They behaved as well as they were on Earth.
  4. (4) Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A . The scientists first sent a mouse to the international space station. B . The mice remained in the international space station for eleven days. C . The mice seemed to enjoy themselves after getting used to the new environment.
  5. (5) Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A . How animals deal with lack of gravity. B . Whether the earth has gravity or not. C . How mice get used to the new environment.

Without energy in our bodies, we wouldn't be able to do anything. We couldn't walk, talk, or even play. Energy is usable power. And energy is related to some kind of motion.

All living things need energy, no matter what they do. Plants get their energy from sunlight. This energy is stored indifferent chemicals(化合物)inside the plant.

Animals that eat plants take the energy stored in the plants. The energy is then stored in chemicals inside the animals as "food energy". The same happens when animals eat other animals.

Plants and animals use energy every day as they grow and do the work of being a plant or an animal. So plants have to keep absorbing(吸收)sunlight, and animals have to keep eating plants or other animals.

It isn't only living things that have energy. A dead tree has hidden energy. When we burn its wood, it gives off warmth, or "heat energy". The Sun too makes heat energy as it keeps burning.

The Sun gives off not just heat but also light, as "light energy". A battery in a flashlight makes it shine, generating light energy. But if we put the same battery in a radio, we get music. A battery's energy is known as "electrical energy". And in a toy car that electrical energy produces movement.

If we couldn't use heat, light, or electrical energy, we couldn't drive cars or cook food. We wouldn't have light at night time.

  1. (1) What's the Chinese meaning of the underlined word "motion"?
    A . 运动 B . 动机 C . 动议 D . 动向
  2. (2) How do animals get their energy?
A . By absorbing sunlight. B . By eating plants or other animals. C . By keeping burning. D . By putting batteries on them.
  3. (3) How is heat energy made according to the fifth paragraph?
A . By burning something. B . By keeping running. C . By eating something. D . By hiding something.

For at least 3,000 years, there have been many Chinese stories and poems about giant pandas. It's said that emperors kept these bears as a sign of wealth. A giant panda's skull(头盖骨)was found in the tomb of a wife of an emperor who lived over 2,000 years ago. Skins and bones of pandas have been discovered in older tombs as well. Today pandas are China's national symbol of peace and friendship.

All the forests of southern and eastern China were once the home of pandas. Now they live in the south-central mountains of Sichuan, Shanxi, and Gansu Provinces. The Chinese government has set up nature reserves in these mountains to protect pandas and other species of plants and animals.

Giant pandas have been known to spend up to 16 hours a day eating. They eat 30 to 40 pounds of food in one day! The reason why pandas eat so much is that bamboo doesn't have many nutrients (营养物). Bamboo is also hard to digest (消化) and pass through their bodies very quickly.

Pandas in the wild might live for 20 years. Pandas live longer in zoos. Hsing Hsing, a panda lived in an American zoo, died at the age of 28. In China, pandas in zoos have lived to be even longer.

You'll need to create a password to do just about everything on the Web, such as checking your email, banking online, logging in WeChat and so on. And while it's simpler to use a short, easy-to-remember password, this can also cause serious risks to your online safety. To protect yourself and your information, you'll want to use passwords that are long, strong, and difficult for someone else to guess while still keeping them easy for you to remember.

A strong password is one that's easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Let's take a look at some of the most important things to think when setting a password. First, never use personal information such as your name, birthday, user's name, or email address. This type of information is often publicly available (可获得的), which makes it easier for someone to guess your password. Second, use a longer password. Your passwords should be at least six characters long or even longer. Then, don't use the same password for each account (账户). If someone discovers your password for one account, all of your other accounts will be in danger.

You can try to use numbers, symbols, and both capital and small letters. You have to avoid using words that can be found in the dictionary. Like "swimming", it would be a weak password. So random (随机的) passwords are the strongest.

Instead of writing your passwords on paper like books or notebooks where someone might find them, you can use a password manager (a kind of App) to store them safely online. Password managers can remember and enter your password on different websites. That means you won't have to remember longer passwords. So it is a good and safe way to keep your passwords.

  1. (1) The underlined word "this" refers to         .
    A . checking your email B . banking online C . using a short password D . sharing information
  2. (2) According to the passage, "         " is the strongest password.
    A . 20080618 B . Sywi2008! C . Swimming D . Betty!
  3. (3) The last paragraph is mainly about          .
A . when to store your passwords B . how to set safe passwords C . when to remember passwords D . how to keep passwords safely
  4. (4) The purpose of this passage is mainly to         .
A . encourage people to check emails and banking online B . help people with setting and storing safe passwords C . stop people from using their personal information online D . tell people the differences between easy and difficult passwords

Animals do many different, amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them migrate. They travel to other places where the weather is warmer or where they can find food.

Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip can be dangerous, some travel in large groups. For example, geese(鹅) fly in noisy, "V-shaped groups. Other kinds of birds fly alone.

Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as the weather changes. Many change their doing or their bodies. For example, snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow.

Food is hard to find in winter. Some animals, like mice, collect lots of food in autumn and store it to eat later. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change.

Some animals hibernate(冬眠) for part or all of the winter. This is a special, very deep sleep. The animal's body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy. In autumn, these animals get ready for winter by eating much more food than in summer and storing it as body fat. They use this fat to keep them alive while hibernating.

Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold, they move to the bottom of lakes and rivers. There, frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin.

Every type of insect( 昆虫) has its own life cycle and that is the way it grows and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Some insects also spend the winter without moving. Some insects spend the winter as pupae(蛹). Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.

CNN-China launched (发射) another manned mission (载人任务) to its new space station on Sunday, sending three astronauts (宇航员) who will continue space work for six months.

The astronauts lifted off on the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft at 10:44 a. m. , June 5th, 2022, launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert, Inner Mongolia.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental deaths of children, so a lot of parents are already signing them up for summer swim lessons.

Studies show they help save lives. According to USA Swimming, formal lessons reduce the possibility of drowning by nearly 90%.

Afton Kidman knows the dangers that come from water. "We shouldn't only want our kids to think water is fun," Kidman said. "They also need to know how to survive(存活)in it."

Kidman's son, Forrest, was in a drowning accident. He survived but suffered brain damage, and it's why Kidman decided to learn how to teach survival swimming and became a teacher at Children Swimming Center.

"I wanted to be able to help more kids," Kidman said. She's taught nearly 50 of them so far. Some babies are as young as six months. This summer, she has 30 more children coming for lessons. "Every parent should have your child learn how to swim," Kidman said, "it's a great gift to give them."

"Across the country, more than a million kids will learn to swim this summer," Ruth Comer, with YMCA of Greater Des Moines, said. "Kids who are disabled or have special needs, anyone can learn to swim. It's never too late."

"I think it's going to get a lot of kids that never would have had a chance to get swim lessons, that chance to get in a pool," Ethan Johnson, head coach of the Des Moines Swimming Federation, said. "If we save one life, it's all worth it."
